A year ago now I had a bad fall and felt something in either my hip or lower back crack. Two days later my right leg was completely paralyzed. I went to the ER and they rushed me into surgery that day. I ended up severing a nerve cluster to my right leg and they were able to repair it to function again but I still have extremely little feeling in it. I can walk, I just cant tell if my bath is hot or cold or if my cat is clawing my leg. I've been scouring RU-vid for some exercise tips for rehab after the surgery and this video gives me a little hope. My lower back is still paralyzed and I have to use a walker just to get around. My legs work, my upper body works, but there's a disconnect at the waist where nothing works. Bladder, bowel, other important things. It's been life altering. I still get up and walk as often and as far and Im able to though. Going to try this routine out and hopefully regain a little independence.
Wow, keep fighting to gain more function out of your body! These are gentle initial exercises, so they are fine to try. Best of luck with your recovery
Really useful. Havent been told to do anything other than walk for the first 4 weeks. I'm 9 days post l4 l5 microdiscectomy surgery and this will definitely help loosen you up.
Thank you for your helpful and instructive guidance. I was diagnosed with lumbar spinal stenosis at multiple levels and had decompression surgery August 12, 2021 and have not as of yet received my physical therapy appointment. I have completed all steps with slight tension, but a good tension. I will update my progress. Today is 10/06/2021
hello.... is it possible to revisit this critically important topic, maybe a longer video with additional tips. Also maybe pre back surgery strengthening and building up of core muscles etc before lower spine is opened. Appreciate all that you and company provide.
@@MyphysiosaAuAdelaide Fabulous thanks. I hope the YY 'algo is kind to you guys being over in my favvv country. I heard it pushes mostly US based content....Canada has masses of top tier content creators and still cant get 50,000 subs after years of daily or weekly uploads.
@@Badad80 I am much better is being 3 months. Now my muscle having more sensitive i feel sore , but that's nothing compared with my leg pain and the side of my body bcos i had scoliosis also. Therapy help a lot . I am walking like i didn't had surgery, but like i said since i have more sensitively in muscles i have a little pain in my lower back. (Sore)
@@ingridramirez4436 Good to hear the positive feedback and pray u get well soon, me too in similar position and have completed 2 months if my back surgery. Expecting therapy to help getting back to normal activities.
Wishing you a speedy recovery. These exercises can be started from hospital discharge as tolerated, and continued up to the about the six week mark. Best of luck
Hi Matt, I had open decompression L4/L5 laminectomy 12 months to relieve severe spinal stenosis. I walk comfortably but find my balance is off. Also where I once could squat down and stand up again pre-surgery, I now find my legs aren't strong enough to support that action. What can I do to build strength in my legs without hurting my back?
We actually use sit to stand chair squats a lot in our rehab programs postoperative. They are safe and are very functional. Start with x10 twice a day, use a higher chair to start with , and just touch your bottom on the the seat then come back up. Best of luck 👍
This is very informative. Thanks. I had discectomy 2 weeks ago in Zambia. Am recovering well but i am failing to stand straight and my waist feels very heavy. The numbness on my butt and leg are disturbing my basic movements and exercises. Is there anything i need to do to help straighten me up and the numbness? Thank you
With our surgeons protocols we start these exercises for most people after 1 week. Always best to get the ok from your surgeon if you are unsure you are ready to start them this early. Best of luck
Hii sir.. My mom had open L4 laminectomy and forminectomy in the last week. Dr suggested to do physiotherapy like back , gluteal, and hamstring muscle strenthining exercises.. Is these exercises are helpful to my mom
It’s been six months since my wife underwent l5s1 mis tlif surgery But she still feels pain in her back What can she do better to relax her back? And get relief in her lower back Thanking you in advance
These exercises could be a good start. Surgery is usually to help leg symptoms but there can be residual back pain. Keeping your back flexible and your core strong is the best way to manage your back. Check our other videos to get more exercises. Best of luck
@@sayemahali542 sorry to ask, did you have back pain after surgery? Its 7 weeks from surgery and I am worried as I have pain somedays... thanks in advance
We get our patients starting these in the first week if they have their pain under control and are ready to get mobile again. Just start gently and make sure they are pain free. 👍
Im a hairstylist, bending and twisting my back is part of my job. I had the lumbar discectomy in L4-l5 done 2 days ago, I can walk without too much pain, driving or sitting is uncomfortable. How many days should I need rest before I go back to work. Last thing I want to do is herniate my disc again
Your surgeon will advise you around returning to work when you have your first review with them. Typically, people have 2-4 weeks off work , depending on their type of job and how they are recovering from surgery Best of luck
Dear Matt, I have gone through lumber disectomy of L4-l5 and L5-S1.It has been 20 days now but my numbeness is still the same with a very minor change to normal.please guide me what should i do to make it normal.
20 days is still early. It can take months for your sensation to improve. Hang in there and do your exercises and keep moving. It’s very likely you will improve over the coming months 👍
Let’s wait until your surgeon advises you next week. Each has their own protocols for when to start and which exercises to do. The exercises we show in our video are just general in nature and can be started within the first week postoperative as tolerated. 👍
It’s not uncommon for symptoms to take up to 12 weeks to steadily improve. Chat to your surgeon at your six week checkup. Best of luck with the rest of your recovery 👍
I have a surgery two weeks ago. I still have a little bit pain in the leg (foot and calf). I was told that this pain should gone in 3 to 6 months (nerves took a little bit longer to fully recover).
I have undergone spine surgery four years ago but I have lower limbs weakness with no pain.I can walk but not in a straight posture .If I resume to physiotherapy will I be able to walk upright and run????
Hi, we always encourage patients to keep working on their strength and conditioning. Over time it often improves. Getting the right guidance is important , so seeing a Physio is good idea. Best of luck
I had undergone bilateral D11 L1 screw fixation due to D12 vertebral fracture after an accident. My doctor advised me only walking as an exercise. The accident is before 1.5 years but now I am unable to do normal household activities and even unable to travel for a small distance due to severe back pain and leg pain. Can stretching and strengthening exercises help me? Please respond
Hi, it’s worth a four week trial of doing these exercises and see how much it helps. Your back will be sensitized and you will need to start the exercises very gently and only only do a few repetitions of each to start with. Try them x2/day. Let me know how it goes. Best wishes
Hiii Sir... i am from india and I have had lumbar surgery twice in L4 L5 . The last operation was 2 years ago so everything is normal but I feel my back very tight so what can I do for it? Please suggest me
Hello sir, My younger brother fell into the canal from his bike . After MRI report, the doctor told me that his two bons of rib are fractured and nerve is damaged so spin surgery must be done. Now 2day spent, but lower limbs are not working, only he feels when someone touch but sir , ankle and down its parts , he does not feel when someone touches. Please sir suggest me. I am from Bihar in India.
Hi, sounds like he has a serious injury. Best to listen to your doctors and follow their advice on the best treatment for him. Wish him best of luck for a speedy recovery
Sir I have l4l5s1 surgery two weeks before I did that exercise but after doing that exercise there is a pain in my calf and my calf become so tight Kindly tell me what is the reason of this
It’s always best to review with your surgeon if you develop any new symptoms in the early stages after surgery. Some nerve irritation after surgery is a common issue. It usually resolves by itself. 👍
Hi, 4 days post op in the UK. Can you please let me know how may reps and how many times a day you ought to do these exercises, specifically for the nerve glide)? Many thanks.
Hi, in the first 2 weeks we recommend doing these up to 4 times per day but only do 5 reps of each. From 2-4 weeks it can be twice daily 10-15 reps each. Make sure they are pain free and comfortable to do. Best of luck with your recovery 👍
can i do chair dance as in slow upper body shoulder circles lateral arm raises , heel /toe raises, leg side to side lifting leg just a few inches off the ground? v
Hi , I have gone through lamentomy and desectomy for l4-l5 herniated disc. It's been 3 months but my feet and last two toes and butt chicks are numb. May I know the reason? But doctor told me it will take 1 year for nerve to be heal? Iam also having severe back cramps. Help me please
Your surgeon is correct, it can take many months for the nerves to recover after being compressed. Hopefully over the coming months you feel some gradual improvement. Try to focus on becoming more active and conditioned as tolerated. Being able to do more things you enjoy is the best way to feel better 👍
I had a Spinal tumor (Schwannoma) at L2 L3 region and gone through a surgery. It has already been 9 weeks but i still feel pain around my lower back when i sit/stand/walk for about 45 to 60 minutes. Is it normal? Will it get better with time? It is really troubling with my daily activities. Note: I do not have other problems from surgery.
Some back pain still after 9 weeks is quite normal. Most people postoperative can have pain for up to six months. Hang in there. Pace yourself with your activities and listen to your back. Rest when you need to but keep up the exercises daily. 👍
Informative Sir, I had L5S1 surgery on 12oct’21. (PIVD, spine canal stenosis 3mm diameter) Now I am taking physiotherapy & walking but since last day I am feeling nerve pain in right leg. Concentrate behind knee & one point in hip… is it normal????
Hi, nerve pain into the leg is common after back surgery. It usually settles over the first few months. There are nerve medications that can help. Let your surgeon know about your leg pain. Best of luck with your recovery 👍
Hi, I had similar surgery a week back. I feel pain behind knee and one point in hip ; It is sometimes more and sometimes less. Can you suggest how did you deal with this?
Hello, I had my l5 s1 microdiscectomy down just under 2 weeks ago. I feel so much better but when I do the 4th exercise (head back leg up) I feel nerve pain and can’t get my leg any higher. Is this normal? Thank you
Yes, it’s a sign there is still some nerve tension. This can take many weeks to improve. Keep the exercises going but don’t push into any discomfort. Best of luck with your recovery
Everyone is different with their recovery. Most people though can start these within a few days. They just need to feel comfortable to do and be started gently. 👍
When you do the move around the 4 minute mark standing exercise nose out. If that hurts in the lower back would you think that is an issue with L5S1 disc? I had fusion L4/L5 a year ago and when I stand it kills, anytime my back is not perfectly straight. Even when I try and roll over in bed it hurts, but I think it might be the disc below the one I had surgery on. What are your thoughts and thanks for the video.
@@MyphysiosaAuAdelaide I get some pain here and there in my right leg but nothing like the sciatic pain I had before the L4/L5 surgery. I had another surgeon look at my MRI and he says I have annular tears? My neurosurgeon said he does not operate on Annular tears but most Orthopedic Surgeons might? I was told 4 years ago I would be back to doing what I was doing physically and now feel like I am 80 years old. Anything I do other than walk hurts my back now. Thanks for any advice.
@@KBradAdams Mmm, you have a complex presentation. Having a customised slowly graded exercise program that includes flexibility and strength exercises that can help you regain your normal movement patterns and your confidence to move is your best non-surgical option. I recommend you find an experienced spinal Physical Therapist in your area and give it a go for a few months. Best of luck. 👍
@@MyphysiosaAuAdelaide yeah doing anything other than walking brings pain to my lower back and side of right thigh. I believe the L5/S1 disc was bulging even when I had the microdiscectomy at L4/L5 then after rupturing it again and having it fused, I feel it’s even worse now I would have hoped it would have healed. When I do anything like unloading a dish washer bringing in food from car. Basic sweeping the floor laundry it hurts the rest of the day. The fusion at L4/L5 looks great on CT so can’t imagine it’s not the L5/S1. Do annular tears heal from PT or does it just help. Before back issues I was super active competitive in Brazilian JiuJitsu now look 80 just trying to get off the floor after basic PT. I’ve tried Stuart Mcgills big 3 with no improvement although I know my back and core is stronger but when my spine moves or is not straight I am in nerve pain. I’ll give it more time and see how I progress. Appreciate the input! Thanks
@@KBradAdams if it is an annular tear that is giving you these issues it is tricky. Sometimes they just do to like taking any flexion loading. If core work and normalising your movement patterns doesn’t help enough, then it’s back to your surgeon ? Fusion is an option.
Lamenectomy had done with titanium on my l4__l5__S1 in Calcutta on 19_01_2011, left sided pain stopped but I'm feeling very weighty since then.Hospital physiotherapist was advised some exercise to follow but no result. Then doctor suggest me to visit a pshichiatrist, since then I am taking venlafaxine150, libotrip, yet no result. Kindly advise me some exercise so that I can get relief. Thanking you.
@@ganeshchakraborty5485 okay. The exercises in this video should help, plus do the below sciatic nerve stretch video for your left leg. Let me know how it goes. Best of luck ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-szJY-4YH56g.html
Hi, you have a lot of history by the sounds of it! The basic advice will always hold true, that is, you need to keep your spine mobility as good as possible so that you can keep your function ie sit, get on off chair or toilet, get shoes on etc These exercises are great for maintaining basic function. They do need to be pain free during and after though. If they aren’t and you have tried them gently, then I recommend you see a Physio who can review your mobility and try some other exercises. Best of luck.
