I have to say I truly appreciated when you said " it doesn't taste like a French fry," nor would you ever call it one! I'm so tired and frustrated by people who claim " it tastes just like .....fill in the blank.." it doesn't and, I wind up disappointed & dissatisfied!!! So, thank you for your honesty!

We were told by an executive chef to: Place the turnip fries in a bowl of ice water for 4-5 minutes after cutting ....then pat dry...then do all the rest of the recipe. He said that putting it in ice water closes the cell walls so they are not wimpy....his turnip fries were amazing! Just sharing.

Yup, unless you have allergy or some other dire health condition, there is nothing stopping you from eating some actual potatoes once in a while. Also, rock on! Both of these channels are great. It's funny watching this video, I'm from Denmark and we grew up learning British English in school. Americans borrow a lot of names for vegetables and other common ingredients from other languages like Spanish, which makes it extra confusing to follow recipes (Coriander/Cilantro as an example off the top of my head).

Here is a tip/shortcut. If you have a pressure cooker, throw the vegetables in whole for 5-10 minutes (depends on size). This helps peel them and you won't have to par boil them. It's a win/win situation.

double frying is exactly right. My mum owned a fish and chip shop when I was a kid. She always said that it really was the only way to cook the chips. It also made it faster when you were cooking it in front of the customer. My mum would par cook a huge batch of chips (not french fries LOL) and leave them on butchers paper in a pile to drain she would cover them too. SHe said it prevented them from going brown as well. Then at lunch time when the crowd came in she cooked them up at when she needed them. We alway had freshly cut potato chips when I was a kid.

I miss fish n chip shops as well as pie shops in the UK so much. My mum used to take us to get mushy peas and fish pie all the time. I was born in England and grew up in the EU, but I've lived a ton of years in the US. I'm a US citizen, but I sure miss England. I have family there, and they said it's not the same. I said, "nothing ever is." 🥧

Here where I live, in Nova Scotia Canada, they sell rutabaga in the stores as turnip. I honestly hadn't seen one of those little purple guys until about 3 years ago in a specialty fruit& veggie store . I love it. We would add a bit of sugar to the water when boiling it, cubed, and mash it together with carrots. Of course thats off the table now that I'm low carb. I love jicama but its almost impossible to find here and the last one I did find I paid $8 for one about the same size that you had there.

Rutabagas I’m an expert at cutting rutabagas. Use your knife just rock back-and-forth gently just to get it started inside the rutabaga then get a meat tenderizer hammer thing and slightly hit the top of it down to cut through that saves you a lot of muscle.

My experience, every time, coconut oil makes everything softer, even more so than butter. I have never had anything get crispy in coconut oil. For frying it has to be avocado, or peanut oil. Of course, in many cases I will use home rendered tallow or lard.

I do use peanut oil for frying.Good for high heat.I'll try tallow,or lard some time.Sounds good.

I commend to you roasted okra fries. Trim the stem, wash and dry throughly, oil and salt and stick them under the broiler for 20 minutes or so. Nutritional yeast flakes add umami and will improve all of these. Okra ends up crunchy and roasty on the outside with a soft interior. Their texture is very fry-like, if not the actual taste. Net carbs is like 2.5 grams per 100 grams. Remember to get the young ones so they aren’t woody.

Thanks, ladyflimflam. I'm going to try this as I love okra!

Jan Myers Hope you enjoy it. I should point out that my broiler is a toaster oven so a full size broiler may run hotter than mine. Keep a close eye on these the first few times. That being said, don’t be afraid to aggressively roast these. Mine usually look burnt or close to it but they aren’t.

I do this alot. I also use a similar method with cut-up okra and they are amazing. After coating in oil, onion powder, paprika, garlic salt or powder, usually nutritional yeast, and salt and pepper on a baking sheet, I bake at @ 375° and sometimes finish with broiling if I'm in a hurry. So much like fried okra! Of course, this has nothing to do with French fries, but a great easy treat for okra lovers!!

Ann Parker I think of them as fries because it’s what my husband always wants with his hamburger. Also, roasting them whole gives them a crunchy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside texture that is much like the best French fries. Frankly, take pretty much any veg, oil it up or stir it in bacon grease, season and stick it in a rippin hot oven until it’s nearly burned and anyone who complains about this yumminess doesn’t deserve a seat at your table.

That sounds good. I grew up eatung chopped and fried okra but they had a little cornmeal on the outside before they were pan fried. There's even a burger place near me that started offering fried okra as a side.

One brick cream cheese, 8 servings bakers chocolate 3 or 4 tablespoons splendas natural. Melt chocolate first with a bit of butter then mix in sweetener then softened cream cheese. Add in whatever nuts you like, harden in fridge then cut. Amazing smooth fudge. I make it every week.

Have you tried radishes as fried potatoes? I can find online listings, but no videos. Some recommend pretreating (boil or steam first) or they taste like fried radishes.

Cook them in butter. They don’t taste like radishes once they have been cooked tender. Daikon needs to be parboiled to reduce the radish taste but little red radishes don’t.

When I order Steak Fries I always...Well, I used to Always...Order them a bit underdone. We Made a roast / stew in the crock pot 2 days ago with London Broil ,Beef Broth, a few Green Beans, a few carrots and Chopped Celery plus Cubed Jicama and those things cooked on high for 6 hours and were still crunchy. MY GAWD They were (it was) Good!

Dennis Steele Great idea in throwing the jicama in a roast. I’m going to have to do that a try!

A bread knife can work on hard vegetables. It won't be getting much use for bread on keto. When I made fried potatoes,I would cook them first for a bit in the microwave. Then fry them in the hot oil.It sure saved time, and trouble.I think it could work for these type of root vegetables too. You'd have to experiment with the timing.Peel, slice, put it in a dish with a little water? Micro, then fry.

I freaking love soggy fries! I hate the crispy ones 😂 I also miss fries the most after going keto. 😭 I might try to this though but I’m not expecting too much. I might try the jicama one and the rutabaga one. Thanks!

I love soggy fries.as a diabetic jicama has no starch.ive also made oven tater fries.if you put vinegar on them it changes the way your body sees it and doesn't spike blood sugar. I love all the veggies except zucchini.
