Here is a video series on a 1960's set of Ludwig drums I am cleaning up for my students.
I will take you through the process of minor repairs and cleaning to get the drums fully functional.
They have the Rogers Swivomatic tom mount which is unusual for a kit of this era. I believe these mounts were installed after-market but since there are no extra holes its possible they were ordered from the factory this way.
I show you the inside of the drums and how I clean them.

I have that same set which my older brother gave me with the same hardware.I was always curious about that too but he swore that's how he purchased it.The 18" floor tom has Feb 20 1962 stamped in ink on the inside.I need the bass drum and tom bracket, and also the tom arm, they're hard to find.I also got three swivomatic bass drum pedals from him, I absolutely love those, along with a 1960 COB Ludwig Super in excellent condition.I love that guy.Thank you Rick for all your great videos.

When Phil Seamen and Trevor Morais switched to George Hayman drums they had the inside drum coatings treated and the drum fixings were very solid.Trevor told me his kit had a bigger sound compared to kits of the same size

There was British Rogers in the early to mid 60’s. They used Rogers hardware and bread and butter brass lugs. The parts did not have USA stamped on them. 6 ply Beachwood with 6 ply reinforcement rings. Boosey and Hawk shells. That might be how Ringo and Keith Moon had access to the parts.

The tom mount is definitely an after market addition,Ludwig and Slingerland consolette rails were notoriously poor mounts, and as music moved from the jazz to rock era in the 1960's it was common practice to swap to Rogers Swivomatic mounts which were much sturdier and stayed in place.

Then why is there no evidence of a prior mount on the bass drum or tom? There are no extra holes anywhere, and I have been hearing from several folks who have the same setup with no evidence of rail mounts existing. I have rail mounts on some other Ludwig drums, and the hole pattern is completely different.

When Ringo picked out the kit from Arbiter Music, he had the Swivo put on. It is documented in one of the Beatle Bio's. Sorry I can't remember which one. It was a common practice back then in the big shops. Frank's Drum Shop in Chicago had most of the drums delivered without tom mounts. They would install the one that you wanted, while you waited in the shop. They had a repair guy in the shop all of the time. I can't remember his name, but he was always there. This was easy to do, as so many of the drum makers were local. Ludwig, Slingerland/Leedy, Camco were close by. Rogers was a few hours away in Ohio....@@rickdior
