I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks. After years of thinking using an App to control my camera was a bit too '21st century' for me, I have finally embraced the Lumix Sync App and paired it with my Panasonic Lumix G9. If you have been on the fence about using this app, this video shows you what it can do and just how easy it is.
If you find you are getting real value from watching my videos, you can thank me with a coffee: www.buymeacoffee.com/andrewgo...

Andrew, you are the man! Thanks so much for sharing this. The old app was a disaster. And thanks for sharing about doing the initial setup away from your home wifi!

Thank you for the instruction and urging to tackle this app. I was able to accomplish it on my G9 but not my wife’s camera. I had to delete the previous app and download it again before it would work as you suggested. We turned the WiFi off on my cell phone and that appears to have circumvented our home WiFi from interfering with the process. By the way my wife’s G9 froze while we were working with the download process, it would not turn off. I finally removed the battery and and reinstalled it and all was fine. She had not deleted her previously downloaded app. We will try it again. The remote worked as advertised on my G9. I am anxious to use it for the most recent firmware download, it will be much less of a hassle than using the laptop. You have repeatedly helped us to enjoy our G9 cameras. Thanks again.

A great use case with the app is to be able to control the manual focus from afar, in situations where you're the only operator and want to use manual focus for instance to film yourself. This is neat, especially with Panasonics devices.

Great explanation. I think the ‘Camera settings’ in the other section is to save your existing camera settings e.g. one set for video and another for stills and variations thereof, similar to the custom modes.

Wow, one of the most concise and to the point videos I have ever watched. Thank you very much. I like the fact you can make chganges to the settings on trhe same screen as the shutter. In previous app you had to do those on a separate screen. This really makes the app very versatile remote.

Nice demo, I too am of a certain age! I’ve been using the Image App, it’s worked for me on the rare occasions I’ve used it. I’ve successfully downloaded from camera to phone, it’s simple and straightforward. Not quite the same, but if I’ve only a few (less than 25photos), to download from my G9, I’ll use the WiFi to my iPad, rather than via the card and that works well, I’ll often use that method on holidays too.

Thanks for plunging into this topic. Being a member of the "people of a certain age"-group I only touched the app once and setting it up (at home...) was so cumbersome and unreliable I immediately uninstalled the app from both memories - phone and personal. You reawoke my interest, especially regarding the remote shutter function. For astrophotography, which I just recently started to stick my head into, it would be marvelous for the app to combine the remote shutter release function with an intervalometer function allowing for more than 60 seconds exposures in blub mode. I know the easy fallback is to get one of them cheap hardware intervalometers, but hey, if there is an app why not use that 🙂 Thanks for sharing your approach - btw, love the humor of yours 😊👍🙂

Thanks for the video. I previously had the Panasonic Image App on my iPhone for my GH5, but I finally figured out that I needed to install the newer Lumix Synch App for my S5. BTW, the explanation in the full S5 Owners Manual on line is much better than the S5 Basic Owners Manual. Anyway, I was surprised how smoothly the installation went after I read the section in the full manual. I was able to easily install the S5 firmware update and use all the function that you mention in your above video. Also, apparently, GPS location logging is automatic as long as the app is running, the camera is connected to the app, and Bluetooth and the location logging function are turned on in the S5 menu. A GPS indicator shows up at the top of the S5 viewfinder. Looking forward to testing the app's functions more extensively.

Thanks Andrew, still here, a year after your video, its a great help! I found out what has confused me, is the term wifi: I didn't know if it was going via my home wlan (no good in the field!) or a direct connection to the camera. But I found out that if I start the setup on the camera (and not on the phone), choose wifi > function in the menu (as you do), it actually starts to a local wifi connection directly to the phone. Then connect the phone manualy to the G9 network and it works after a couple of minuts. Maybe the phone finds a stronger network under the proces and disconnects from the G9 network. But connecting manually again helps. I hope others find this useful too:-)

Thanks Andrew as always. I did purchase a remote cable for my G9 but think the app will be better to use. Will be doing some wildlife photography in a couple weeks and will give it a try. Be interesting to see how far you can be away from the camera and it still work.

I use the app predominantly in low light and when I'm too lazy to walk to where the camera is set up. Probably that needs some explaining, I travel to Germany on a regular basis. There in the woods you can find what they call, translated from german, high seats. Where you can set yourself down to look at deer and pigs and other wildlife. Basically you set up your camera at ground level and you yourself are in high and dry. The app lets you see when those critters walk past. It is really useful. But I guess you will find out how easy it is to use. Even use it on the old TZ-80, slightly different app usefull non the less.

You /can/ connect direct to phone at home but you have to set up wifi /on the camera/ for 'direct to phone'. If you use the preferred bluetooth set up it will try to connect via your home LAN. An iPad might be a better choice as its screen is so much bigger. Use of the home LAN is because when on the direct wifi connection you have lost the interweb and some applications want that such as astrophotography where the telescope looks like something from NASA. The Lumix Tether App will work to Laptop/Desktop using the supplied special usb cable (and extension). Using wifi is far more stable than bluetooth but you can use that as a remote shutter without dropping the interweb (which is of no interest out in the wilds). The phone should maintain GPS location without the internet. Wifi does have a greater range, remains locked on, and provides full control. Do remember to turn the camera wifi and bluetooth off, it eats the battery. To capture lightning I'd probably go with the pre-burst.

Hey Jeff. When you choose direct to phone on your camera, does it save this information for the next time you connect or do you have to choose direct to phone every time? Thanks!

That is so great Andrew, to learn that you must be away from your own Wi-Fi. But the most important thing for me would be how to get location data EVERY shot and clock synch with iPhone on. It’s like this takes forever to establish. My watch is connected to my iPhone all the time, but not so with the camera. Have you found a solution to this?? Thanks for great videos!

Thank you for this useful information! One thing remained unclear for me: I usually focus with "Backbutton Focus". So the shutter button does not focus the lens. How did you solve this? Exceptionally focus with the shutter button, so Backbutton Focus temporarily switched off? Or did you always focus with the AF button and then trigger with the app? In that case, however, it is only useful for static subjects. Thanks in advance for an answer, and best regards to down under from Walter!

The reason I didn't mention focus in the video is because that is the one aspect I haven't figured out yet. Remember I never claim to be an expert, just sharing what I have learned. For all my remote shooting I have focused first using the button on the camera, before shooting with the app.

I have my G9 updated to 2.4 dfirmware but can't seem to get it to work with the Sync App with any kind of reliability. On the screen of the camera it wants me to use the Lumix Image App but I have read in other places that the firmware update should change the default from the Image App to the Sync App is there something else I need to do to get this to work?
@naturesimagephotography
@naturesimagephotography 2 года назад
Sorry Dustin I haven't ever used the other app and I haven't had any problems like that...so obviously haven't had to go looking for a solution. Is it possible that the camera can detect both apps on your phone and that is confusing the default? Maybe you need to uninstall the Image App. But really I don't know. There is a very good forum on Facebook where people seem to be happy to help with answers to G9 problems, you could try asking the question there: facebook.com/groups/PanasonicG9

That's a question for cleverer videographers than me. It doesn't sound right as the apps are specifically for controlling the camera functions.

Can I ask why you chose to use the sync app rather than the image app. Have you tried the image app? I know that the sync app works with the G9, but unless it has changed, I think that not all functionality works with sync that some of the full frame cameras do. I also have the G90 as well as the G9 so it suits me best to use the Panasonic image app, which works for both. I think the app is great btw. 🙂

Honestly...I googled 'phone app remote for Lumix G9' and that's what came up. I had already downloaded it before I knew the other one existed. It also works on the S1 which I am using for a while so I guess my setup suits me as well as your setup suits you.

Compared to LUMIX Synch, Image app is soooo difficult to use and work with. LUMIX Synch is straight forward and if gps location data would be established within seconds, I would be really happy.

I have used the Panasonic Image app for years for long shutter night sky photography, first with a G85 and now a G9. It works well but is a little cumbersome to get set up each time. I downloaded the sync app and will give a try next time the skies clear (I’m in the Seattle, Washington area so it might be awhile!) to see how it compares. Cheers - jeff

I had the image app and every time I went to use it it would pop up a notification that I should be using the Lumix Sync app instead to take advantage of all the functions of the G9. I have seen other comments from users saying that Lumix Sync is only for S series cameras, but it works really well with my G9.

Must you also sync with wifi?
@naturesimagephotography
@naturesimagephotography 2 года назад
The wifi sync is for the full remote control feature. It uses bluetooth for the basic press-and-shoot function. But you don't need to be near a wifi source to be able to use it, the camera and phone seem to be able to create their own connection. This was a surprise to me when I first saw it in action.

The Panasonic app is Ok. But the Field Monitor app (which uses the same wireless technology) offers so much more. Scopes, false color, focus peaking, zoom control for focusing and more on your phone in real time. You’ll never use the Panasonic app again.

Unless phone has 4k camera sync will not load onto your phone ......WiFi battery drainage is significant ....faster and easier is a card reader attached to phone photo and video upload is V fast ...again 4k cannot upload 0nto your phone unless phone has 4 k....
