Good informative review, you can fix the treble on the DT990 by replacing the damping material over the driver with 3mm wool felt.
@GIChow
@GIChow 3 года назад
Thanks, you know funnily I was thinking of doing something like that the other day (did a similar tissue paper mod with Superlux 668B) tho their recessed mids means I now see their treble detail as their special thing..like a technical 'feature' rather than something to enjoy music with :-)

@@GIChow If you want to try a great ultra cheap headphone that sounds great try superlux HD 681 or monoprice retro with brainwavz XL hybrid pads, huge bass not out of control though and nice balanced sound with 3mm felt mod i build them for friends that want a good sound on the cheap. Best budget headphone ever trust me.

I have just bought the Shure Aonic 50, after making the mistake of buying the Bowers & Wilkins PX7 Carbon Edition, which sounded like a bloated bass monster. So I am hoping the Aonic 50's don't have too much base. One big change is the firmware, which now allows for the EQ to be put onto the headphones, instead of just playing through the app. So this should help with the bass issue (probably not an issue for my taste).
@GIChow
@GIChow Год назад
Didn't know about that update but sounds like a useful one. I found without EQ the Aonic 50 a touch bass shy for my personal taste (much less bassy than the srh840) so it may be right up your street if you get on with the weight and headband shape.

Thanks! A spacious sounding headphone with good vocal clarity and deep bass response and good bass impact. Maybe start with the cheap Monoprice Retro (closed back but still spacious sounding, with some cheap more comfortable velour pads) and you may never need anything more.

Which one should i buy for mixing? Thank you
@GIChow
@GIChow 3 года назад
Hi, while you could mix with any of these (would use Shure wired to avoid Bluetooth latency) if you are DJ mixing in a club / noisy environment then I probably wouldn't really recommend any of these since you'll need a closed back and hard wearing design and there are cheaper options e.g. HD25. Btw an upcoming video is on pro audio company (AKG, Audio Technica, Beyer) Bluetooth headphones, all closed back and fairly flat v consumer tuning.

What would you choose among aionic 50 and drop panda ? I’m searching for audiophile Bluetooth headphones. I don’t care about ANC or weight or additional options. I want loud clear and living room sound. Not as bassy as sony xm4 . I heard drop’s sound is amazing but not so loud . Is that true? Please guide me to find good pair of headphones.
@GIChow
@GIChow 2 года назад
Good question. I've not heard the Drop Panda. Most people including several reviewers I respect rate them tho the Headphone Show / Crinacle didn't for both accuracy of tonality and technical performance. For me the Shure had good detail but insufficient bass (without significant EQ) to be satisfying..much less than the SRH840 that I really liked (but that I also found uncomfortable due to the weight being concentrated at the top of my head). Best overall sound quality for my tastes so far is the AKG K371BT..not *too* bassy or too lean and great value too.

@@GIChow in case of AKG it only supports AAC and SBC is it going to be problem to listen to high res files such as lossless or FLAC or 3D surrounding sound designed for headphones?

I don't use Flac files or 3d audio myself (mainly just stream highest quality from Spotify). From my experience these (and LDAC) are largely gimmicks and play a fairly small part in the experience of music.

Can the Shure 50 sound closer to hifiman headphones? Can I consider shure as an Audiophile? Because hifiman is not that convenient to carry around.
@GIChow
@GIChow 2 года назад
Hifiman typically has a planar driver for impactful bass response. The Shure Aonic 50 bass is not comparable but it has good clarity on a par with some 'audiophile' headphones.
@kamesh_98
@kamesh_98 2 года назад
@@GIChow sure hifiman has good base. But hate to assemble the rig each time (tying up the amp behind the phone). Planning to buy Shure, i doesn't want to be disappointed with my key expectations like details and sound stage.

Strange to compare closed-back, Bluetooth headphones against open-backed, wired headphones. They're not really competing products, so I'm not sure what useful info we can really learn about the specific quality of the Shure product, relative to others in the product segment.
@GIChow
@GIChow 3 года назад
Good point, the comparison is to describe their sound relative to well known and established audiophile and professional sound quality 'references' that I and others know and may even own. Btw a later video compares wireless over-ear (circumaural) closed backs from established pro audio companies ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aYxv2ZVDcRY.html

In terms of clarity and detail of the sound, how much better are the HD600s than the Aonic's?
@GIChow
@GIChow 2 года назад
Interesting question - the Shure has a slightly deeper, faster and more impactful bass and the highs have a very precise crystalline and at first listen detailed quality about them but over time you realise that the HD600 is just more realistic sounding (from upper bass upwards at least) - it really can be spookily true to life with voices especially like someone is actually there with you. So in summary I'd say one isn't comprehensively better than the other but each presents different aspects of music better than the other. For me personally the comfort of the Shure (like their great sounding SRH840) was the bigger factor since I couldn't wear them for more than 30 minutes without discomfort at the top of my head from the weight (the HD600 is very comfortable for me, though one is tethered to a cable).
@dudefromcbee
@dudefromcbee 2 года назад
How would you rate the Shure against Sony XM4 and Bose N700?
@GIChow
@GIChow 2 года назад
The XM4 was more comfortable for my head and has a warmer and slightly less detailed and analytical sound. Not owned the N700 but from a brief audition it seemed more focused on beautifully clear vocals at the slight expense of bass extension/impact and treble extension.
@dudefromcbee
@dudefromcbee 2 года назад
@@GIChow Thanks Bro! I'm literally confused between Shure AONIC 50 Vs Sony XM4 Vs Bose N700... I'll be using it for music, RU-vid and importantly for my office calls... Any thoughts/suggestions /alternatives? Mixed feelings towards Sony's overall sound signature....
@GIChow
@GIChow 2 года назад
@@dudefromcbee Personally unless you need ANC I'd go for an AKG K371-BT for more accurate enjoyable (not super analytical) sound and similar comfort at a fraction of the price. Otherwise with the level of sound offered by all 3 I'd just go for the one you find most comfortable. The sound quality differences aren't huge enough to affect enjoyment of most music for most people.
@dudefromcbee

@@GIChow Makes sense. Guess the mic/call capabilities is where Sony falls short of Bose. How is the Shure's mic for calls?
@GIChow
@GIChow 2 года назад
@@dudefromcbee I never really used the Shure long enough for calls since the comfort was the downside for me but all the mics on the headphones I've tried were fine for me (think I recorded the Shure in one of the videos or others will have them).

Have you tried the DT 990 and the HD 600 on a tube amp they sound awesome, also use a high impedance amplifier
@GIChow
@GIChow 3 года назад
I have the Bravo Ocean hybrid and have tube rolled a bit tho to be honest found that changed the sound to some extent tho didn't change their fundamental character. HD600 never has sub bass and DT 990 never has enough mids presence. Though both sound great in their own ways..certain music can flatter one or the other.
@chefsteve8381
@chefsteve8381 3 года назад
@@GIChow you need a OTL amp like little dot mk2 or darkvoice, as it has a high impedance that changes the sound with a thicker richer sound.

@GIChow
@GIChow 3 года назад
There is an interesting article on impedance matching at www.headphonesty.com/2019/04/headphone-impedance-demystified/ My take in a nutshell is that a high impedance amp (OTL or otherwise) will only properly (i.e. without distortion or inadequate volume) drive a high impedance headphone however I'm not aware of a problem with distortion the other way round. My Bravo Ocean drives my hd600 to ear splitting volume half way round the dial so unless it is for some reason attenuating specifically lower frequencies or boosting higher then as far as I'm aware it is being driven adequately..yes different tubes change the sound e.g. tubey / 'warm' even order harmonics but afaik won't change the basic frequency response.
@GIChow
@GIChow 3 года назад
Btw the reason that low bass frequency response matters to me is that some rhythms e.g. in EDM like Chemical Brothers tracks are almost completely lost on the hd600 so one has to rely on one's memory of the track rather than actually hearing it. In short some of the message/communication of some music is lost.
