To try to get at least slightly better gas mileage, I'm changing the gear ratio of the Dana 44 during my Dodge W100 Power Wagon restoration. Turns out that it's not as simple as swapping the ring and pinion.

The drill bit roll pin extractor was a great idea. It is totaly worth having "check" side bearings and in some cases a check pinion bearing. You can buy them, 75.00, or take a small flapper drum and make your own. Especially with most Dana axles having the shims on the inside of the bearings.
I bought a setup race for an inner pinion bearing on a Dana 30 a while back, and I think they forgot to machine the outside of the race so it would slip in and out. I had to pound it in and out, just like the actual race. I can seeing buying or making them if you're doing the work very much, but probably not worth it for a differential that you'll probably never do again.
3.73 i think is what your talkin about. i just swapped to open diff rear dana 44 from posi. those friction plates in mine were breaking and you need a open diff carrier to put a locker in so i figured it was a good cheap swap. got it cheap from the bone yard
Man, whoever pointed that ratio out to you sure is swell. Too bad he didn't tell you about the possible carrier break issue before you assembled it with the old carrier.
Are there also two differently spaced carriers for the Dana 30/35? I'm asking because I want to change my Jeep WJ's stock ratio from 3:73 to 3:55 for better mileage on my daily driver.
