No signs of buffer damage with the "Heavy Buffers" A5 set-up! Recoil was noticeably reduced and felt very smooth. Convinced that the Winchester M80 load is junk!

Great video! I live in Sweden and have had several bad experiences with Winchester White Box .308 recently, so I don't think it's a problem limited to one batch unfortunately. Olin Corp used to make good, affordable ammo up until 15 years ago or so, but seems to have been on a steady decline since then.

Thanks! Yes, it's unfortunate what is happening in this country! It's everything! Very little is actually made here anymore! Greed and government regulation (corruption) has driven everything to outsource or go off shore! Once upon a time we put men on the moon!

Nice!!! Glad you figured it out. I never realized how finicky 308’s can be!!! I’ll keep that in mind when I’m done with my 308!!! Great vid!

I second the Winchester ammo issue, cycling issues, etc, and my firing pin punched a hole completely through one of the primers before lol. I completely stopped buying it. Sticking with the PSA stuff in 308. For the price and reliability, it's hard to beat.

I ordered some of the AAC stuff a couple days ago. I'm using the "High Pressure" bolt design on this rifle and was still getting cratering from "primer flow" on the Winchester. The primers are very soft! I will never use it again!

Pete, I'm glad to see you are getting your lock back issues sorted out. My guess is that the Winchester ammo is loaded with a powder that is a little too fast of a burn rate for a gas gun which would explain the cratering (a typical sign of high pressure) while also not having enough port pressure to reliably cycle the rifle. Have you tried doing the "White Oak test" before? When troubleshooting lock back issues it is a pretty reliable way to determine if a rifle is short stroking or has too much bolt velocity. BTW where did you find such a great location to shoot? I just moved to North Las Vegas and have shot at the county range and out by the prison, but your location looks nice and secluded! I'd love to find a place where I place a target further and stretch my rifles out more.
@peteregger7928

It's definitely something going on with the so called Winchester "M80" load which so far is the only ammunition I have causing the new lock back issue. Quite a few videos ago I thought the issue was short stroking when the bolt carrier instead of the bolt would hang up on the bolt catch when I actually had the exact opposite problem. It was an over velocity issue going back into battery regardless of gas setting. If I turned the gas down then it would eventually become an actual short stroke. After installing the "Heavy Buffer" A5 set-up the over velocity issue was solved but now with the Winchester M80 I get intermittent lock back on the last round. I have since this video opened up the gas port from .088" to .092" and believe that this will solve the underperforming ammunition or cold weather short stroking. My goal was to get this rifle to run on anything and below freezing weather with minimal recoil. I think I got this time but haven't had the rifles back out yet. The cratering shouldn't be happening as I'm running "High Pressure" bolts so I think that may also indicate that Winchester is using soft primers from who knows where. I'm not familiar with the "White Oak" test so I'll have to look into that. In the this video I was out at the State Prisons. I drive around the corner a ways where fewer people go. The Clark County Shooting Park is really one of the nicest in the Nation but I'm always a little apprehensive being around a lot of other shooters! Thanks for watching and the great comments!

Good to see it's doing better. I was pretty confident you'd get it squared away. The AR-10 carbine recoil system is a far better setup than the LR-308 carbine system, the LR-308 is just not enough weight/spring for the mass of the large frame carrier.

Thanks! I found out the hard way using the Aero Precision stuff. Wrong spring and 3.8oz was way too light for my rifles. I have no use for it any more so it will most likely end up in the trash. Maybe it works on someone's DPMS pattern but the AP stuff wasn't even close to being right on mine!

I noticed you are running a standard design of buffer retainer pin. Those tiny pins are subject to failure...and when they do they typically throw the brojen tip into the trigger/hammer area, causing problems. LWRCI has developed a new retainer pin which is FAR more robust and fits in just like the mil-spec part. I have put them into all my ARs. Look into it, Pete! One more potential problem obviated!
@peteregger7928
@peteregger7928 3 месяца назад
It's an off-set from Galloway Precision. They're made out of stainless. I installed it to keep the buffer from hitting the retainer pin during firing. Allows for more BCG engagement against the buffer and prevents buffer to retainer pin contact when the receivers are closed. The only time the buffer is supposed to touch the retainer pin is when the rifle is opened up but some manufacturers get the retainer hole position wrong. Another somewhat common issue is that the BCG carrier is too short. The MilSpec dimension retainer pin I tried to use during assembly was a close call and just barely allowed the BCG to move the buffer off the pin when closing the receivers. If the buffer hits the retainer pin during firing then eventually mayhem will ensue. I'll take a look at the LWRCI... could be a better mouse trap?

@@peteregger7928... I have the same issue you described on yours. I'm using a couple of M4E1 Aero lowers and not really happy with them. Issue with sloppy takedown pins also. I'm going with an offset pin also.

Thanks Chris! Can't tell you how many comments I have had disappear! Yes, I think I finally cracked the code on these builds! I liked the A5 set-up from "Heavy Buffers" so well I just ordered another one for my other LR308 and a spare "Rifle" spring for the future. Noticed a big enough difference in recoil on these builds between the carbine set-up and the A5 to where I feel it's worth it. Not paranoid about anymore buffer tube wear on this rifle. The Aero Precision carbine buffer kits I started out with will never be used again and most likely are headed to the land fill!

Maybe the issue was the tube, could have not been perfectly centered or something. Everytime i use that “m80” white box i have to turn my gas up or the gun tries to double feed … or fails to eject almost every round. I really need to get a chrono, I’ve been trying to clone mk262 and m118lr, i have ammo that groups great but have no idea the velocities im getting. I usually just go up until i start to see signs of over pressure drop my charge down a little and then look for accuracy. The process works fine but kinda sucks because sometimes it’s weeks before i can get back out and shoot. I put an A5 length tube on my rifle so i could use standard ar15 length buffers because they’re easier to find in different weights than the stubby 308 ones. I need to try a heavier buffer or a stiffer spring or something,i still can’t watch my hits/misses with the gas turned down as low as i can put it and be reliable. I’ve also thought about trying a reduced mass carrier, maybe that would help cause that kak carrier is chunky.
@peteregger7928
@peteregger7928 3 месяца назад
Convinced the "White Box" M80 I have was very much under performing! Maybe it was a bad lot but I won't be using it again! I think it was a combination of things that got the carrier tilt under control but mostly the longer head, larger housing diameter and heavier weight on the buffer. Sanding the corners of the retainer pin slot on the bottom rear of the BCG was cheap insurance. The Wilson Combat and Odin Works BCG's are 18.6oz and are some of the heaviest on the market. They are chunks! Very happy with the A5 set-up from "Heavy Buffer's"! A noticeably difference and no more buffer tube damage!!!

@@peteregger7928 yeah I’m pretty sure the KAK is made by the same people as from comparing my bcg to yours (the best i can from the screen) they look exactly the same. Arstoner branded lightweight bcg $119 14.5oz, Wilson combat LW bcg $300 15.5oz, jp carrier only $280 10oz, brownells TI bcg $299 12oz. A regular milspec 5.56 bcg is about 11.5 oz, might be worth a shot to get the brownells TI bcg to throw in the 308 gun and see if that does anything,that’s almost half a pound difference which I’d think would give a lot less recoil.

There was a very light coating of White Lithium on the spring and plenty of oil in the tube. The Forward Controls A5 tube is machined very smooth. Very little friction even without lube.

One of the greatest reasons I never buy ammo with it is unreliable and all levels of pressures. My 308 reloads really BARK when it goes off and the primers are flat, and casing eject from the AR 10 some 20 feet.

@peteregger7928 15 дней назад
Seems to be a much bigger variation in 308 and NATO 7.62 ammunition even based on what little I have used. A lot more to consider when tuning gas port size and buffering systems than .223/5.56. I had no idea what I was getting into but I finally cracked the code! $$$ Lol! Unlikely I will ever go down this road again! Most manufacturers making complete large bore AR style platform rifles with their huge resources can't seem to get it right either!
