I've grown used to appreciate your no-frills, no technical jargon, no pixel peeping reviews. The goal is to take good photos and I learn a lot from your videos ! Merci Julia. Pierre de Québec, Canada
That hand held IBIS video is INCREDIBLE. I could not believe that was an 85mm lens. Easily the best IBIS in the industry right now. If only they had come out with this camera before I bought into Sony to get the autofocus.
@@77drismost comparisons out right now show the S5 ii having better ibis than Canon, Sony, and Fuji cameras as long as the lens is a focal length of 20mm+. The wobble is more significant when using wider focal lengths but still appears to be better than Canon (at least within the $2000-$2500 price range). We need more comparisons with this camera up against the A7IV, XH2S, and R6 ii to come to a better conclusion though.
Fantastic review. I see lots of other reviews releasing video of this camera but I have to say your videos are always the most informative and fun to watch. Great job Julia, best wishes for 2023.
Thank you Pav!! It was so nice meeting you and getting to shoot side by side. Can't wait to watch your video now since the launch was at 2am for me haha
5:40 You can turn on 'Constant Preview' to ON in the 'Monitor / Display (Photo)' settings and it will show you the exact exposure you'll be getting on your photo. Awesome review by the way!
I turned on constant preview as soon as I got the camera. This exposure preview where it shows a different exposure to what I chose only happens in manual mode. And thank you :)
@@juliatrotti I think its a hold over from the contrast autofocus. The DFD system would bump the exposure to what it thinks it should be, just before it takes the shot to boost constrast for the autofocus. Its not trying to show you what it thinks it should be, but rather trying to get the best autofocus. It shouldnt need to do this with the Phase so perhaps itll be updated and removed.
Impressive, as a Nikon user is crazy to see how far Panasonic has come along as one of the underdogs; compared to Sony and Canon even fujifilm nowadays
I agree that the exposure preview thing in photos is crazy distracting, it caused me to ruin a few shots. But it’s just a bad default, you can change it in settings. Look for Constant Preview
Thanks for watching, I enjoy your videos. I had constant preview turned on the entire time so I can see my chosen exposure but the exposure preview/flickering still happens when I half press
Excellent review! I'm seriously considering getting this camera. My only hesitation was the lens selection for the system. Seeing this video shows that the bokeh is quite pleasing when compared to other systems. F/1.4 would be nice but creamy transitions are much more preferred.
I cannot agree more. If L-mount was in competition with E-Mount it would be a no brainer. But as of now it's not even comparable the lens selection let alone prices.
Agreed, colours and tones are super nice. Sometimes I do like to increase the contrast + saturation a bit in v-log with the standard Pana rec 709 LUT, and in photo the standard picture style is really easy to work with too.
Sensational images, feature set, and excellent price/performance ratio. I’m in the market for a hybrid full frame and the S5 II is now at the top of my shortlist. Well done review - creative, well shot images / footage, high enthusiasm while not afraid to point out any weaknesses, which seem to be few. Kudos.
Those low light photos towards the end are suuuper clean! Even at a 100% crop, beaten up by RU-vid's compression, and viewed on an ultra wide monitor - the 10k and 20k ISO images are extremely usable SOOC
This was the best review and break down of the s5ii I have watched. Absolutely down well. I just purchased the camera. You answered every question I had. Thank you.
Thank you for showing the photography side of this camera. Most of the reviews only show the video strengths. This is a well done and very helpful review! Thank you!
Love love love love, that's all I have to say about the review! I just got myself a Sony A7IV along with the Sigma 24-70 f2.8, I didn't look into Lumix cameras because i didn't like that they only had contrast-based AF, if I knew about this, I'd have waited. Gosh such an amazing camera especially for the price!
Just stumbled on Julie Trotti today. This is one of the best Panasonic S5ii reviews I've watched yet. I would have liked a little more low light video footage as I'm not a photographer but other than that, well done. Liked and Subscribed.
Much appreciation for your comments on stills with the S5II. I understand how PDAF means A LOT to video shooters, but I shoot stills. Seeing it’s advantages and improvements for stills has not been given much attention by others. ✌️❤️
Nice review! This echoes about 30 other reviews of the S5 II. From what I see, as a long-time Micro 4/3 user with a lens collection, I hope they revise their GH6 and G9 soon! I WOULD BUY this S5 II if starting out, simply because it is the first camera that meets what I defined as the feature set I wanted back in 2013 when I started looking at the Lumix GH3. I had been hoping for a couple of years that we would see Canon or Nikon do it. Sony sort of did it. I love Sony AF, hate their stabilization, and their audio features are not there. Video *production* features are crippled on all three of those brands, too. For a hybrid system, Lumix gets it closest to what I want. I now hope we see an S1 Mark II, and S1R Mark II, and an S1H Mark II in the full frame lineup. The new stabilization system is killer, and PDAF is only going to get better with user feedback. They'll sell a lot of cameras with it, and not many without it.
You are the only reviewer to mention the exposure change when half pressing the shutter button, ever since using a Panasonic it's been my biggest issue !
Yes, I had it on my S5 and I found it really frustrating even with Constant Preview turned on, as Julia noted. I'm keen to learn if anyone has found a workaround because it's only thing holding me back from getting an S5ii.
You have captured some great footage of varied areas; city people, nature, indoor, day/ night which proved that Panasonic is a very professional camera. Some people thought it is only good for Video, but your stills and lut use here proves them wrong. The S5-2 exceeds the capability of my existing (and much more expensive) FF Canons and Sony's in every aspect! Excellent.
So Happy to see you with a Lumix camera :D No just kiddin' I just love to watch your work, no matter which camera you use :) Always refreshing to watch and at the same time very serious about the whole features of the camera ! I don't have many time in a day but I like to take time to watch your videos with my little boy. I learnt a lot by just watching and improved my english at the same time ;D You are very inspiring ^^ !
Might be the only reviewer I've ever seen that I agree with regarding fully-articulating vs tilt screens. I'd much rather have tilt rather than "flippy"
Julia, I’ve been watching your videos since like 2018 always amazing content I’ve learned SO much from you I really appreciate you and your channel‼️ Watching this after purchasing the S5ii I’m super excited to become a better photographer those video on the 85mm WOW and handheld Panasonic for the win
Wow, fantastic review of this camera. I am impressed by the quality. It is really exciting to see Panasonic move in this direction. They have really come a long way.
Well, officially the S5 is now the best value FF camera on the market, as in all the other departments it is ahead of the competition at this price range and in some ways by a long shot...
Great review! I'd love to see you do IQ and AF comparison on this camera with latest Sony A7 series cameras. I always prefer IQ coming from Panasonic than Sony on video side, simply because Sony did a bad job on highlight roll off even for their latest A7 series cameras. The one thing that stopped me from buying Panasonic cameras is the unusable AF on video side. Now, it seems like I should re-consider them! Happy for that!
@@juliatrotti Ooo, looking forward to seeing that comparison. I started with Lumix cameras and was holding my breath to get phase detect but after a few years of waiting I got the Sony A7IV. Now I'm happy for Lumix but a little sad they took so long to release this new tech as I'm pretty invested in Sony at the moment.
This camera is incredible for $2k. Probably the best bang for the buck ever, beating out the Sony a7 III when that was released for the same price. The real time LUTs for photo and video is amazing and so is the stabilization. The lenses are fantastic too. Im a huge Canon and Sony fan/user, but this will be my next camera when I get a FF again. Thanks
This camera was already an incredible deal at $2k but now it's on sale for the holidays here in the US for $1,697! Better yet, you can create a bundle with several lenses and save even more. I got the 50 1.8 for an extra $47 which is nothing. So the S5II and the 50 for $1,747 is an absolute steal. Best bang for the buck by far.
Fantastic review. I’m really impressed by this camera. Probably it’s better than Sony a7iv but I’m not switching. The main reason I am stick with Sony camera system is the 3. party quality lenses. There’s so much options on Sony system. I’m using Samyang lenses and I’m really happy with the performance. But I really loved this S5II. Handheld video stabilization is incredible for a full frame camera. Thanks for great review 👏🏼🙏🏼
Definitely still some weird wobbles with stabilization, but it's impressive still. I don't understand how in-camera LUTS are not a thing across the board on all these "hybrid" cameras. It's ridiculous to me that Sony doesn't have in-camera LUTS....since they have picture profiles....just let us load our own.
Yeah one thing I wasn't expecting is how great the low light performance is. I'm actually really impressed haha. Can't wait to get my hands on the RAWs to take a better look too!
yo Julia. great review. THEY FINALLY DID IT!!!! and the X version should be even more interesting. keep my gh5 but get this now TOO. best, Marty Sender You Tube
In M mode, even with Constant Preview ON, the exposure preview can be varible in order to acquire focus. Very distractive. I believe you find it annoying too since you always shoot in M mode. Hope you've already sent your feedback to Panny. Other than that, great camera.
Great video! Very impressive camera. The idea of making own presets in the camera is very nice! I would be interested in a preset if yours for perfect skin tones out of the camera! I always struggled a little with the old S5. Thanks for your great work!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video. I absolutely love real time LUTs! I've been away in Antarctica so I haven't finished with my set of LUTs yet, but now that I am back I will continue working on them :)
I'm so close to buying this camera, but as a priority stills photo tool, the swivel screen is a bit of a put off. They should have made the S5 mkii with a tilt screen and the X with the flippy. Great review though, thank you.
Great job on the video I really enjoyed it. I am a videographer and I love this camera as I have the S1H and wish I had good autofocus. I can't wait to see what they do with the S1H mark 2 with this new technology.
@@juliatrotti I KNOW RIGHT !! I am also a video editor as well, so if you ever need help just want to collaborate on something, let me know. Take care Julia Trotti.
Hi! Amazing video! I’m looking for a good camera for video, so what do you think about the lumix s5iix and the Fujifilm xh2s? Which for you is better for video? Thanks
how do you like the skintone from s5ii compare to old generation like s1h,s5? i heard s5ii has too much magenta on skintone and colors are bit too saturated sometimes.
Thanks for the review. This looks really good. Might finally be getting time to switch from Sony. Will have to check on prices and lenses firat of course
For portraits where eye autofocus is critical, is the autofocus good enough where you would recommend people buying this camera, or would you recommend a Sony camera?
The X out of 20 photos with critical focus test I did was with close up/headshot style portraits. I will be uploading some portrait photoshoots with this camera soon though where we can take a better look at that!
