Beautiful job! The Audi is a well designed car with nice lines, but it is expensive to maintain when it gets some miles on it. The LS swap goes a long way to make the Audi into an excellent road car. Thanks
@@projectLSaudiA4 hi there, could you shed some light on parts needed to marry the engine to the transmission? Ive got an A8 d2 4.2 auto and would love to put a ls1 engine in it
@@danielhristov6175 the 6HP automatic in your A8 is weak and also won’t work with my components. I have designed my components for manual transmission but it should be possible to use an 8HP55 from the MLB platform cars with a TurboLamik TCU and a slightly different crank adapter-I plan to look into this soon. I plan on launching a website at some point. This is taking longer to iron out the manufacturing issues than expected but I’ll post a video here once website is launched. I developed everything and my father manufactured all the components. We are working on ironing out the bugs to offer a kit soon. The A8 subframe and transmission mount is different than the B6/B7 so not sure how the clearance would be. I assume you would have more room but no promises and you could of course need to fabricate these. I’m also not certain on motor mounts but I assume they would be similar to a B7. You would need: -LS engine. Can be any engine, working on LS4 support also. (I picked up an aluminum 5.3 for $500 locally) -B8 A4/A5 manual transmission. Still working on confirming B8 S4/S5 compatibility. I picked my transmission up on eBay for $250. -Aftermarket ECU such as Holley Terminator X -Audi Q7 alternator (found for less than $100 eBay) -Custom Drive Shaft (I got mine locally for $500) I will supply dimensions for mine instead of selling. -Electric water pump and manifold (using a Peirburg CWA400 on my car with a welded LS4 water pump housing, CWA400 can be found on eBay for >$100 from BMW N20, N55 etc) -B8 3.0 TDI Clutch and flywheel (good for ~700 ft-lbs and clutch is roughly $300) -LS4 Harmonic Balancer ($100 new on Amazon) Parts I would supply: -Bellhousing adapter -Flywheel -Starter and custom bracket -Motor Mounts -Transmission Mounts -Alternator Bracket -Power Steering and AC compressor bracket (Power Steering & AC compressor plus all lines can be used from a B7 3.2 A4, haven’t checked others) -Canbus bridge for Instrument Cluster (has to be used with Holley EFI) -Hardware for all the components Modifications: -Notch subframe or go tubular. -working on a tubular subframe to offer -B8 A4/A5 or S4/S5 shift linkage which has to be shortened. -still working on a better solution for this. -Clearance front core support (retain Audi 3.2 Radiator) -Aftermarket radiator fan. Got my from Summit Racing for $100. -Radiator hoses (I pieced mine together at O’Reily Auto Parts) Still working on getting accurate quotes for everything as still ironing out functional details and component design for lowest price point possible in today’s economy. It’s going to be a few thousand at least.
Been following this for about two years now, so hyped for the kit when it comes, got an ‘07 a4 with ‘02 s4 motor and trans swap and want something a bit beefier
A8 would be sick! I’ve had some health issues and life going on so haven’t made much progress of components. I will post a video when the components are ready for sale.
Not a LS fan by any means, but I'd really consider doing this swap to my Avant over the 2.7t that ive been consodering. Wpule love to have a reliabl3 V8 in my avant. Hope to see this get completely sorted soon!
Thanks, yeah to be honest this was the first LS swapped car I’ve even driven. I’ve always been an I5 fan personally. I’ll post some updates soon I hope 🤞
Absolutely yes 👍 saw some of your posts on audizine, how is the option of a kit coming along? I have a B6 S4 and will def want to do this when I need to repair the 4.2. Love the motor but adore larger V8 with a cam 👌
Thanks! The kit is coming along pretty well. I want to test out the components for durability for a while to make sure everything works well before selling. A couple weeks ago I took the A4 to the track to see what it would run, arrived and waited for street tire class and it wouldn’t start. Got it back home and realized the starter bracket bolts walked out and it likely sheared the bendix shaft-so I have some more work to do for sure. I made some design changes to the bracket and now I’m waiting for my father to make the new components. The other thing is I need to get an 0B4 transmission and measure it because I’m fairly certain the release bearing height is different.
Congrats 👍🏼awesome job, she runs like a rapped ape,now the big question will you make kits for sale? My wife owned the same car 6 speed trans, the Audi dealership says #3 piston has no compression, it runs but only gets up to 35 40 spits and sputters motor is gone but trany and driveline is in good shape, can’t muster to scrape it, not really many Manuels around anymore been sitting in the driveway for 2 years lol
I’m loving the v8 sound and I was actually thinking about doing the same . Instead of an Audi though I have an 2008 vw Passat and was wondering if you could give some knowledge or thoughts on what engine swap I should do .
Hey man I would love some guidance. I read in the forum post where I believe u said u used the 0b4 trans instead to give u more in the engine bay. My question is how much different was it to swap the trans. For instance I have a b5 that I was about to swap an 0a3 trans in however I always wanted to swap the ob4 trans to it but since it hasnt ever done I didn't want to get stuck where as the 0a3 and 01e has been done b4. I would love your insight on what I should expect. Sorry, I would've pm'd you but I dont know ur contacts. Thanks ahead of time.
Transmission is much larger than 0a3 and barely fits in B7, so I have no idea on B5. Subframe has to be clearanced on passenger side or go tubular (haven’t confirmed if it clears), using this transmission will push your motor 6 inches towards firewall so you’ll have to make motor mounts, new transmission mount would have to be fabricated as the B8 doesn’t bolt on, and front axles are not available off the shell for B7, so I ended up making my own, and lastly the driveshaft is gonna need to be a different length and newer transmission used splined output. So why do you want to use the 0B4 transmission, for an engine swap??
@projectlsaudia4 For better weight distribution. My build is primarily to make the b5 a good canyon carver and if it will bring the engine 6 in back it'll make a huge difference in how it handles. And I need to keep the awd bcuz I live in Buffalo, ny. I'm surprised that i haven't yet to see it done. I've also spoken to Harp about how he was able to pull the engine back with his 01e swap and it isn't the most feasible way. I bought the cleanest b5 I could in the country. And I chose the b5 primarily because of its short wheelbase otherwise I actually preferred the b7. I also am using the 1.8t engine again bcuz I want the nose to be lighter. Although the b7 is different than the b5 swapping transmissions between both of them have been done withouth excessive fabrication. I'm in the middle of setting up my garage for the winter to get working on this project. If I'm missing anything pls lmk. I truly appreciate it your advice is exactly what I needed to see thanks 👍!
The 1.8t should bolt up but I’m not positive, might have to get 0B2 (Audi A4/A5). Another thing to keep in mind, is the earlier transmissions have flange driveshaft output, which is what I used. The shift linkage is really tight in the tunnel, and there’s no room for an exhaust on the passenger side so it has to be routed out the driver side. In addition to moving the engine back 6 inches, these transmissions will lower the engine as well as the axle cups are higher. Lastly, I’d recommend a tubular subframe. Race3 Motorsport out of Canada has them for around $1000.
@projectlsaudia4 I wish I knew Race3 in the past. I did find it. Harp the guy who did the b5 v10 swap also recommended a tubular subframe. I'm starting to get everything ready and it's exciting but I'm also nervous. I've pulled engines with the help of friends and installed big turbo setups but this will be the first transmission swap. But the results will be worth it as I'm sure it was for you. To be able to pull the engine that far back changes how the car drives. I have help so I won't being doing it alone. I do have time and I'm willing to put as much time as I need to do this. The wife won't be happy with it though lol.
Completely Random question..... How much easier do you think this process would have been using the 4.3 Vortech? I was just looking and its actually smaller in every way to the Audi 4.2 and can be built to over 800hp and would naturally have more torque because its the same displacement with fewer cylinders.
I’ve pondered the newer gen 5 4.3 (LV3) and yes you are correct. Those motors just aren’t quite as popular nor do they sound as good as the LS. But they would solve the packaging problems and most likely allow the use of an 01E or 0A3
Custom flywheel and adapter plate to mate LS to B8 Audi A4 transmission, using 4.11 rear diff from B6. Checkout my other videos and shorts as I have documented the build process. I will be selling components to make this a bolt on solution so subscribe for when the time comes!
Hey my 4.2 b6 s4 is on its way out I’m looking into different swaps I was going to ls but I thought it would be extremely pricey what’s the ballpark of parts being worth?
Well to be honest I’m not entirely happy with the current design / cost so I still haven’t finalized the kit. I’m actively looking into reducing manufacturing costs via a design change for the bellhousing adapter / flywheel / starter, but currently the kit as-is would cost around $4,000. This is mostly because I have to outsource manufacturing. Doesn’t include the motor or transmission nor does it include the ECU. You would get: bellhousing, flywheel ring gear, starter bracket, motor and transmission mounts, serpentine brackets, front CV axles, and a canbus bridge (designed for Holley Terminator X Max ECU only). Radiator from V6 B6/B7 and AC compressor, Alternator from Q7 3.0TSFI, and electric water pump required. Audi Wiring harness and subframe would need to be modified and doesn’t include items like clutch, clutch flywheel (yes it’s OEM two piece design on the 0B2/0B4 transmission), GM accelerator pedal, drive shaft and other miscellaneous items that are required. In other words, I’m not ready to sell this kit yet as it’s not a complete bolt on solution yet. I have prototype components that I am testing / proving out that would reduce the cost by $800 roughly. I’ve also found the components needed to make a plug & play wiring harness but still needs some thought / time. Caleb
Using a Teensy 4.1. I wrote a Arduino program to pull canbus data from the Holley and send to the Audi can gateway. So as far as the car thinks, the Audi engine is running. Here’s the forum where I got the Holley information: ls1tech.com/forums/pcm-diagnostics-tuning/1967890-diy-getting-data-holley-can-bus.html#post20515597 The Audi canbus information is the same as a VW Golf which I found the DBC file for.
I think I’m gonna put a 5.3 emblem on it lol. It’s not tuned still, so MPG is crap and because shift linkage isn’t the best so I don’t have 6th gear-plan is to fabricate a cable linkage eventually. I plan to take to AWD dyno once I get some free time.
@@projectLSaudiA4 i would help you tune it if you were closer. What tuner/software r you using? Dont run it hard without a tune. Maybe you can share files and i can fix the tune for it
@@AngelR1987 running terminator X, so it’s just running in open loop. I’ve logged it and AFRs are close but no idea how much additional timing I could run without knocking. My neighbor runs a speed shop and has an AWD dyno so he already told me he’d tune it for free. Just haven’t had time to work on the car for a few months, so it’s currently sitting.
@@projectLSaudiA4 perfect. Open loop => the ecu will try to re-adjust. I’d run close loop as a safety measure, but if anything your friend knows too. Ill also be uploading vids soon of different projects
There’s gotta be a way of remotely helping you tune your car .. you’ll need a laptop and the usb cable to terminatrix. Driving it without a tune is hurting mpg, drivability and everything. Let me know
Dont know if you will see this but i need some info bro. I just blew my 2.0t and i wanna ls swap. What did it take to make everything fit? And how hard was it to swap electronics
I have a C7 a6 3.0T which I just replaced the motor mounts on, unfortunately it looks like that are very different than the B7 style mounts. I hope to support the B8 A4/A5 and C7 A6/A7 within a couple years AND the ZF 8HP automatic transmission.
All of my components are designed for the B6/B7 A4, which is nearly identical to C5. I’m still working through some design issues with the starter so once that is sorted I will be selling a complete bolt in kit.
I made a canbus bridge, which will be included in the kit, to convert the terminator signals to communicate with the Audi. Everything with besides cruise.
@@joelsenneville1228 fits 0B2/0B4 and 8HP55. Problem with the 8HP is your only option at the moment is a TurboLamik controller. While there is still snow I’ve been attempting to make a controller of my own but it’s not easy.
Subframe and the motors mounts are very different, and the electric power steering is going to be an issue. Maybe someday but right now focussing on the B6/B7 😕
Problem is when the design or durability of components such as timing chains are inherently flawed. I’ve seen plenty of times oil changes were done on time and car was beautifully maintained only to end up in catastrophic engine failure.
@@projectLSaudiA4 I have a 07 A6 4.2 V8 just had my entire engine overhaul. Which took care of all the oil leaks new timing chain. Rear shock. Coolant system. Updated my MMI system.
