In this video I go through the installation process of a shower with a very low curb, the thickness of the sill " I also show a quick method of setting up screeds for the mud floor of this shower. The shower floor area of the shower was depressed by the GC so as to have the level of the mud even with the uncoupling membrane height of the main floor. In this way the curb could be set directly on the transition of the two areas. This is essentially how a curbless shower is constructed, however in this case the the curb actes as a low barrier to contain water, but still gives very easy access to the shower. The wall tile has alternating rows of longer and shorter ceramic subway tiles to give a unique look to this shower. The shower floor is a small mosaic hexagon tile and the main floor is an 8x8 encaustic tile. Shower system is Schluter systems.
All tile installed by Sal DiBlasi, Elite-tile Company, in the Boston North Shore area. This video contains affiliate links, which means I will receive a small commission if you click on the product link.

i did my moms kitchen in this exact subway tile for her backsplash and surrounding walls. its really nice in kitchen , however in shower i would choose some type of tile with a design or make a design with colors. this was the cheapest tile they had thats why i choose it for the kitchen. . a solid color in just one row in the shower near the top would really add a nice touch.

@@SalDiBlasi i understand , and thats the best tile if you are working for someone making money because its basically the cheapest. i did my moms kitchen exact same tile, easy to work with , first tile job and it came out looking professional for the most part. its almost easier and cheaper to cover a damaged wall with cheap tiles then drywall mud repair and paint again in some situations.

Sal, great video! The floor tiles with a flower pattern seem to be from Home Depot. Two years ago I installed a shower in my house (thanx to your videos) with printed-on tile like this one and the colors are running now and the tiles are becoming unevenly white. Looks worn out and old already after 2 years. I was also told that Home Depot pebble tiles are artificially dyed and they will discolor too in 2 years.

Hello Sal, First thank you for all your very professional work and advice. I hope it's ok to ask you some simple questions too as well as the more difficult. I just have some basic ones .. When you tile a ceiling why are you not worried about them just sliding off or not producing some kind of lipage since you have gravity working against you? Also do you ever use ready mix mortar or adhesive or do you always fresh mix your own? I see you where re-using you spacers after you set some tile on the floor, was that a professional kind of technique because once you set the tile you just didn't need to keep the spacer there anymore? Finally, what was the yellow spacer for that I see you would put behind the edge trim and then remove it? Oh one more thing is the key to making sure you don't have lipage is to use a constant amount of mortar and a constant flow of your trowel? Thanks Sal, that's enough of my silly questions for now.
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi 3 года назад
Once a tile is set into properly mixed mortar, it will stay there, it will not fall or move. Never use mastic, ready mix, in a wet area. Spacers left in the thinset can be hard to remove when the thinset cures, so removing them as you work can be a good idea. The yellow things are wedges amzn.to/3u1Lmva

@@SalDiBlasi thank you so much for answering my questions Sal, you are awesome. Thanks for the info on the yellow wedges. I used Chrome trim like that on my backsplash but I was wondering when you put the wedges behind the trim and the removed them as your tiling progressed, what was the purpose of using them on the trim .. do they need to be lifted slightly or something for them to set properly? Thanks again. Catch you next time and I'll keep watching if you keep showing, Lol

Sal, I love the idea of using the kerdi board as a screed edge! I haven’t seen you do this before, but it seems like a brilliant idea to do all the time. What made you choose to do it here? Also I’m trying to figure out how low I can mount my kerdi drain. If I use the Mapei 4-1, how shallow can the flange be over plywood?
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi 4 года назад
A friend told me about the Kerdi board screed, so I tried it here, so worked out good so now I am making a video about it. On the bag of 4to1 it says from 3/8 to 3" but I like to keep it at at least 1" at the drain.

Hi Sal- Quick question regarding the main topic of low curb: I'm designing a shower now which is similar to this bathroom in that there is a main bath floor area and an adjoining shower . Shower is about 36 wide at curb and about 42 inch long. All subfloor is slab at common grade. We have had to take out some of the slab in the shower and think we can take out a bit more to effectively lower the drain so as to be able to use maybe a 1 inch tall solid stone curb with about an inch drop from grade down to drain, for overall about two+ inches total drop in elevation down to the top of the finished drain.. In this case what is the best way to waterproof below the natural stone single piece curb? In my case, I could waterproof the entire floor in the adjacent bathroom area, but even then I still need the 1 inch height of the solid stone curb to hold water. My gut says not to rely simply on thinset or some other adhesive sealant applied below the natural stone. I do notice that you mentioned a product and seemed to apply a whole bunch of it below the stone curb you installed. In your client's case, is the curb height necessary to obtain your waterproof pan, or is the drain set well-enough below the bottom of the curb so that the curb height is only beneficial for either aesthetics, door function etc, but not for your water pan? This is a much simpler design if the curb is made of a substructure, waterproofed, then with applied stones on all 3 sides of the curb (not my preference, given that the whole curb is so low. Best and thanks, Mike
@snoodle877
@snoodle877 2 года назад
Sal I have a similar question, what and how did you set this curb?
@zimpler8340
@zimpler8340 Год назад
He separated the thinset under the curb from the shower floor thinset and tiles with a line of silicone because if the two thinsets are connected water can wick from shower floor to bathroom floor. You can then place curb about half inch over past the line of silicone and once dried, you can grout the front joint of curb facing the shower floor.

Most advanced grouts these days only come in sanded, Have not used the old cement based grouts in quite a while. However Sanded is for grout lines 1/8 and larger grout lines, unsanded is for 1/8 grout lines and smaller, 1/8 use either.

@SalDiBlasi

Yes, they were alternating rows of longer and shorter tiles, the layout was done for the walls. On the ceiling they were all the shorter tiles that would have ended up with a sliver every other piece , so the layout of the ceiling had to be shifted a 1/4 tile to make it work.

Installing the drain in a shower by a tile setter is that considered a plumbing job?? Can you get a fine for that? Some cases the inspector can have you demo the shower to have a licensed plumber install the drain

may i ask what prompted the "curb" v. a completely curbless application, i.e., was the pitch less than 0.25"/foot? thanks in advance and sorry if i missed this explanation!

This is what the homeowner wanted, it could have been left as curbless.

Sal, how did you keep your Schluter strip on the wall? I see you put spacers behind it as you went but what was holding it up? I didn’t see any thin set holding it until you put tile.

Sal DiBlasi Sal it was when you were tiling the edge of the shower entry where the schluter strip edge was running up the wall, the schluter edge I was wondering how you kept it fastened to the wall
@SalDiBlasi

Thinset fills all the voids as you tile, just some blue tape to help it stay in place as you go along.

What is the thinnest you can pack the mud bed at the drain, linear or other type.
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi 4 года назад
depends on the mud, some as little as a feather edge, others 3/8 or 1/2 inch, some have to be over an inch.
