Lunch with a Stranger: Korean Hospitality

We just wanted to share a neat experience that we had on our way to church this morning. The Korean people have been so friendly, so gracious, and so hospitable since day one. This is just one example of the kindness that we have been shown!
We were looking a little lost after missing church, and a sweet korean lady didn’t waste any time in coming to our rescue, despite the fact that we barely know any korean yet.
Korean hospitality transcends the language barrier! It doesn’t hurt that everyone is crazy about the kids, too.

What you experienced is something called 정. There isn’t a single word to define it, but it encompasses unconditional compassion, sympathy, goodwill toward others and living in harmony with each other. Most often you will see 정 expressed by older people, who try to dote on you and take care of you. A classic expression of 정 is when somebody takes food from their plate and puts it on yours. When a group of (unrelated) Korean families hang out for a picnic or get-together, it’s not uncommon to see a dad or mom unsolicitedly put food on the plates of somebody else’s kids (often to the point of being pushy about it and saying that you better eat all of it)

Ha ha 'Azumma' cares much of everything They are lovely and very appreciated 😊 They are even into things some might think its totally non of your business but once they sense that someone needs help, they are right there helping for good reasons without asking of any pay. Which I appreciate so much. It's so nice your family experience what a real korea is like

Haha, I'm glad you met one of the nicer old ladies. They can be on both ends of the spectrum as at a certain age, they think "screw being PC" and either become as nice or as weird as they want.

Awww I am glad that you got to experience the Korean hospitality although it could have been confusing at first. Your family is really openminded :) What church do you all go to?I think finding a church in a new place is really important and kinda hard at the same time. Hope u found a good one!

Glad you took it well and all enjoyed your time together. I personally would find that kind of approach not an everyday occurrence, especially towards fellow Korean people, as most likely they wouldn't think that the other party (if it was a Korean family) need help per se, or it might be welcome. Don't get me wrong, Koreans just more easily tender a helping hand to non-Koreans, and even more so to Caucasian, because whites are highly regarded in their minds. Just mentioning it for your awareness.

Holding a baby.. yeah i know it could be seen a bit rude in America.. but it's just smh common here in S.korea especially for elders (in a way of hospitality). But just one thing.. if you sense sth strange, just ignore it. Now It's quite different from the old days.. Plus one more thing.. i dunno how long have you guys been here but I know foreingers frequently get offensed cause of rude ajummas.. yourger generation here also don't like that as much as foreigners do, but we don't take it that seriously cause we have been very accustomed with it. So just.. if you feel offensed just ignore it the elders in s.korea are not 'fundametally' rude, but rather it's more like.. that was just the way they coped their lives with the harsh world in old days

I'm just too worried that if you would get a negative feeling about korea in later days. I read a lot of foreigners' comments here on youtube about their korea lives, and I see bunch of them getting offensed from some typical cultural things. It could sound really weird but i just recommend not read the youtube comments cause s.koreans nowadays get super offensive online. sad..

But aside of that, i know there are whole bunch of good sides of S.korea. enjoy your time!

Thank you for the advice. We don’t get easily bothered. Older people in the States can sometimes be a little cantankerous, too. There are difficult people everywhere in the world, but so far our experience in Korea has been very positive. Everyone has been so kind and the older people are so sweet toward the kids. Both of our kids absolutely love the attention.
