It would be interesting to compare images from this lens with the f2.8 version at f5.6. I haven't decided which to buy, planned use is for birds, but shooting from a ten-foot Zodiac. Another interesting, well-presented post. Thanks again.

Thanks! I haven't tried the F2.8, but I suppose both lenses are very good. If you need that extra stop, can afford it and the extra weight is ok, go for it.

Excellent review, Matti! I am thinking of this exact kit, only with the S1 rather than the S1R, as I don't need 47MP regularly, and for the ocassional large poster print I produce, the 96MP "High Resolution Mode" of the S1 would more than suffice. You've convinced me of the stellar image quality, i.e., sharpness, of this lens. One question though...what is the brand of hand strap you use on your S1R? Thanks again!

That strap is a one off made by my daughter😀

I have a sony a7 III and a panasonic S1R, I hesitate to buy a Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II lens or a panasonic S 70-200 F 2.8, it is to take sports photos in night with correct lighting. Thank you
@mattisulanto

The Sony combo would be better for sports, in my opinion.

OK -- I have a pretty large (too large!) collection of vintage lenses for my vintage cameras -- and with adapters I use them on my G85 -- and I have quite a few in that traditional zoom size of approximately 70-200mm. And *NONE* of them are as large as that lens you can barely pick up!!! :-) Those Leica-engineered lenses (for both Panasonic full-frame and MFT) are awesome, but really expensive. Don't forget about us MFT Lumix users!!! Hey -- it's great to see your sample photos, but I'd love to see you out shooting also -- see how you set up, how you use straps for your cameras (MFT and full-frame, small and huge lenses), how you hold them, and in general your technique. Thanks! Go put Peter F. to some use and have him be your video camera man!!! :-)
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto 4 года назад
Thanks for you comment. So far most content here is about MFT so there should be no fear about me forgetting anyone. In the end it all is photography, after all. I'm aware that I should show more of me shooting, but I find that very difficult to do. If I'm out taking photos and I try to film video, even with a camera man (Peter, who is not available always) at the same time, it seems both the photos and the video turn out bad. I've done some videos like that, but I it's very difficult. Sometimes it's ok to just shoot something, or pretend to be shooting, but most times I really want to concentrate on my photography and I really can't do anything else at the same time. I'm trying to figure out a way to that. Maybe get a Gopro or something.

@@mattisulanto -- Hey! I volunteer to shoot video of you out and about taking photos! I'll do it for free! Well, I'd need travel expenses to get to Finland! :-) Seriously though -- if I were local I would love to do that for you. And yes -- I love photography, but I also love videography (family videos and perpetual B-roll when I am out hiking) -- and it's a struggle to decide *WHICH* I am going to do when I go out hiking. I did learn that if I try to do both then I don't do a great job at either!

Hi Matti, it's a long time since you made this review, but any thoughts on this lens vs the 70-300 macro?
@mattisulanto

I have never used the 70-300mm so I can't really say much other than the obvious, like more reach etc.

Fantastic lens, I am using it on Leica SL, I guess next investment will be the 1.4x teleconverter.
@mattisulanto

The TC 1.4x makes sense with this lens, if you want keep your bag light and add some more reach.

@** The Panasonic f4.0/70-200 functions very well on my SL, AF if very fast and I like in particular OIS function of this lens, image quality is great and I am comparing it to my Leica 24-90mm zoom. No regrets in purchasing it. I mainly use it for landscape and nature photograph, I am aware of its bigger brother the f 2.8 one, but I have no need for it that is why I purchased an f 4.0 one.

Thanks for the review. I am not concerned about lowlight capability of this f4 lens. I think this will be fine. It is more about blowing out the background when using it for portraits/object seperation. I am wondering why there aren’t more reviews of the 70-200mm f2.8 ? Having said this we need more faster S Pro lenses! Unfortunately the Sigma L mount glass is not at par when it comes to AF.

@@mattisulanto @mattisulanto I read her/his comment incorrectly. Now I see. I thought she/he was concerned about low light performance of the f/4. Just couldn't see the not part as I read quickly. So, I thought you can say it's a trash or okay or something about. However, TheOneMonk, definitely has concerns about background blur of the lens. And only if I were you I would know what you should have said. I can only estimate. Maybe you should say it's background blur is amazing from 125mm... or maybe make a short video about background blur or you can say your opinion and add that looking at sample photos is going to be the best answer but, that's what I can say, that's my opinion. I am not feeling good to give you an advice on what you should say. There's nothing wrong with it, except I feel like you're not asking for an advice about what to say, you're just angry. But I don't know which is true. And lastly, it's normal that I don't know which equipment you are using and which you don't at the exact time. Additionally it seems like you have used this 70-200 f4 S pro lens and maybe you remember. Have a nice day

Is this me or is this an issue with this lens. When I focus using AF, then pull back the clutch for MF, to be more precise, the focus resets. ie. the image goes out of focus rather than remain at the area where I AF on.
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto 3 года назад
If you use the MF clutch, the distance scale determines where the focus goes. When you pull back the ring and if the focus scale happens to be, for example, at 3 meters, the focus will jump to that, as it should. If you want to fine tune AF, you don't use the MF clutch. Use the focus ring, but don't pull it back. Use the MF clutch only if you want to focus manually.

It's a cracking mft lens but compared to even the ff f4, it's a little slower and as said the dual is makes the biggest difference. I'd love the 2.8 but price is still rediculous as its the size of it.

"I recommended some other reviews" - most reviews was kind of not very nice about tele converter 2x, and when you actually try it, you just got that most youtube REVIEWERS just tell bulls**t. So, need to consider ony practical/pro photographer, who know how to use gear, not just through bag of money and think that become a photographer that way. This lens is awesome. Only complaint is about hood locking design, it sucks - incidently fall off if you press that little loose lock button.
@mattisulanto
@mattisulanto 4 года назад
I haven't seen those TC 2x reviews, but they might be not kind because it takes two stops of light and that is a lot if you start at F4. Also, 2x converters generally are not as good as 1.4x, but I have no experience with the Panasonic 2x converter. I would guess it has to be decent, why would you even make one, if it's not good?
