USA Gear Spartan Locker installed on a front axle. Awesome for Dirt, Rock, Snow and Mud!
LOCKER I used: amzn.to/2wqgon2
PAINT PENS: amzn.to/2K2ndgq
Loctite Blue Stick: amzn.to/2rsCFLg
Loctite Red Stick: amzn.to/2K4zrF9
USA MADE roll pin punch set: amzn.to/2InjxIV
RTV Sealant Mini Tubes: amzn.to/2FTZ4Gm
USA MADE Lucas Gear Oil: amzn.to/2K4qHPv
Spartan Locker, Aussie Locker, Detroit EZ Locker, Lockright Locker and others all function basically the same way. This Spartan Locker fit easily into my High Pinion Dana 44 in my 1978 Ford F150 and functioned flawlessly for 2 days in Moab Slickrock. Poison Spider trail and Hells Revenge were no issue as well as the 500mile round trip drive at speeds upwards of 85mph. I chose the front axle as I have lockable hubs and can unlock it manually for street driving. I don't think I would install one in the rear of a street vehicle.

One of the best locker install videos I have seen. And since I did this long ago to a couple vehicles..and one about a yr. a half ago, wish I had seen the video before then ;) but I got through it, and it helped I've had a lot of experience with large hydraulic motors/pumps through a early work experience. But it's really not that bad of a job, just watch your measurements and clearances, and take your time.

Installed a spartan locker in my 30 spline Dana 60 rear. Did not have to pull out the carrier, installation went very slick. Road manners aren’t bad at all. With the windows down and stereo off you can here a slight clicking going around corners off the gas. If you stay on the gas it stays locked. Works great as expected off-road.

Thanks, I have wondered about those. I even wondered about using them front and back. No rock crawling for me but in snow and mud it could nice. Even more so plowing with a 2 bottom plow. Never new there was something other than OXE OR ARB. SIMPLE IS NICE.
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 6 лет назад
For less than 1/4 the price of an OX or ARB locker it can't be beat. In the rear axle of a daily driver it would be annoying as it clicks as you turn a corner on concrete, unlike an Ox or ARB which can be unlocked. For a front end with hubs; since you can unlock the front ,you'll never notice as you turn on the concrete and daily drive it.

ZippoVarga sounds like you need to move to Arizona. 360° of mountains and anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour away from many many mountains to go on and many more if you wanna travel farther all over the state. Also Arizona has a website that lets you know most of the trails in every county so its easy to find new spots in different places all over az. Mud? We get mud couple months out of the year

@sixtyfiveford

True, I think it also comes down to how much you use it. Being in the front axle and really only used for rock crawling it'll take me 30years to wear it out.

@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 6 лет назад
It makes a huge difference in grip. I can't wait to see how well it does in winter as it did great in soft sand and on rock this past weekend. I debated installing this in the 9" rear of this truck but opted to start with the front and see how I liked it. For an axle that is always engaged it will ping/knock as it ratchets when you go around a corner on cement. It does change the mannerisms of driving a little but a lot of guys do it (Justin Raines in the comments below runs one in his Jeep rear). The 9" Ford actually uses fewer parts than I show, but I couldn't find anyone online that has a testimonial for it.

@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 6 лет назад
I bought some in the past at nearly $8 a pen but those ran out so I started searching online for a cheaper option. I saw Sharpie made some and gave them a try. They need a really good shaking the first time you use them or else it can be watery and point the tip up when you depress it for the first time to let out any built up gases. Otherwise it'll expel a blob of paint like they all do. I was surprised how long the first Yellow one has lasted me and am on to the Red and White now.

@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 3 года назад
On soft dirt or rock it will Just slip the rubber to the ground. On solid pavement there's enough traction between the two tires that you'll get a pretty good bang when it skips a tooth. Even then it'll try to skid the tire/chirp the tire on the pavement. There's tons of guys that run them in the rears of their Jeep and claim they get 30,000 mi out of them.

If you have a locker like this is the front and your 4 wheel drive isn't engaged. Does it still hop when turning like a locker in the back
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 6 лет назад
Since I have locking hubs on the wheels the front axle is completely idle in 2wd. If I didn't have unlockable hubs, like a lot of newer vehicles it would make a tick/popping sound as it ratcheted going around a turn. The wheels wouldn't hop.

@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 4 года назад
I haven't yet. It's done so well with just the front locker I put that project on the back burner. My only issue, that was an issue before the front locker was the already weak power steering system in my truck. I can't steer on pavement with the front locker engaged so I need to do the common upgraded power steering pump. Dirt, snow, slick rock aren't an issue. I'm running a 9" in the rear and a little concerned about the street drivability with a locker in the rear. I'm on the fence about a lunchbox or dis/engagable locker.

How long is a lunch box locker expected to last with minimal off road use? Like... Half a dozen off road trips a year with possible locking use?
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 4 года назад
If you have unlockable hubs it will last the life of the axle as it's never being used. If you throw it into the rear end of your daily driver you should only expect 20-30,000miiles.

I'm not sure the differences 50vs 44 off the top of my head. This style locker didn't need with any factory backlash. However even if it did I likely wouldn't have messed with it being a front axle. Why? Because a front axle with unlockable hubs will maybe see 50-100 miles total over it's life.

XJ, I had a 1986 Cherokee for years. It had the Chevy 2.8l, which was gutless. I always wished I could drive one with the 4.0l. For a fixed axle with no locking hubs the front end will always be locked, even in 2wd. When you go around turns this will make the front end ping/knock as the gears ratchet. Not a bad thing on dry pavement, just a little annoying. On wet/icy surface in 2wd it can force the front end to want to go straight when you try to turn. There are a lot of people in XJs that run them though.
@hachi-rokuperformancegroup3987

Only if you can unlock the hubs. I have mine welded, with manual locking hubs it is a PITA when you have enough snow to want 4WD, but patches of dry pavement. Also my truck is mostly for offroad and occasionally when the snow is too deep for a AWD car. And then is is awesome. I think my diff is busted though and am thinking of the Spartan, or I will weld again or get a spool.

The Electronic Locker is a nice option and I know a lot of guys who use them. It's not as strong as an Air Locker but is a lot simpler to install(no air lines/compressor). The inconvenience of adding the compressor is nice though as having onboard air is always a benefit.

@scoutdogfsr
@scoutdogfsr 3 года назад
Its as easy as the vid shows. Your independent front end is definitely more labor intensive than a straight axel though. No need to pull the diff like he shows in the video. If you have the GM Gov lok rear diff these drop in lockers will not work

eaglecot I was curious about this as well. I'd love to install something similar in the front of my chevy 4x4.
@JeffsFreedomGarage
@JeffsFreedomGarage 6 лет назад
@eaglecot - That all depends on how hard you use them and how often you change your gear oil. Say you go off-road occasionally, (twice a month), and you don't red line your engine while spinning the tires all the way up hills and you don't jerk the steering wheel left and right under full load. You just play around, but nothing crazy. As long as you change your gear oil between 12,000 to 24,000 miles or once a year/once every two years. You should get 100,000 miles out of them. Now if you go crazy and go rock-hill/rock-bouncing/hill climb racing, you'd be lucky to keep the lockers in good working order before the one year warranty runs out.
@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 6 лет назад
With an axle that has locking hubs it is completely idle when not in 4 wheel drive. So it would last indefinitely on road. For a daily driver without locking hubs where it always spins I would agree with Jeff at 100k (occasional offroad).
@Goomer

Not necessarily. It's just makes 4wd work astonishingly better almost like limited slip they put into rear ends of cars/trucks. A lot of stock SUVs and Trucks have something similar to these as a factory option. If someone lived on a farm or in extremely icy snowy area it would help out a lot.

@sixtyfiveford
@sixtyfiveford 5 лет назад
@@garysisk3431 It really only engages under hard acceleration. So in the rear you would feel it ratcheting while making a "fast" right/left hand turn. You wouldn't notice anything while going slow while turning and definitely nothing while going straight down the highway. The more it ratchets the faster it wears out and others have said it only lasted 15-20k miles in the rear for a street driven vehicle. But for the price and simplicity it can't be beat and when it does go out it is just a stock open differential. I can unlock the front hubs on this truck so my front axle never spins while I'm on the road. So it will last indefinitely on my front axle.

to do the gear swap with diff in the axle? if can get the center pin out/in without having to grind the ring gear that is in the way... too much, per Petersons 4 Wheel and OFF road magazine article. if ring gear it TOTALLY too thick then the ring gear has to come off/out much more work to slide axles out of knuckles... at which point might as well get the axle tube seals off e bay $20 from CN to seal the axle tubes from mud/dirt. make special half moon thing on all thread to get the trash out of axle tubes so that trash doesnt get pushed into differential/seal and the old seal leaks gear oil into the axle tube. not the end of the world... if have the axle tube end seals from CN/HK in 3 weeks for $20 so the oil is kept in the axle tubes and not leaking all over the inside of the tires. as replacing the inside differential axle seals looks like a chore without another set of hands to keep broom handle/extensions in just the right place hammering in the new axle/differential seal that keeps the gear oil in the differential. STP OIL TREATMENT? to THICKEN UP THE gear oil so it wont leak out so much? 60 WT... liquid grease really thickens up oils, motor and gear oil.
