I run an a5 tube with a damage industries enhanced rifle spring and a standard m4 buffer...h1 ,I played with different weights and the h1 configuration ( 2 steels 1 tungsten ) works perfectly, the spring is softer than the the shorter springs and is much easier to rack the action and is easier on the bolt catch...much smoother shooting...

In later videos I ended up with the A5 Carbine 8.5 oz using 308 rifle length springs on both LR308 rifles. The Heavy Buffers 308 stubby at 6.5 oz with Carbine spring was a huge improvement over the Aero Precision 308 Carbine 3.8 oz setup. I have kept the Heavy Buffers Carbine stubby setup as a spare, it works. The AP 308 stubby setup with Carbine spring is now in the trash because it was causing a BCG over velocity condition and buffer tube damage. The Heavy Buffers A5 setups with rifle springs made a huge improvement in recoil and the rifles now perform perfect! Thanks for watching and commenting.

Thanks! Hoping I get things figured out soon! Tuning this rifle has been challenging! It seems the 20" rifle builds have been sorted out and seem to run decent even with different calibers. Carbine set-ups even with the longer 18" barrels are more elusive! I'll get there eventually! I expected some of this at the beginning so not completely annoyed yet! Lol!

I ran the Odin Works and the new Wilson Combat and ended up with the same results. After thinking about the bolt catch a little more decided that maybe the Aero Precision was off a little but wasn't the primary issue. I manually tested one of my AR15's and was able to get the bolt catch caught on the bottom of the carrier as well by putting some slight pressure on the bolt release lever. This got me to thinking it was more of a timing issue as in bolt speed. Could still be to slow but Clint at Heavy Buffers felt it was to high of a velocity. Maybe he just wanted to sell something? This might also explain why the Odin Works unlocking side of the bolt lugs were getting hammered. I know some of this may look like a shotgun approach but there are a lot of things being looked at on the bench and I often fail to convey that in the video.

Just a heads up LMT AR10 style rifles use a A5 type of buffer tube (A tag longer or shorter can’t remember but like 1/8” or so either way) and a rifle length spring with a H3 carbine buffer. I know it’s a diff type set up but the back half buffer system should be the same…… all else fails a A1 or 2 buffer system with stock will work as well. Just after spring and buffer installed run your BCG in the tube and verify the gas’s port does not hit the top of your lower receiver/buffer tube. I’ve seen where the wrong buffer system hits the top and with damaged lower or BCG hope this helps and good luck. If u want a AR10 style I’ve found buying over building is a better option due to lack of Mil Spec/standards I recommend ADM or LMT Aero is ok but there QC has dropped over the years. Nothing better than a ADM 6.5 Cr or LMT’ s……. But the prices are STEEP

Yes, I've seen two different internal dimensions for the A5. One is 7.750 (3/4") and the other is 7.625 (5/8"). The Forward Controls version I got from Heavy Buffers is the 7.750" version. I may be putting the A5 on the first LR308 that I built that's working but is showing some lower buffer tube wear right behind the retainer pin. Looks like the buffer is being rocked or just some soft metal or improperly anodized. The buffer is smooth, no nicks or dings. Haven't talked about that one in videos yet. That tube is also Aero Precision. Gotta get this second one working before I take another look at the first build. Definitely opened a can of worms going large frame! Thanks for the suggestions! All comment options will be explored!

I had the Odin Works adjustable buffers from last year. Just ordered a few extra tungsten weights for them. I've been knee deep in it for a while now! To much invested to throw in the towel. The other rifle is working but I'm wondering if it's maybe just on the ragged edge and I don't realize it? I sent Wilson Combat an email asking what they drill the gas port to and one of the girls sent me a PDF drawing of the barrel which did not show the gas port size! It seems that 308 rifle builders especially using the 20" barrels have it figured out at 18.8oz BCG, 5.5oz buffer a 308 rifle spring using a rifle length gas system with a .096" gas port. The numbers for the Carbine set-up on the other hand with an 18" barrel are all over the place! So many of these complete large caliber rifles don't even work right from the manufactures either! I will never build or buy another one!

So my larue pretatobr 7.62 (AR10) came with a A5 buffer tube , 308 rifle buffer spring, and a standard AR15 H2 buffer. I have 5000 rounds down the pipe with no problems and no adj gas block. That guy from heavy buffers saying not to run a standard ar15 buffer is bullshit. Don’t buy into his expensive ass buffers.
@peteregger7928
@peteregger7928 2 месяца назад
The very last video I did about a week ago I showcased how well the A5 and the "Heavy Buffers" 8.5 oz standard "Carbine" size buffer mitigated recoil! Huge difference from the Aero Precision 3.8 oz "stubby" Carbine set-up which was causing buffer tube damage and impossible to stay on target looking through the glass. It's now in the trash. You cannot run an AR15 standard "rifle" buffer in any Carbine or an A5 tube. Really bad stuff is about to happen but I don't think that's what you meant. AR-15 Carbine collapsible 7" tube for 308 must use the shorter 308 Carbine spring and shorter 308 "stubby" buffer. The A5 7 3/4" or 7 5/8" collapsible tube uses the standard length "Carbine" buffer and rifle length 308 spring. His buffers are stainless and very good quality. Already bought them and function tested so that train left the station! Lol! I'm not sure how you can run your AR10 reliably with any type of ammunition? Hotter 308 or lower powered NATO with low recoil, adverse weather, dirty rifle, with or without a suppressor and no way to adjust the gas? You must be cherry picking your ammunition? This has not been my experience with 308. Glad yours runs so well! Larue must be a 308/7.62 Wizard to run anything on a fixed gas system! Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@peteregger7928 I reload my own ammo and also run factory PMC Bronze 147 grain. My standard carbine H2 and H3 buffers works in both my AR15 and AR10 reliably for 5000 rounds . I run an A5 tube on both my ar15 and ar10 and one has a spacer for the 5.56 to run the carbine buffer in the A5. I run tubbs .308 ar10 flat wire spring so they work in both rifle and carbine but the spring larue Tactical sent the gun in with works just fine which is a .308 rifle spring . I never been recoil sensitive so it doesn’t bother me. I just don’t believe in paying for something that can be done for cheaper.

I may be wrong, but I think you are going the wrong direction..Using a rifle length gas tube on a 18 inch barrel can be troublesome to begin with (less dwell time) which may need a larger barrel port.. There can be a lot of variables with rifles using the same port size, BCG's, etc..Adj gas blocks will leak more gas compared to a standard gas block.. This means a rifle can become under gassed using an adj gas block if the rifle was on the edge to begin with..Over gassed rifles will behave as if they are under gassed, but will have incredible recoil compared to normal..Didn't your rifle run better with the adj gas clock opened all the way?? If you don't open the barrel port then a weaker spring with a lighter buffer would be better than increasing the buffer weight and spring tension..
@peteregger7928
@peteregger7928 3 месяца назад
I'm new to the LR308 platform so I'm not sure what over gassed feels like. The original Odin Works rear bolt lugs becoming hammered and the bolt driving past the catch and then the catch snagging the carrier on a last round might indicate what Clint from Heavy Buffers was talking about? For now I don't know. The Aero Precision buffer is 3.8oz which seems pretty light already and the AP spring I believe is to short. After taking the RifleSpeed off the barrel and inspecting I could see no signs of gas leakage other than a very slight amount of build up right where the gas tube entered the block and seemed minimal compared to some of my AR-15's that run fine. I have ordered some gas tubes with bends if it gets to a point where I pull the RifleSpeed off and try a non-adjustable. The absolute last thing I will do is drill the gas port larger but it's on the list.
@hairydogstail
@hairydogstail 3 месяца назад
All adj gas blocks will leak around the adjustment parts by their design..If the I.D. of the gas block is a loose fit to the barrel journal, I bed them with a little amount of green loctite, but I only use a small circle of it around the gas port of the barrel or the gas block could become very difficult to remove..I also make sure it doesn't get into the barrel port..A little goes a long way.. I have had to drill out ports on my 5.56 barrels before but I agree, it is best to drill out the barrel port only as a last resort..I insert a metal cleaning rod in the bore, so the drill bit does not make contact with the opposite side of the barrel port..Some will use a wooden dowel ( wood shish kabob skewer).. I do know it is much easier to fix an over gassed system rather than an under gassed one.. I have used BRT EZTUNE Gas Tubes with smaller port sizes to fix over gassed rifles..They work great, but are very expensive and not cheap for a gas tube....Looking forward to see what the fix is for your rifle..Good luck!@@peteregger7928

Thanks for the input! I own a boat load of AR 5.56's and have never had this much difficulty tuning them. The one AR-15 that was the most picky was using a Criterion Hybrid 16" rifle length gas system. It ran fine except for the last round hold open. Ended up being the bolt carrier was a little too snug. The BCG in this LR308 rifle is very smooth to go into battery but offers a little more resistance when unlocking then my other LR308 that I built. It's only a little stiffer now with the new Wilson Combat then when I was running the Odin Works so I think that may have been an extension break-in issue? When I just unlatch the charging handle and use my pinky in the back of the carrier it now unlocks the bolt without as much effort from when everything was brand new. I'll eventually get there. Thanks again for the suggestions!
@peteregger7928
@peteregger7928 3 месяца назад
The Heavy Buffer spring has more coils and is longer so it will initially have a little less resistance but have more of a progressive rate as it compresses. The Aero Precision buffer is light already at 3.8oz and I believe the AP spring is to short. As others have commented I may be headed in the wrong direction but I'm walking backwards so I can still see where I started from! Lol!@@Allenmar73
