hopefully this helps anyone with a F-150 or f250 with a panoramic sunroof. noticed it wouldn't open, quick investigation seems to have found a solution. comment below! thanks for watching!
I was having issues with mine, and what I found is that the rubber gasket that runs along the outside of the glass up against the roof panel will dry up over time, get covered in gunk, and start to almost bond to the roof. Which makes the moomroof not work properly. The solution is super easy and very cheap, so no need to pay almost a grand at the dealership to have someone "fix" it. With a wet microfiber cloth scrub ALL the gasket, front back and sides, as well as the parts of the roof panel that it meets. Use rubber conditioner in all the gasket, and use a silicone based lubricant on all meeting surfaces, including the roof pieces that meet the gasket. And boom. Good as new. Just do this once or twice a year and you're good 👍
common issue with the Ford sunroof, the tracks are made of plastic and continue to break. I've replaced my King Ranch sunroof twice and rails are broken again. Seems like FORD should rectify and recall the tracks, Especially since these trucks are very expensive!
@@GorefeastDrummer Yea if you're dumb enough to take it to the dealer and have some kid right out of high school work on it. But you can buy just the tracks online for around 150 bucks and about an hour of your time to change them out lol Mine have been broken for years on my 2017 f250 but still works. I just reset the tracks once in a while and unscrew the glass and clean the tracks and reapply kryton grease and it still works even though they are all busted up and cracked and broken in multiple places. It's honestly just typical pos ford saving few cents on cheep parts. Same as the mustangs with the china made mt-82's. Ford doesn't care about you or the American people and just care about the $$$ and they know you all will keep on buying ford and ford knows it and make their vehicles cheaper and cheaper every year. Most new fords "well pretty much all new fords" now have plastic oil pans and trans pans. If that alone doesn't scream cheep I don't know what does.
Had the same issue roof wouldn't close. Was still under my CPO warranty but the dealership had my truck for almost 2 mths and they didn't seem to have a clue for the first 1.5 mths. Finally got it fixed and like you now every time I use it I always open in the vent first then close and open the roof. Gotta admit I cross my fingers everytime I open the it. Clean and lube the track often and check the seals.
This happened on my 2018 F150 last week. Took it to the dealer and they quoted $900 to replace parts. I paid the $90 diagnostic fee only to give me time to try your suggestion first. It worked! Thank you for taking the time to post this video. You saved me $800 and change. Thanks!
This is why I didn’t get my f150 with a sunroof. I purchased mine and plan on keeping it for a long time so I knew it would eventually leak or have issues. Plus, we rarely use the sunroof in all our previous vehicles. It’s too hot here in Florida.
Mine stayed stuck too and I couldn’t get it into the vent, open or close. I pushed and held the “close” and “vent” buttons at the same time and that worked! Not sure why but it’s back to normal. Now I’m afraid to ever open it again. Thanks for posting!
I love you soo much man. Borrowed my bosses car today and same thing happened and you saved me. For anyone else looking for help Google search F-150 sunroof factory reset and that helped close it when I got it completely open. Turn on turn on turn on turn on turn on, click close button, let go, then hold close button and should work. Good luck boys
So I “fixed” mine. First, I used a small LEGO sword to go around the seal from the top. That got me to vent up. Then I got to full open. Cleaned the railways for the window of debris. Found little pieces of plastic from something broken but I don’t know what. Then, it wouldn’t close all the way. That kinda told me it was a sensor or something. So 15 minutes of looking and trying different things, in the end, I just gave it some help as it was closing and it closed all the way. Now it is functioning normally, but I don’t trust it.
Clean with alcohol, mine was doing the same thing. I did exactly what you did, vent the roof first then open. Works every time, I do have a smell but can not find any leaks
Since im Swedish i dont know if this is the correct word for it. But i would recommend you to lube?? the seal with a siliconebased spray like wd-40 silicone spray. Make sure you dont use a spray cointaining any petroleumbased contents (petroleumbased will make the rubber seal stick even worse and later on crack). I would also recommend you to clean the rails that the sunroof slides on. Q-tip and toothbrush should do the trick cleaning all tight spaces. And then relube the rails with lithium grease! Now your sunroof should open like brand new and also be protected against leaks even when in cold climate! Im gonna take a look at the rest of your videos now! Lycka till!!
This is exactly correct. I had the exact same issue on my 2017 F150. My sunroof broke 3 times. Come to find out the seal kept sticking in the center due to the Texas heat. I lubed it with WD-40 and haven’t had a problem since
Mine cost me $2,500 on my 2016 F-150 just after the warranty ran out. The parts inside are plastic. If the cable breaks you have to buy the entire unit and two new motors. I had complained about it sticking to the dealership for 1.5 years, but it didn't fail completely until after the warranty ran. The deal is that the seals stick and stress the parts (many are plastic). If you lubricate the seals on a regular basis with a silicon lubricant, it seems to solve this problem. Ford should do something about this. I got hosed.
That's annoying. Although that's just a symptom of sunroofs like that these days. There is only one I've seen without it and that was on my mom's '87 Nova but that literally vented up and went back down. No sliding. I do like the idea of the airflow and the cool view some days, but I don't think it's necessary and I do know the ones without it are actually quieter on highways.
seal sticking to paint and cause the jam. good you fixed it. panoroofs fail when not cleaned, maintained, lubed. they squeek, rattle, crack and break then can be costly to repair depending on what breaks.
I had the same problem on my 2016 leased F150, The problem started at the end of my lease I kept it closed I returned the truck and. Now I have a 2019 I'm sorry you had those problems too. Hopefully with my new truck I won't experienced those problems with the sunroom. Still a nice truck though
This seems to be a pretty common problem, despite the dealership claiming they don’t hear many complaints. I have a 17’ F150 with a panoramic sunroof and I have the same problem. Goes up to vent but won’t drop down to open.
Da Vert yeah, I ended up putting some dielectric grease on the seals and it dropped right down. Only problem is, the plastic track piece was broken so the glass made grinding/crunching sounds when I rolled it back. I have the new plastic parts ordered which were about $150 and I found a RU-vid video on how to replace them so I’m just gonna do that. The dealership and ford won’t do a thing for you if you’re outside of your bumper to bumper warranty 😑
Sorry you had the problem. I would let it set a couple of days without opening it to see if it will stick again and if so I’d go direct to my dealers service dept to get it documented.
I have a 2015 Platinum F150 which has had the sunroof break 4 times. Exact same issue. The seal seams stuck and the track breaks on me. I have to hit the vent button first. If I forget to hit the vent button and hit the open button, it breaks the tracks. This week after 2 years of remembering to hit the vent button, I forgot and hit the open button. Sure as poop it broke. And now that it's out of warranty the dealer is saying 10 hours of labor to repair and $3500. Facepalm. I think we need to start up a class action on the issue because it's clearly a design issue. The dealer has blamed trees around my house. I have spent 15k cutting down trees. There are absolutely no trees over the truck where it's parked. This is crazy.
I'm considering having my sunroof closed up and not with aluminum and rivets. I want steel to be welded in. Because you know its gonna break again...I detest cheap plastic parts. And if I use aluminum, it will flex, I thought about doing a race type roof that flips up, but that will leak most likely...
Here is what is wrong. Or was, if you've fixed it since ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wqeCjLI6mrc.html What was sticking it is a broken piece of the lift arms that has fallen down into the track. If you have not done that repair, I would highly advise you not use it until you do. I have other videos on how to lube it, program it, etc. Also, and this is very important: Every couple of months, vent the window. Wipe off the rear of the seal (on the front glass that is vented) with a wet paper towel or old rag. Then lube it. I use 3M Silicone Paste. Got a video for that, too. Then: Whenever you open it...ALWAYS vent it first. That will overcome any "sticking" that might have occurred between the two glasses, and venting it is much less strain on the lift arms than trying to pull it down and retract. So vent it first, then you can open it.
Have the some problem on my 2018 King Ranch F150. All I did was push from the outside a little bit and it started going back like it should. Not sure if this affects it or anything but it worked
Dude I had the same problem with my 2018 only when mine opened it went all the way back and broke every plastic piece. Took it to the dealership and thankfully I had bought the extra warranty because it was a 3000.00 replacement! But now it has some sort of issue with closing, it’s sensitivity is some touchy that when it touches the air foil it thinks there’s something in the opening and it reopens. I have to hold the close button down to get it to shut.
The dealer might know what the problem is if they have seen this before? I think you are right about the seal though. It looked kinda messed up as if it got sticky and then stuck. I just wouldn't want your sunroof to go kaput after the warranty is over. Let us know if it happens again.
Dealership just charged me $600 to replace rails. The extended warranty I paid $3,695 for only covers the motor. Didn't even leave dealer, hit the close and the rubber boots crumpled and jammed the sunroof. I'm NEVER getting the sunroof again. It's obviously poorly designed and should be a recall. I'm going to contact a Class Action lawyer and Ford needs to compensate for these repairs.
YES!! This is ridiculous. We are ALL having this problem! I started having water leak through the front grab handles on both sides right after the warranty expired. Very disturbing when you!re driving down the road. Recall or lawsuit. I’ll be checking my mailbox.
This is why I like my 2018 f150 stx no extra shit that can break. Its 4x4 locking differential 8in infotainment system is the most technology it has. I wad just going get the regular xl 4x4 supercab, but the stx was a great option. I like a work truck not a cowboy Cadillac. I do like your truck though. My wife has a 2018 explorer platinum. She got the nicer car and I got a good work truck.
So I found some brand new 2019 at a dealership here in TX. A few of them have the sunroof/moonroof. Think I'll be okay to buy one? Is it considered bumper to bumper warranty (hopefully it doesn't break) right?
Damian Lopez should certainly be covered under warranty. I’d do research on Ford F-150 forums to see if there is information when the redesign was rolled into new vehicles. Alternatively just insist the dealer replace the tracks on the sunroof and be done
@@freel213 The arms had a slight change in them roughly a year ago. Fall 2019 is when I saw the first updated set, and I install more than probably anyone. I just did a set on a 2019 yesterday, so they still break unfortunately.
Same issue here but do u think the sealing had been damaged because it was stuck? Because any smell in the atmosphere i can smell it even though the the AIR CIRCULATION is ON. There is no problem with the AC at all. Do u think it has something with the panoramic sun roof sealing!?
5k miles on my new super duty, been doing this for the last 2k and ford has my nearly $100k and the government has the other $100k I earned to buy this truck. My sunroof is bad, backup sensors, door rattles, alignment was bad on day one.
Mine stayed stuck too and I couldn’t get it into the vent, open or close. I pushed and held the “close” and “vent” buttons at the same time and that worked! Not sure why but it’s back to normal. Now I’m afraid to ever open it again.
If you're using the Raptor in a manner in which it is meant to be used, I've heard of sunroofs shattering due to flex in the body in off-road scenarios
I have a 2015 Edge AND a 2018 F150. BOTH of them have this very SAME problem. PLEASE tell me what to do. I took my Edge into a local dealer and they ABSOLUTELY RUINED the ENTIRE interior of my vehicle AND put some kind of “made up” shade in it. They left GREASY BLACK FINGERPRINTS EVERYWHERE! (It’s still that way)! That issue started at the end of bumper to bumper warranty. My F150 is doing the SAME exact thing now... i have NOT taken it to them because I’m still pissed about how they RUINED my other vehicle. PLEASE ADVISE ME!
Same thing my 2015 does. It will vent fine but if I try to drop down it binds up just like that. I guess I’ll give it a good wipe down with some wd-40.
My F150 sunroof did the same thing but no one was able to get it to work. It costed me $4,000 to put an entire new sunroof in the vehicle. Shortly after that I got water in my left rear tail light and they wanted $800 for that because it has the sensors. My doors started to make creaking noises when driving down the road and hitting bumps. My steering started to pull to the left and had front end issues.
DS TRUCKS I just use seal lubricant from pep boys, but any kind of silicone lubricant compound will work . I think Ford sells some for this application . Another good tip is to push up on the glass with two fingers to assist the motor when putting into vent mode
This is due to any defect in the tempering process, it is unnoticeable. It can vary with temperature and humidity with each day. I work with these F-150 sunroof panels and have seen them explode upon touching them. Very startling indeed.
Yeah, you don't have to do all that. Keep the seal between the glasses lubed...where they touch each other. That's the sticking point, and it puts enormous strain on the lift arms to break that seal. And always vent the glass first, before opening it. That breaks the seal and saves the lift arms, which is what was broken on this truck. (and all the rest of them) Clean and lube the back of the seal on the front glass, and it'll last much longer. But will still eventually break, just not as soon.
@@DS-TRUCKS I drive a brand new Volvo XC60 SUV and am currently in a Corolla loaner lol, so I feel ya. Still thankful to have a way to and from work and not be stuck with a rental bill though.
Sean, here’s my two cents for what it’s worth. Lube the seals real well with silicone. Close the sunroof, pull the fuse so you don’t accidentally open it again. Hopefully when you sell or trade the truck it will still work.
Get some see throough gorilla tape, similar and when it's completely shut then tape around the outer edge and the middle where the roof splits. Shouldn't be able to see the tape and it'l completely waterproof any cracks. Swap the tape out every so often and there you go. I'd love to see someone manufacture a single panel piece of glass that can be mounted instead of the split glass. Te glass is nie to have i guess but who really opens it that much?
