DP Stuart Morgan has been testing out the 5.9K Apple ProRes RAW shooting capability of the Panasonic LUMIX S1H when paired with the Atomos NINJA V. He took the combo to Antigua and shares his shots in this video, along with thoughts on the system and some practical tips on working with the camera and recorder.
The NINJA V captures highly detailed 12-bit RAW files from the LUMIX S1H over HDMI. The 5.9K RAW footage from Antigua beautifully demonstrates the stunning dynamic range and detail that the combination are capable of. The unprocessed files are extremely clean, preserving the maximum dynamic range, color accuracy and every last bit of resolution from the camera. These ProRes RAW files allow for greater creativity in post-production with perfect skin tones and easily matched colors, ideal for both HDR and SDR (Rec.709) workflows.
The NINJA V and the LUMIX S1H give users the choice between recording 10-bit ProRes video for fast turnaround projects, or stunning full-frame 5.9K 12-bit ProRes RAW for more creative flexibility. Combined, the LUMIX S1H and NINJA V become an extraordinary workhorse - especially for delivering the best HDR possible.
NINJA V and S1H owners gain these new RAW features free of charge. Users can update by downloading and installing AtomOS 10.52 Beta from the Atomos website. Panasonic have released free firmware update version 2.1 on their LUMIX Global Customer Support website.
