December 1980. The Oak Ridge Boys played to a packed LSU Assembly Center. Joe Bonsall was their frontman, their ringleader. "Elvira" had been a massive hit the previous summer. They ended the main portion of their show with it. Richard Sterban's bass shook the building! The crowd was on their feet when the Boys left the stage. The group returned and kicked off their encore with a song they had just recorded......."Bobbie Sue". Jay and Amber, thanks for bringing back that memory. And RIP, Joe Bonsall.....you will be missed!

Love the Oak Ridge Boys. I have listened to their music all my life and I first saw them back in 2008 or so and just recently in 2022. Check out “Dream On.” That’s a good one from them. And “Come on in You did the best that you could do.” You should also check out “Thank God for Kids” and “Ya’ll Come Back Saloon.”

Back in 1981, my mother and I saw The Oak Ridge Boys at a local music hall when they were debuting Elvira. We were sitting in the front row with stairs to the stage to the right. At one point after one of their songs, Joe Bonsall came down and shook my mother's hand.

If you want to learn more of who Joe was, catch some of their live performances this evening. Joe was always very funny on stage, between songs. He made seeing The Oaks, a little bit better experience with his great personality. A lot of wet eyes in the country music family, today.

Just about every year, the Oak Ridge Boys would play the Opera House in Galveston, Texas, about an hour away from my home in Houston. I would often buy my mom and me tickets to see them and treat my mom, who loved the band, to a weekend at the beach and then the concert. They always gave a great show, and as it is a rather small concert hall, it often felt like a personal concert. Lots of chatting amongst the band members, telling funny stories, and their great music. Mom passed in 2014, and I miss her every day. I hope she welcomed Joe to Heaven. He couldn't have been met with a bigger fan. Thank you for listening to this one.

No way. This makes me so sad. My daughter loved Elvira when she was about 4 and we put her on RU-vid mumbling her way through the verses and nailing the chorus. Rest in peace Joe. And ALS too! I’ve lost a grandparent and a good friend to it already. This one hurts a lot.

Joe was SUCH a genuinely nice guy. I talked to him on Twitter several times over the years. It stunned me to hear of his death, cos I had no idea he was sick. ALS is such a cruel way to die. My second cousin, Doug, died from it in 2008.

When I was a kid, I took clogging classes, and 1 year, this was the song we did our recital to. And I remember one year there was an open-air concert at a local park that had a ton of musical acts all performing, including The Oak Ridge Boys. My sister and I went with our dad to see them perform live.

Rest in Peace Joe Bonsall🙏🙏 Saw The Oaks live twice, once early, once late in their 50 plus years. The original group formed during World War 2 as a Southern Gospel group. The four guys in this latest version came in starting in the mid 1960s, with Joe Bonsall the last to arrive in 1973. Loved his energy and voice. The group transitioned to Country with these guys, but still maintained their Gospel roots. They sang “Amazing Grace” at President George H W Bush’s funeral. Check out their studio version of that song. Also check out “Settin’ Fancy Free”.

I worked security at a theater in the 80s, and the Oak Ridge Boys performed there 3 - 4 times a year. Their Christmas shows were fantastic. Whenever I got posted at a door near the edge of the stage, the bass singer's voice would make my rib cage rattle. It was a weird feeling, probably cost me a bit of my hearing.

Thank you for reacting to them again, and for honoring Joe Bonsall. The Oak Ridge Boys were such an important part of my childhood with my parents listening to them all the time, but bigger than that - ORB were my first big "real" concert, as in an arena show. It was 1979, I was 11 years old, and Emmylou Harris opened for them. I just looked it up, and evidently tickets cost $8, to see these absolute legends. Another huge country quartet, you've only reacted to once and you gotta delve into them more - The Statler Brothers. "Flowers On the Wall" is a classic that you've got to hear!

I was lucky in that my dad wouldn't go to concerts, so my mom dragged me along to all of the biggest country and Motown acts at summerfest and the Wisconsin State and Illinois State fairs, the Oakridge boys were always a fun concert!!!

Rest in peace, Joe. "It never hurts to hurt sometimes" would be an ultimate tribute to play for Joe. Other songs are "Love Song", "American Made", "Little Things", " Dancing the Night Away", "Dream On", "Come on in" ( Both of them), "Thank God for Kids", and so much more. But for Amber, "Make a Friend" and "Everyday" carries the message yall give everyday.

For the Oak Ridge Boys, you really should react to a live performance--but an old one, from when the song first came out, not one from 10, 20, or 30 years later. The stage performance was a huge part of the experience and the appeal.

I saw them in concert back in 86 and they put on a great show love it they did 2 shows that night and I was at the 2nd show and was standing in the parking lot waiting to get it and they did Elvira and when Richard hit the last mow mow you could hear it echo

Recommendation -- check out a group that inspired this sound, the Coasters, a 1950s-1960s R&B vocal group. "Yakety-Yak," "Western Movies," "Charlie Brown," "TV Fanatic," "It Ain't Sanitary," "Poison Ivy," "Along Came Jones," and my personal favorite, "T'Ain't Nothin' ta Me."

Never knew any of the names of the singers. I was fortunate enough to meet the quartet in 2005. My hometown, Chesaning MI, used to have a long running summer festival, the Showboat Festival, the second week of July. The Oak Ridge Boys performance in 2005 was the final one. Overall the group performed during the festival in 3 different years. This song was about the only other one by this group that I remember. I was not a real big country music listener during 80s. When Elvira exploded that kind of ended it for me. Still - it was cool meeting them in 2005. Very nice outgoing guys who, you could tell, had a genuine love for their fans.😊

RIP Joe. Grew up with my dad listening to this band and while I was not a country genre fan as a kid I did like the Oak Ridge Boys.

Seen them in concert years ago, they were fantastic! RIP Joe, you will be missed. So female friday is coming up, please, please, please do Barbara Mandrell. She is so talented. Hope you listen to her, she has many hits, had a tv show and won the Artist of the year.
