Here's a video I've been meaning to do for a while - a few cinematic test shots using the Lumix GH5 paired up with the Atomos Ninja V monitor/recorder. The perfect combo to supercharge the GH5 and get that lovely 4K60 in 10 bit 422. Recorded in Devon, UK earlier today. Giving this footage a quick edit once again reminded me how good the GH5 still is, still holding its own against much newer and more expensive competition.
Camera: Lumix GH5
Recorder: Atomos Ninja V
Lenses: Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8L II, Canon 50mm f/1.4 & Viltrox EF/MFT speedbooster
Filters: Tiffen Black Pro Mist 1/4, Tiffen Variable ND
Settings: 4K UHD, 24p & 60p, 10 bit, ProRes 422
All Shot handheld
Edited in FCPX
Graded with Custom LUT and FilmConvert

Great footage boss! Making the GH5 look good! I love how it's still a very relevant camera in 2020 even with all of the other cameras that have been released this year. Keep up the good work sir!

Good work, looks great. Can i ask, do you shoot more 60p over 50p? Im fairly new to all this and have only really messed with 25p & 50p as in UK. Thanks
@RoweFilms
@RoweFilms 3 года назад
Carl Ring thanks mate. Always 60 and 24. 60p vs 50p is the difference between 50% or 40% playback speed so it gives you a bit slower slow motion. I don’t worry too much about NTSC/PAL. It only really mattered in the days of analogue TV. 23.98/24 is the cinema standard today regardless of where you’re shooting. Just have to watch out for flickering lights indoors as it’s 50Hz frequency here in the UK, but all you need to do is switch your shutter to 1/100 to get rid of it. That’s pretty much it. Hope that helps

What HDMI cable are you using? I’ve ran through soo many and can’t seem to record 4K 60p 10bit 422 without it skipping on me.

Hi, I have same gear that you have, can you please detailed the settings of the camera (include vlog-l profile), codec, etc. Another request, can you please explain how do you set the exposure using Ninja-V, I noticed that you are under exposure at least one stop, Am i right?
@RoweFilms
@RoweFilms 3 года назад
Settings were 4K 60p 8 bit 150mbps in camera, pushing out as 10 bit via the HDMI setting. Picture profile was V-Log L with no adjustments to the profile, just as it comes. Codec ProRes 422. Exposure wise that's a pretty big topic to explain in a comment as it depends entirely on the scene and lighting conditions, but I mostly use waveform and zebras (set to 75%). Generally speaking, with outdoor daylight shots like this with loads of bright sky, I expose as high as I can get away with without clipping. Basically when the zebras show, dial back slightly. Then I bring the exposure back down to where it needs to be in post, and grade. If highlight clipping isn't so much of an issue then I take a bit more care with the waveform, dip into false colour now and then, basically make sure skin tones and middle grey etc sit roughly where they should be. But as a general rule I always try to have a nice bright exposure to get the shadows out of the noise floor. Hope that helps

@@RoweFilms Appreciate the reply! basically we are doing almost the same, the difference is that I reduced the sharpness in the v-log to -5 and use ProRes HQ. Just a nother question please , did you use the VND and BPM filters at same time?

@@RoweFilms even with 10bit 24fps?
@avsvisual6786
@avsvisual6786 3 года назад
@@jonatanurban9360 you won't visibly "see" the difference between this and the All-i 400mb/s codec. But like he said in editing/color grading is when you see the difference (between 4k 60 10bit vs 8bit) if you shoot alot of 4k 60 and want 10bit. I sent back the Ninja V after doing some tests vs the C4k All-i 400mb/s codec. Wasn't that noticeable of a difference even grading 4k 60 footage. In my mind the main advantage to me is being able to have a TB of storage (or more) with an SSD. That's awesome, and if I didn't already have a monitor I probably would have kept it, but I opted for (4) 256gb SD cards that can handle the 400mb/s instead
@jonatanurban9360
@jonatanurban9360 3 года назад
@@avsvisual6786 these sd card's are so extensive. It might actually be worth buying an atomos and ssd. + extra features.
@avsvisual6786
@avsvisual6786 3 года назад
@@jonatanurban9360 lol they 256 definitely are for sure, but they are cheaper than some others I've seen (I can't imagine needing CFAST cards!). I would get the Ninja if I didn't have a monitor already. But I was thinking about when I don't need/want or can't have a monitor, it would be nice to shoot that high codec and not worry about storage. So essentially I almost spent that same on 4 256gb cards as the Ninja, but I'm more portable (not that I'm traveling any right now lol). I would definitely get the Ninja if you don't have a monitor already, but 1) don't waste your money on the Angelbird SSDs, get a Samsung it worked fine, and 2) don't get the AtomX card reader, just get a cheap m.2 SSD to USB 3.0 reader to connect to your computer, much cheaper
