Lubrication system on a Lycoming O-540

How a Lycoming O-540 sends lubricating oil to the internal parts of the engine.
Looks like I wasn’t very clear on the thermostatic bypass valve part.
Here’s Lycoming’s Verbiage on it:
While the oil is cold, this system allows oil to flow through the oil filter without passing through the oil cooler. As oil temperature rises to approximately 180˚ F, the valve closes and forces the oil to pass through the oil cooler. The oil then returns to the accessory housing where it is routed through the oil filter adapter, the filter and then again through the filter adapter, accessory housing and finally into the crankcase.

Excellent presentation. Im about to pre oil a 20 year old factory new IO-360 and I can now see how to get oil to cam lobes, rocker arms, prop governor, and crank & cam journals. There are what looks like 1/4 NPT plugs at the fwd ends of the lube rails that can be used to prelube everything before dry cranking the system with the starter. Thanks for posting

@@fly6tech776 I think I seen it where you placed plastic tubes on both sides and pumped oil on one side until it came out the other?

@@fly6tech776 I like it and don’t understand why Lycoming never published a Service Instruction. It’s seems like a better idea to do this before dry cranking. Thanks

Great content and presentation. Next time, turn the phone 90 degrees so we get a normal picture aspect ratio instead of the "looking through a keyhole" effect.

One of the best video. Thank u so much... O320-D2J works on the same lubrication system?? Refering to the oil movement in the crankcase..

Been looking all over for exactly this. Thanks. I am also looking for an explanation of exactly how the air in the crankcase case gets to the breather tube coming out of the accessory case.

@@fly6tech776 Thanks so much for your quick answer will look for the actual apertures as such. Working on reinstalling my engine after rebuild due to that crankcase AD when when I was wondering where something say a washer would end up if dropped down the breather tube with hose off as that could easily happen, had a plastic cover but …..what if. The tach drive/ breather area case “plumbing” is What I cant visualize.

@@fly6tech776 I cant get a video or pic or diagram that shows the bit where the tach shaft enters the accessory case on the crankcase side and on the other side has a bulge which seems to include both breather and tach out. Hope that is clearer and hey thanks!

Can you clarify the part about the vernatherrm opening to send oil to the cooler? I thought it closed, stopping the shortcut to the engine and directing all oil to the cooler, which is always "open to circulation". Or am I wrong? Thanks. Great video!

Newbie question: does the aeio540 provide better lube than the io540 though you may not be doing acrobatics. A plane I saw with io540 installed regularly exceeds 400 degree head temp..just wondering if aeio would help that? Pipistrel panthera
