On Lumix cameras you can add or remove camera settings from your Quick Menu. This is a super handy feature. Thanks to one of my subscribers for asking this question.

Marlene, I purchased a Lumix G9 about a month ago and am delighted with the camera. Fortunately, I discovered your video's about four days ago and they have been an absolute boon. Pitched at the right level, easy to understand and at the right pace for a beginner. Thanks for putting in all of the work and effort I shall certainly recommend them to my photographic friends here in the UK. Just about to start on the Custom mode tutorial, its made life so much easier for me. Many thanks.

Wonderful to hear this from you, David. You will also find extra tips and info in the comments of my videos as this G9 community is very generous with their knowledge. I’m still loving my G9 after 3+ years of heavy use and still learning how to use it better as I explore new subjects and work with different lenses. Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks Marlene, another gem! Suggestion for another video, some newer G9 owners on a Facebook Group have been asking about Bulb mode and slower shutter speeds to capture moving water.
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 3 года назад
Thanks for watching, Sue! I’ll have to dust off my ND filter and head off to my local creek. Luckily it’s not frozen over anymore. Cheers and thanks for the question. P.s. with a 60s Max shutter speed on the G9, it’s unlikely you need bulb mode, especially when shooting moving water outdoors. Back in my 35mm film days, the Max shutter speed was 2 seconds. So that’s why we used Bulb mode. But of course it’s also handy for astro photos.

Well I noticed a few days ago that the Fn2 button was not bringing up the Quick Menu on my G9 so when I saw this new video from you I paid attention. I had noticed that when I pressed the Fn2 button the red light was shining out the front of the camera instead of the Quick Menu coming on. I was very puzzled by this! But I had also noticed (by chance because it is right next to the Fn2 button?) that pressing the bottom of the wheel above brought the Quick Menu up. And indeed when I clicked on the next group of Function Buttons the bottom part of the wheel is indeed Fn18 and it is assigned to the Quick Menu. So there are two buttons assigned to the Quick Menu. So then I did a Quick Search (ha!) of your videos and found the one about re-assigning Function Buttons and got the info I needed to change the Fn2 button back to Quick Menu. Thanks so much for appearing at just the right time to help me fix that problem! But how on earth had it got changed so easily because I certainly had not deliberately changed it myself?
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 3 года назад
Well that is the big mystery, because it's not super easy to change the Fn buttons! Maybe someone else got hold of your camera. At least you got things sorted out! Thanks for sharing your experiences.
@Stalled-wm3qd
@Stalled-wm3qd 3 года назад
@@ImageMaven Yes, it is indeed a big mystery because I found that the bottom of the wheel (as you explain in your Function Button video) is Fn18 which is normally not set to anything. So somehow it had been set to Quick Menu and the Fn2 Quick Menu button had been set to the red light operation. I would have had to gone deep into the menu to change Fn18 so I have no idea how both could have been reset unless I did it in my sleep! Very strange! Anyway, as you say, I have fixed it now and set the Fn18 back to nothing and Fn2 back to Quick Menu..

thanks Marlene. This is quite an odd interface, Panasonic has come up with. It took me some time to conclude it's not quite as Quick as the name suggests. I wanted to add two options from the same setting such as 1:1 and 4:3. Then I could switch between the ratios with a two taps: one on the Q button and a second on 1:1 or 4:3. But that's not Panasonic's thinking. Thanks for the video... I might still be trying to find out how this works without it! :)
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 6 месяцев назад
You need a function button or C-mode for what you want to do. The quick menu saves you from scrolling and hunting for the settings you want to change but even with what you’re doing it’s still very quick. It will save you from hunting for that aspect ratio menu. I use it all the time.

Hi Marlene - Your G9 videos are wonderful for use with my newly acquired g9. I have a question about the shortcut customization process. I want to include photo style in my custom menu. When I set that up, the screen shows that there should be 4 pages of different photo styles, but as I toggle over, only pages 1 and 4 are available. Thus I am unable to select any photo styles on page 2 or 3. Why aren't pages 2 and 3 shown and is there a way to fix this?

I don't have a GX8 camera. But I'm looking at the GX8 owner's manual and I don't think you can assign the stabilizer to a Qmenu item in that camera. But you can assign it to a Fn button. thanks for your help Marlene. But I really struggle with this G9. I know it sounds bad but I actually look over at my demolition hammer when I am having issues with this camera. If the camera had been a bit cheaper I would have smashed it by now. I have owned a lot of cameras, but they were all film cameras. Leica m4p, Pentax 67, Nikon 801, Rollieflex twin lens, Canon F1 and that's only some of them, so I am not new to photography, but I am new to digital. Other than a couple of point and shoots I have not had a digital camera with this type of menu system. I seem to be able to find what I want in the menu one day and the next day I can't find where I was. I try with this thing everyday and after 3 months I am getting pretty sick of it. uhg!

Hey Cameron, This video is or more advanced digital camera users. Don't get overwhelmed. I have some videos with the most important digital camera menus to learn first. But in a nutshell: Image Quality and Size. ISO, WB, Photo Styles. Here's a playlist that I made. Hope that helps! ru-vid.com/group/PL420D56637D097924 Also, download the pdf camera manual (link in video description), or use the booklet that came with your G9 and put a bookmark on some pages so that you can refer back to it. Eventually everything will stick in your memory. Also some of these things you only set up once and then forget about them until you're more advanced and ready. So don't stress. And if all else fails, put your camera on iA mode and just get out and take photos for fun and worry about all the deep menus later. Merry Christmas!

@@ImageMaven I enjoy your videos and respect or input a lot. Thanks again, I have the FZ-300. Takes very nice photos. I have been looking at the g-9 for a couple of years. That is a lot of money for me. I do Landscape, Wildlife, Birds, Birds in flight. I keep seeing post of focusing problems. You never seem to have any issues. I want the 100 to 400 lens. People keep returning them because the say the manual focus is very stiff. That lens and body is a lot of money. You never say a thing of focus problems. I have watched all your videos. Good job, I love all the features of the g-9 right to the focus stacking. Very happy with the FZ-300 I do not want to be disappointed with the G-9.

@@Santamike212 I haven't used that lens, the 100-400. I have the 100-300. Nice feel to it. But a good friend of mine has the FZ1000 II bridge camera and she takes great photos of birds in flight. But she needed a lot of practice. Mostly her shutter speed was too slow. No matter what camera you have, when shooting with a super long lens (like the 100-300 or 100-400mm) it's challenging to capture birds in flight. Maybe it's not the camera, but more practice that you need.
@lyniles3881
@lyniles3881 3 года назад
@@Santamike212 Hi! Sorry for butting in here, but it's not the manual focus that can be stiff per se - it's the focal length/zoom selection. This has a lock facility and I'm certain that on some samples of the 100-400mm lens the friction clutch doesn't come fully off. This should only bother you if you are wanting to change focal length whilst taking video. It doesn't worry me as I only use this Panasonic-Leica lens on my G9 for stills and for this it's a great piece of kit! I also have the Panasonic-Leica 12-60mm lens and this is also a fantastic bit of equipment and has a very smooth focal length changer.
