Thankyou for reiterating that you can use what you already have! My biggest pet peeve is when someone goes zero waste they feel like they have to go out and buy new supplies. I reuse all my salsa and pasta sauce jars as well!

I have known people who threw out all their plastic containers, that would have lasted them 10-12 years, and replaced it all with glass. So all that plastic into the landfill rather than replacing with glass when it naturally ran out.

I do too, I also reuse any plastic take out containers to bring leftovers to work, I just make sure to use a real plate to heat up my food.

I stopped going for coffee in the morning when I realized it just wasn't any faster. It's like the myth was just shattered, and I thought "oh wait, I hate this." I'm not going to save three minutes at home by making a fifteen minute trip that's two miles out of my way to get something that is almost but not quite what I actually wanted to drink.

Just an additional tip for the whole freezing portions. If you have a silicone muffin or cupcake pan (for baking) you can freeze things in those too, then just pop them out and store in a larger container. Like with the ice cube trays but for bigger portions. 😊

A bandana works to wrap around the jar or cut the top part of a sock. I would recommend taking the frozen food out of the freezer the night before and put them in the fridge. Sometimes it takes too long to thaw depending on where you live or work.

Just to add to the idea of your morning routine starting the night before, I believe your week starts during the weekend (especially if you're a student or working a typical Monday-Friday job). What I do is prep some snacks while I watch some Netflix on sunday night and make sure I have enough food to keep myself going throughout the week to ensure I don't need to have food elsewhere or order takeout. Having single-servings is great to just take something out of the fridge and take it with me at the last second before I leave. Sometimes I remember when I'm already outside but, because it's ready-to-go, the tiny effort of going back to get a snack or a proper meal I know I love and will need is worth the convenience. Love your videos n.n

Wow the Mason jar thing is amazing I dont know why I didn't think of that. This would be a great way to incorporate some more vegan meals into my diet for lunchtime. My husband HATES beans, and I cant have soy, gluten, and nightshades, so it makes it difficult to eat vegan/vegetarian as much as I would like to because my diet restrictions and my husbands preferences make it impossible! Another tip: keep an empty container in your freezer (I have a ziplock I reuse) to put all your veggie scraps in as you go through the week or month to make a nice batch of broth regularly!

for using the ice cube tray, they are also super useful for making homemade candy/treats, you can but chocolate chips in bulk, melt them down, put a little in the bottom of the tray and then just add nut butter or fruit, top with a little more chocolate and you have package free peanut butter cups and bonbons.

Watch the quality of the silicone baking mats you get. I got some cheap (like $5 a mat) and they were rubbish. They stained and when I tried to scrub off something that had burnt on it the mat got scratched up. Then I splurged and got one of the more expensive ones and it has worked beautifully. No problems with it at all. Sometimes, you really do get what you pay for.

For veg broth i use Better Than Bouillon. I was buying those quarts of veg broth and got to be $$$ how much i make soup (and wasteful even though they’re recyclable). It’s a small glass jar and the one i bought 4 months ago is still going (i’d say it has about a month left.) Also for herbs if you have fresh herbs you’re not going to use- put them in the oven at the LOWEST TEMPERATURE (closest to 100F you can) for about 30 min (depends i forgot but just check til they’re crispy) and you have your own dried herbs that won’t go bad!

Tip: Most any produce item can soaked in cold water & regain firm/crispness... also try storing herbs, green onions, celery etc... Upright & in a few cm of water (like flowers at the market ... Lastly, the plastic bins with screw on lids rice & fruit etc can come in are GREAT to reuse for things you buy in bulk & for crayons/markers/...

We Love condiments. It’s just the two of us, but all of these condiments take up so much room in our fridge. Sauces, dressings, toppings, jellies, jams, gravy etc. The full size containers are more cost efficient, but take up more space. Any ideas for freezing or vacuum packing some of these items? We’re considering buying a mini fridge just for the condiments, but I’m hoping for a more economical & energy efficient option. Thanks for sharing!
@TheGirlGoneGreen

The Girl Gone Green + I discovered that gravies, fruit toppings & tomato based sauces can be frozen. I store them in small servings using either freezer bags or ice cube trays. Items that I can’t freeze, I share them with my Mom. We divided the full size bottles into smaller portions using small squeeze bottles. Collecting a few packets like ketchup, mustard or soy sauce, etc. from restaurants is much easier than full size bottles to store in our fridge. Finally, we’re trying to completely use only one or two types of condiments before opening up, or buying another one. This has helped us to enjoy a variety of condiments, AND free up more space in our refrigerator. I hope that maybe these ideas can help other people too.

Maybe in future technology will give us better options, but for now we have to do exactly what you said about baking sheet : to make unperfect choices , while me make perfect ones on other sides. Is that numi tea low waste? The bag looks like it’s plastic lined. It’s an improvement over a styrofoam cup every day but is that sponsor specifically committed to low waste (recycled packaging/the ability to compost the bag)?
@TheGirlGoneGreen
@TheGirlGoneGreen 5 лет назад
Hi Lauren! Locally the only tea options in bulk are green or black and they are non-organic. I've been working with Numi for over 2 years. They are a small family-owned company that really values fairtrade practices and working with organic, well cared for farms. I buy the bulk tea from them, it has a plastic seal. They are working on a fully compostable tea bag but they aren't quite there yet. Essentially I'm buying my own bulk instead of buying it from a bulk bin. Typically the stores still buy tea in plastic anyway. It's just the option I have found that works best for me. Of course, I prefer you find your own solutions. Green living is not a one size fits all :)

See whole foods plant based cooking. It explains it. It worked for me. Basically, one guy says, not to be mean rather to be truthful, he said, "The fat you eat is the fat you wear", and it's processed. Check it out.

I wish they sold ice in something other than plastic. I live in my van and I don’t have solar panels yet, so a fridge is not an option. I don’t know of any coolers that keep things frozen without ice, so...

I agree! Someone should get on creating a better system for ice

If you live near an ice machine they have an option for you to fill your own cooler, bucket, bag, etc. it cost .25 to a $1 less depending on how much you get. also even if you buy it with a plastic bag you get more and are way... cheaper than the gas station or store ice bags.

One thing that you can do is to add salt & water to your ice. It lowers the freezing point, makes the ice colder & it lasts longer. I always double bag it in freezer gallon Ziploc bags which uses plastic but the bags can be reused for quite a while & the fact that you can shape the bags to fit the cooler completely really helps keep the food cold using a minimum amount of ice.

Go to a hotel and buy it from the front desk...then fill your cooler from their ice machine. No plastic.

Yes! The tea shop that sold bulk tea near me shut down :/ so now I order my own bulk tea from the Numi website. The bag is paper and aluminum with a plastic seal. It comes with a lot of tea, I haven't finished them yet but I plan on using them to freeze fruit afterward

on silicone baking mats - they leach heavy metals; all silicone does. I prep my clothes and lunches every evening for the next day.

Wahhhht?! :( I feel like I just don't know what to use anymore... I use silicone spatulas and cookwares. I loved wood and bamboo but I feel like I can never completely clean them properly because they are porous. Arghhh now what...
@Stacy_Sunshine
@Stacy_Sunshine 5 лет назад
i figure people have been using them for millennia... We have wooden salad bowls, as well. I don't think it's "as porous" as you are thinking. it's not like a sponge. 8 kids, and we rarely get sick, and hand wash everything / no dishwasher. Stainless steel, glass/ceramics, and wood for us.

Stacy Thomas Oh interesting. So do you use a baking mat at all? Thanks! Wow you’ve got a big family but seem to have it all figured out! I’m only in a family of three but constantly have guests throughout the year such as families and friends who stays over for vacation so I would always make sure I have all the things I need. We’re not a vegan family but we don’t do pork or beef anymore so when I cook chicken, I’m always afraid of cross contamination with my kitchen utensils. I have a bamboo cutting board for just meat and I’m thinking if I should do the same for my wooden spatulas.

commercial poultry scares me. ;) I never have done anything special with my wooden spoons, ever, so my opinion is that when you are cooking with it, it's getting as hot as the food, so if the nasty bugs are cooked out of the food, it's probably okay on the spoon. maybe it's not as sanitary as possible, but I think we are often obsessed with that. and yes, I don't use a baking mat. I very sparingly use parchment or wax paper. Like, a roll of either will last me YEARS. otherwise it's old fashioned greasing the pan. sometimes flexing the cookie sheets will do the trick. There was a period where we literally bought nothing disposable, except school supplies, and as little packaging as possible, with 2 in diapers. I'm not there right now, but what I can say is that there is not a paper product I can't do without, and I did not have a silicon mat then, either.

Stacy Thomas Wise! That’s really true. I might have a problem always paranoid if things are cleaned enough haha. Will apply some of things I learned here. You’ve been a great help as well, thanks!!

Fill a glass jar with loose leaf tea in the bulk section. Zero packaging, zero waste. Screw your Numi tea sponsorship, I see foil and plastic in their bags.
@TheGirlGoneGreen
@TheGirlGoneGreen 4 года назад
Hi there! These are bulk tea bags. Most stores that carry tea get them either in bags like this or from metal tin shipped in plastic. I support Numi for their commitment to farmers. It’s a truly family owned company and they uphold the highest standards. Yes, they sponsored me in 2019 but I’ve been promoting their tea for years. It’s a grey industry without a lot of regulation. The tea you buy at the store may be plastic free but It might not be ethical or organic. I trust Numi which is why I choose to work with them. That’s my choice, you have yours! 💕 have a great day
