Part 1: • Low Table with Traditi...
Building a low table using only hand-cut traditional joineries (no glue or nails). The wood I used for the legs is Ash (I believe) and the milled material is Beech.
I'm away from my workshop and did not have all the proper tools. Some of the methods shown in the video are not the "proper way". I had to get a little creative with the limited tools I had.
*Disclaimer: This video is NOT meant to be a how-to. It only shows my work process.

This is really wonderful work. I don't usually like the "rustic" look of log furniture but this is really elegant and well done. Keep it up, it's a pleasure to see.

Ah - that dovetail joint is incredible. I used a simple lappped joint and now after seeing this I want to learn that one and remake it. So well done - thanks again for the videos!

And you should be proud of your work! Projects that grow from the wood rather than formal plans have an organic energy and require special skills ... and you clearly have them. Well executed, and so precise.

Thank you for your kind words! Allowing the wood to be as is requires more skills and work but I feel it brings out the organic beauty of nature.

as the green wood dries in situ, how will that affect the long-term stability of the table?
@toddschriver9924
@toddschriver9924 3 года назад
Seemed pretty dry to start, but, because of the way the rings shrink, the most likely outcome is some cracking along the length of the limbs and possibly a little twisting. Check my instagram for greenwood carving that I do @rock_dove_farm

@Salcifer
@Salcifer 3 года назад
@@quadroeffects9316 maybe dovetails down through the top with pegs through the sockets in the top the legs?
@richs5422
@richs5422 3 года назад
Possibly drill holes through the top and into the legs, and then fill them with dowels glued to the legs only, so the top can be removed and put back on upside down.

That bowtie or butterfly shape is inlaid to prevent splitting. So, most likely there was a spot there that looked liable to split and he did the inlay to prevent an issue down the road.

The precision applied is OK but the project is ugly. I'm sorry but look at the project design it's like an unfinished project.
@richs5422
@richs5422 3 года назад
The artist achieved what he set out to achieve. All we can judge is whether it fits our personal style or not. In his place, I think I would have planed two faces on each leg. Not sure whether they would have been parallel or at right angles to each other. That would leave some natural edges and some straight sides; it would be more similar to the top. Of course, even with CNC I wouldn't be able to make the joints nearly as well.

Mr. Loggins, back seat drivers are a dime a dozen. You build it the way you want it to look.
