It's finally here! I hope you enjoy our journey putting the S1H beast through its paces. This really is an epic camera. Feel free to post your thoughts. And what would you like to see from my channel next? Let me know in the comments! Tommy
@Rowe Films, awesome vid Tommy! Subbed and liked. Tommy meet S1H, S1H meet Tommy. No need for dating and courting. Now get on with it and get married! I have the A73 and use it for stills, GH5 for video but added the S1H for one system that does it all except at times I need af. Enter the EOSR for lighter setup and need for af as a one man crew. It’s going for $1399 with adapter with holiday sale but got it for less so I couldn’t resist. Hope to see more of your video content in the future and learning your workflow and editing skills if you can do some tutorial videos. Happy holidays and looking forward to see more of your content in 2020!
Thanks man glad you liked it! Sounds like you have a great setup going on there. Happy holidays to you too mate see you in the new decade! Some of that absolutely on the cards ;-)
Honestly its an amazing footage and story telling review mate. I think whatever camera you will use, the output coming from you is definitely looking great
I was considering buying a second hand S1H as my first "real" camera in 2024 to learn it all and well, you made me very excited about it ! I hope Panasonic realised that this was the best add/review for their S1H and at least offered you one ! Great work overall.
Best review I’ve seen on it, well done mate. Picked up my S1H last month and as a hybrid shooter - I’ve loved it, especially as a travel camera. The image is SO clean! Need to pick me up a native lens!
Thanks very much man, that's very kind of you to say so! Glad to hear you've been loving the S1H. I was absolutely blown away by it that's for sure. And yeh, I always prefer native glass myself. For the last couple of weeks I had the 24-105 f4 and the 50 f1.4 S Pro. The 50 is unbelievably beautiful, but I predominantly used the 24-105. I couldn't believe the versatility of it. Not the fastest glass in the world at f/4 but still beautiful on a full frame system. For a first native lens I'd 100% recommend the 24-105.
You achieved having both the best vlog and the best review I've ever seen. no idea why this only has 8k views. i keep rewatching this while waiting for your next video !
dude holly shit. You're the British Peter McKinnon. That video was INSANE. The videography, the voice over, It was fire. Well done!! -Love from Hampshire
Mate banging video!!!! I’ve been toying with it. researching, eating up every S1H video on RU-vid, this is the best by a country mile!!!! I currently shoot with the Sony A7iii and am sick of waiting for the a7siii. The S1H looks like a beast man!!! Great to see some fellow countryman making great content on here aswel! Loving your work bud👍👍👍
Wow that's quite a compliment mate thanks very much!! Yep I was fed up waiting for the A7SIII aswell, it's why I decided to jump to Lumix in the end. Honestly though, if the SIII is on the way, it better be good. The S1H is seriously going to take some beating! Thanks again for your kind words man :)
Yeah I think it’s coming straight after Xmas?? I’ve got a client shoot in the alps (obviously not as dreaming Jaguars) mid Jan and really want that 4,2,2 10 bit for that shoot!! might rent an S1H for that?? Knowing my luck I’ll buy one and the a7siii will come out and blow it out the water😂😂 good to chat man this is my business www.ahpfilm.com we’re based in Brighton but travel a fair bit. If your ever up this way give us a shout?? Keep up the good work👍👍 great video!!!!
@@DreamingJaguars I think it's been 'coming' for a very, very long time now haha! It never seems to happen. Looks to me like something is going on at Sony as we've had all of the mark 3's in the Alpha line except the S, and we've even had the mark 4 of the A7R now as well. So looks like they've completely skipped the A7S mark III. In truth I can't see them blowing the S1H out of the water, but then again you never know. We will have to see. But yeh man I'd definitely recommend renting an S1H for that kind of shoot. As I've said in this vid, it's absolutely at the top of its game right now. For run and gun shooters, I honestly don't think anything else even comes close. I'd go as far as saying I think it might be the perfect camera for me personally. Thanks for the link mate, I'll check it out. And yeh for sure, if I'm ever in your neck of the woods I'll give you a shout. Thanks again man! Tommy
This needs more views! Absolutely stunning footage! I've been a GH5 user since it first was released. I now have confirmation to get the S1H as my A cam and the GH5 will be my B cam. Keep it up this was fantastic!
OMG! DEFINITELY saving my Canadian dollars to buy this beast! Amazing video. Subbed and liked! Enough commenting time to binge watch your other videos!
BTW, Although I had already planned to get this camera, this is by far the best review by example I've seen so far. I'm now 101% determined to get this camera! This video ABSOLUTELY SOLD IT!
“Panasonic, take a bow.” You, sir, should do likewise. This review alone convinced me to drop the coin on an S1H, 24-105mm f/4, and 50mm f/1.4mm. Can’t wait to up my game and learn all the S1H can do.
Wow. Just wow. So much hard work was put in that awesome video. Best review of the s1h point. I wish you the best to be able to buy it without wondering if you actually need it. Everybody NEED this piece of art. Thank you for that, dude.
Just reiterating what everybody else is saying here. Excellent video! Enjoyed every minute of it. Informative, entertaining, and inspiring! I switched from my old GH4 to Sony a few years ago (a7sii and later a7iii). I love the a7iii for stills, but the video is now lagging behind the competition. I recently picked up a black magic pocket 6k and I absolutely love the footage coming out of it. I’m keeping an eye on the S1H (especially for the upcoming prores raw update). I’m giving Sony a few more months to respond with an a7siii though. Too invested in Sony glass and I’m not too sure about the S1H photography capabilities to make the switch yet.
Thanks man! much appreciated. Yep, completely understand all that. Sony need to sort the next A7S sharpish. Interestingly though, I recently saw Panasonic asked about the compromises they had to make with stills in the S1H, compared with the others in the S series lineup. The answer.....none. Apart from maybe the addition of an OLPF, with the S1H being a cinema camera. I did take a handful of stills myself, and they looked AWESOME
Thanks Ian, very kind, glad you liked it. Drone was a P4. Glad you think it cuts in well. I was expecting a headache to match with the Lumix footage but wasn't too bad. It was certainly much easier in the moody intro shots, as it was so dull on the day there was very little colour so managed to get it to match pretty well!
Could you look at your gh5s tonight, look at the center of that magical little sensor, and repeat the words spoken from 19:02-19:32?!?! It was just painful when you mentioned depth of field at 19:18 I think. You're one cold heart man!!
@@RoweFilms i've realized that after writing a comment. Published in 2019. Just didn't want to delete comment, let it stay just as a reminder. GH6S is soon coming out, than it is ok to switch.
Just found your channel. Epic footage dude and great review. Specs are cool, but real world testing is what counts. I liked and subbed after watching this. Cheers
Forest & Ivory Films thanks dude. Not going to completely switch as such, no. But I think I may well purchase one to run alongside the G cameras. It would make an awesome A Camera. For weddings though, I still love my GH5 and GH5S as workhorses. The S1H could come out for those special shots because honestly, the footage is unbelievable. PCC is great also, especially if you work in controlled environments, but for me it would be the S1H hands down 👍🏻
@@RoweFilms Yeah price is super steep but for 6k and the V-Log that is used on the Varicam its a pretty dang good deal. I may pick one up with the 24-105 and run it has main cam for weddings. GH5 as B Cam. Tempting......
The images out of this camera look very much like an 8K Red Digital Cinema Camera. Beautiful cinematic images from a beautifully designed hybrid shooting camera.
I normally don't care about new cameras, because I'm more than happy enough with my gh5s and even my aging a6300, but wow. That color grade blew me away. Liked and Subbed - I hope you can do a tutorial on how you grade in resolve. That was amazing.
Thank you man and welcome! Yes I have some grading videos planned, they will be in FCPX as that's what I use, however the tools I use and the process will be the same. As I've just posted this video, the first one will probably be a bit of a walkthrough of my grading process for the S1H Vlog footage
@@mmolokichrystie9760 After an upload it takes a while before RU-vid has converted it to higher resolutions, so at first you can only watch it at a lower res. Looks like HD is done now!
I would just like to say one thing about Panasonic and their massive firmware updates in 2019. I respect this company and it's not a small reason why I will choose them going forward. They endowed my G9 with more features than they needed to. They didn't hold back for fear of cannibalizing other units in their range, or putting of the need for me to upgrade. The other main reason I respected them for their firmware updates was because they were willing to work with a competitor, Sigma, to help develop sigma's EF to L-mount adaptor (MC-21) so that their customers have more choice and can uses lenses from a competitor to use with their bodies. WOW. While Canon (my old cameras) are busy crippling features EOS RP, Panasonic are extending them and open-sourcing them. And for that, I'm like "where do I sign..." Picking a manufacturer can indeed be a bit like going into an unwritten contract. You buy into an ecosystem which not only includes the lens mount, but also a commitment to a particular workflow. When you buy these products, there is an OPPORTUNITY for the company to look after you. After all, BRANDING is not the company's image, it's their customer experience. The G9 is my first Panasonic experience after a decade of Canon, and I have to say, it's been exciting and rewarding. So that's something. Peace out.
As a GH5S and GH5 shooter I would wholeheartedly agree with this. In my opinion Panasonic are the best out there for that, they just keep giving to their customers even years after initial release. I think it would take a lot to sway me away from them now. And I mean a lot.
Great video, loved watching it, I’m seriously considering selling my gh5 and getting the S1, especially now it’s getting the 5.9k raw output in the next upgrade, I love the low light ability, and great ibis from a full frame sensor. I just wish I could afford the S1h.
It's superb and would be the one I'd pick to start out with. Extremely versatile focal range and probably the best value for money in the L mount range so far in my opinion
Rowe Films seriously - your footage was just outstanding... makes me seriously think about it as a video production camera - it’s just the weight is a bit off-putting as an EDC camera
Killer video and now I want do do that road trip as well. Price is coming down and the S5 looks very similar in specs (mainly). What are your thoughts today about the S1H after the S5 and A7s3?
Thanks man! You should. Hopefully heading back soon and potentially Snowdonia too so that will be fun. Personally I'd still go for the S1H. I just loved it. But I also think it's maybe not quite time to be making a decision - suspect there's more to come soon, particularly from LUMIX in the MFT format
@@RoweFilms Well, the GH6 looks to become a glorified vlogger cam based on Panasonic's last anouncement. Really sad. Also prices are just getting nuts. Feels like 3 to 4K is the new normal. Back to the video... I really like how you actually switch the mood on the music all the time. It really keeps you moving well from scene to scene. Artlist?
Pri e Jan em Dublin I wouldn’t be so sure about that man. I’ve heard that rumour but to me looks based on one ‘leak’. It would be a massive change of direction for the G Series and everything I’ve seen from them in interviews with the top boys etc suggests to me they know exactly what the GH cams are, and who they’re for. Pro shooters who don’t want everything that comes with full frame. The G100 covers the vloggers and Yamane has said they are creating a GH successor for video creators, so I’m not so sure those rumours hold much weight. One thing about Panasonic is they do listen to their users and they know who’s waiting for the GH6! Only time will tell I suppose. I use musicbed mostly mate 😊
@@RoweFilms Good point, if the GH moves down, then the G series is gone. But after the S5 going after the S1, nothing surprises me anymore. (Is the S5 colour science 100% the same as the S1H actually)?
Pri e Jan em Dublin yeh I don’t think that will happen, just wouldn’t make any logical sense to me. No the H is unique in the S lineup, colour science was developed by the VariCam guys. So it is a unique beast
Beautifully done, takes a lot to capture my attention years in the business UK, Hollywood etc Magical Mate, yep I'm very old school photography, left the business years ago Got to say very inspiring Ok here's my question, don't dance around it (I'm too old and broke) Are you sticking with the GH5 ? Is the S1H worth the extra money For filming Would you purchase it (at full price) Enjoyed your review and filming immensely Keep.at it!
Thank you mate, glad you liked it. I was going to, and then decided against. The S1H is one hell of a piece of kit and I'd say it all depends on your personal circumstances. For me, I'm already heavily invested in the m43 format and it works for me. On balance, I'm getting good enough results with the kit I have and don't feel its enough of a step up to warrant the expense of a full switch. Therefore for now at least, I'm more interested in the prospect of a GH6 landing soon. If however I was starting afresh and looking at a format to invest my money in, I would pick the S Series over the G series for sure. Hope that helps :)
This video is great! Thanks. Pulling the trigger on this beast. Question. At 5:48 I see some strange movement or wobbly movements on the rocks. Is that in the original? Is that some sort of post stabilization or something? Just curious. Grading is amazing!
@@RoweFilms Aghh good to know!! Looked good thought it was a plugin! Anyway I think you'll wind up switching! Keep up with more of these style videos man! Cheers
Thanks again! S5 I find a slightly weird one, for me anyway. It's a great entry level FF camera for sure, if its FF you want. But comparing it to the older GH5; No All-I compression, 30 minute recording limit, lower res EVF, only one of the card slots is UHS-II compatible, limited choice and comparatively expensive glass, and there's still that crop to consider at 4K60. So for me, it wouldn't make much sense
Thank you, the review is awesome. Which lens or lenses did you use to make this review? I am your new subscriber. I also like the part where you did voices"I don't need it" I am planning to buy two of the S1H cameras. Lense recommendation if there is any? Final word, have you bought the S1H yet?
Thanks very much glad you liked it. Lenses used are in description mate, difficult to recommend as I only tried two but they were both ace. Personally I'd pick up the 24-105. I haven't bought one as I'm waiting on the GH6. m43 works perfectly for me but that's not to say I wouldn't switch at some point. I'm just heavily invested in the format so for now, I'm happy
Lovely shots! 2 quick questions. Did you try using just the IBIS handheld with a lens that does NOT have IS, and would you say it is still very smooth? Also, did you find the camera's inability to do punch-in focus assist while recording a challenge in nailing your focus? I'm a Canon C100 user and use the digital punch-in for focus while I'm recording all the time, and am nervous to go without. Thanks for any feedback!
Thanks man. Yes I also had the 50 1.4 which has no IS. Still very smooth as the IBIS is brilliant. Punch in while recording would have been nice to have but I’m used to not having it as the GH5 and GH5S don’t. The focus peaking is very good and the resolution of the monitor is higher than the GH5S so I found it easy to focus, and unlike the GH cameras, didn’t at any point feel like I needed it. Panasonic are awesome with their firmware updates adding new features so perhaps that will come at a later date. Hope that helps!
I live near Drtmoor and very nice place to visit. Unfortunatly every single day the Airlines laeave trails and completly cover the whole sky. They do this to manipulate the weather.
I just ordered a Ronin S for my S1H, can you tell me more about the setup? is it a good setup? is anything to aware of or any tip? Thank you! Great work BTW
Course man. The main thing I'd say is it's a FANTASTIC setup and you're going to love it. The Ronin S is my favourite gimbal by far and combined with the S1H its killer. Not sure what else there is to say in fairness but the Ronin handles the S1H with a big fat lens absolutely fine. Easy to balance, just make sure its well balanced. I'm more used to lighter setups on the Ronin but got used to it within a few minutes of picking it up. General tips if you haven't used a Ronin before, I'd recommend spending plenty of time playing with the settings to set it up exactly how you want it. Best of luck and enjoy
For some reason I like the look of the camera better than the Blackmagic 6k. Not sure why, but this camera image has personality and the color has a more artistic feel.
@@CharlieVN Thanks. So is the full frame look good for actors faces in regular scenes, and mimicking the traditional Hollywood film look? Most examples I'm seeing are more artsy. For example, the Alexa produces images that feel like a "regular" movie, would this camera do a good job at that too? Thanks
