Very insightful, thank you for this review! Question: I see you have the Universal Audio Twin X on your desk, is the Twin X not enough to push the DT1990? Hi Sanjay I have a doubt mate. I have the Neumanns but despite having a good interface which should drive them decently enough (the Arturia Audiofuse Studio)... despite they dont really sound quiet neither they sound loud at all even with the gain at the very top on the Arturia Do you think I could benefit for that headphone amplifier that you recommend or given my equipment really that would not make any difference? Thanks very much :)

Hey Sanjay, I have a question I am hoping you can answer. I recently bought the 770 Pro 250 ohms and I have a KA6 audio interface. The volume wasn't loud enough for me with this setup, so I bought a PreSonus HP4 amplifier, which sorted the volume issue out, but now I have lost the feature of direct monitoring (without latency) that the KA6 provides when recording through a mic into Ableton. What do you think is the solution for this? Is there an audio interface I can switch to that gives me both the amplifying + the direct monitoring feature in one piece of gear?

Hi Sanjay, I am getting a very faint slight humming sound on my studio speakers. Is that normal for all speakers? I tried two different models of desktop speakers (both made by Bose), with different audio cables, and even different electrical outlets. Each of the two brands have a different type of, but faint, humming/static noise when they are simply turned on, even at zero volume, and even when not connected to my computer.

Sanjay, I would appreciate your advice. I have Shure SRH940's, I like them but the plastic part that goes up into the headband breaks every year. I send them back to Shure with $100 and I get a new pair that breaks because of the poor design. I've talked to them but they don't care. I play guitar and listen through the headphones so they are not abused in any way. I want headphones that won't break every year, are comfortable, the Shure are comfortable, closedback design, with a kickass sound. It's down to the Beyerdynamic and the Neumann. What would you really recommend? Thanks

Hello Sanjay. I am just getting into recording. I have Logic, MacBook Pro, Focusrite 4i4. I also use a AX8 Fractal for guitar modeling. I do not have studio monitors yet but will get as I am slowing adding peripherals step by step. I don't want to buy 2 headphones one for mixing vs recording (open back vs closed back headphones as I understand). Price range 100-400 possibly more. I played studio monitors Yamaha HS8 which sounded great. I am thinking doing recording without bothering neighbors at night at first. Someone suggested Blue MoFi which someone suggested? What would you recommend for me? The one you recommended at end of YT clip seems to be open back.

Love the Neumann NDH20s. I've had to use monitors less, especially at night and went from entry level Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro to the Neumanns. Wow. Speaking on sound only, they are pretty damn awesome. While I haven't compared them to high end headphones like Audeze LCD or Focal, I can say that give a truer representation to almost anything when used with high quality audio input. I'm running everything through my UA Apollo X8, and this combination is fantastic. Mixes sound better than before and even streaming or loading up a blu-ray sounds so much better. For the price, they're definitely worth it. There are some drawbacks for those who are looking for a more complete review. My main complaint is the headband which feels like the shape is too wide to sit snugly on top of the head. They tend to slide a bit if you nod your head forcefully (e.g. along with a good beat). And when bending over, they slide off. They fit snugly over the ears and do not pose an issue when just sitting and working. They feel pretty tight over the ear actually. All in all I love them and am looking to get the LCD-X or HEDDphone to find the best headphone mixing solution for my needs.

Would like to know if you found your best headphones for mixing Been considering getting a pair of ndh20 for a while, since I don’t own speakers for now, I might rely heavily on headphones for a while, and if there are headphones that sound as good as speakers, I’ll take it
@neonether
@neonether Год назад
@@user-mq9sy4rf1s Follow Up Mar 1, 2023: I’ve now owned the Audeze LCD-X and LCD MX-4. Both handle mixing incredibly well. The MX-4 is considerably more expensive but also sounds incredibly good and flatter than the LCD-X. With the LCD-X you get great open-back sound with a bit brighter profile compared to the MX-4. Overall, it’s a judgement call if you think the MX4 are $2000 “better”. In the end I went with the MX-4, and I don’t regret it. But I also would be able to do well with the LCD-X. Like anything, you just need to listen to everything with the headphones so you know what certain records sound like as a reference. Then you’ll be able to mix your sound closer to what sounds right to you. It’s not a replacement for a fine pair of monitors, but it will definitely serve you well for hearing a mix with more detail and less weird spots in response compared to a Neuman ndh20 or comparably priced headphone. I’ve kept the MX4 and I can mix just as well if not better than with my high end monitors (dynaudio core 47) depending on the situation.

Got mine today. The sound is punchy, thick, detailed, not brittle, mids are incredible but the band is hurting the top of my head pushing hard. I will have to think about some foam to wrap around otherwise my time limit is less than 30 minutes wearing them😢
@neonether
@neonether 11 месяцев назад
@@almur88 Unfortunately that’s usually what varies the most. For me, I can sleep in those when I need to block out ambient sound, and its the more expensive mx4s that hurt my ears after a little while. But there are now other headphones in this price range that can be tried, hopefully we don’t all have to suffer for the sound!

Sanjay, for the Shures, what is your perception of the THD in the mids and bass? I read some reviews that acknowledge these are flat cans, but have significantly more THD in those areas and therefore aren't "mixing and mastering" headphones. I have the HD650 (calibrated by sonarworks) and the HD600 and I'm just looking for another reference for a different perspective to my mixing and mastering. I thought these Shures would be the one.

As someone that wants to get a high impedence pair of headphones, how would the connections work? I have an M-Audio Air as my Audio Interface and it has a 1/4" headphone out. Would this connection need to go to a headphone amp (Magni) which then powers high impedence headphones? So I would need a 1/4" TRS to RCA to connect the headphone port of my audio interface to the headphone amp? I've been looking for a video on how specifically someone has it connected using an audio interface but I have not been able to find one. I hope someone can help

I actually haven't compared the 1990 to 1770, but I suspect they are very close in sound (since the 770 and 990 are very similar). The biggest difference will be the wider soundstage on the 1990 since its open-back.

I'm currently running then from Scarlett 2i2 and Audient EVO 4 and I don't feel the need to increase volume beyond 50 percent on both. So I don't have issue with volume. Great video dude, do you think that byerdynamics 1990 pro would be better solely for mixing and nothing else because I was thinking of Neumann NDH20 for a while because they were on discount but do you think I should spend more and get 1990 pro for a little better mix than NDH20 or not?
@SanjayC
@SanjayC 3 года назад
I think the NDH20 is better for balancing a mix. I say that because it is never harsh in any frequency. The Beyers are harsh on the highs which doesn't give you a truly flat response which is what you want. The Beyers are better for placing your sound in a stereo field - because of the clarity. I hope that helps you.

I have a question. Does using an amp change the tone of the headphones when mixing a track?
@SanjayC
@SanjayC 3 года назад
I feel like it does slightly, but I think that’s because it’s driving it differently. I think every source slightly changes the character of phones. But it’s koala unnoticeable for most.

Oh man! You missed the two best ones! HD560S is sennheiser's flattest headphone at the moment, and the AKG K361 is about as close as you can get to the harman-target without boosting the bass. Love the recommendation of the NDH20 though. Very nice.

Id go with the Neumanns they my next cans as i I have already the kh120. I never really like the harsh kind of vibe of the beyers even though they are excellent. The sennheiser hd600 are very hi fi sounding to me (they sound very good though) with a bit of dark sound as a whole. I d be curious to test those Shure though, but analytical wise i guess neumanns are the best :) Thanks for your review Sanjay, extremely pro as usual.

What is the best audio interface to use with those high impedance headphones (specifically the DT1990 Pro) that is under the $500 price mark? I know that some of the cheaper interfaces cannot drive those headphones as well as more expensive interfaces. Could you also check them with the Maschine MK3?
@SanjayC
@SanjayC 3 года назад
I’ve checked with Focusrite interfaces and they are loud enough. Also Universal Audio interfaces drive them very loud. You may need a headphone amp for Maschine. It’s not that loud.
@noahsiekmann4275

For the high impedance phones, you'll definitely want a headphone amp to use with Maschine.

Hey Sanjay, I own the Focusrite 2i2 3rd Gen and want to buy the DT 1990 Pro 250 Ohm. The interface has around 10 Ohm I think, so do you think they will sound loud enough? Also, how comfortable are the DT 1990? I feel like my DJ headphones are too tight for longer use. Thx in advance
@SanjayC
@SanjayC 3 года назад
Great questions. I've tested 250 ohm headphones on the Focusrite 2i2 and the volume is loud enough for me (and most people who have commented before). The comfort is good, but felt a little tighter than the DT 770s. But I think that's because they are new. I find the 770s very comfortable, so I think you will too.

I keep reading it’s better to mix on open back headphones? Do you think the Shures would translate well if you wanted to use them for mixing? Thanks Sanjay
@noahsiekmann4275
@noahsiekmann4275 3 года назад
Open back is typically better for mixing for a couple of reasons. First is they tend to be less fatiguing. You can have longer mix sessions without stressing. Second open back phones tend to be better at stereo field width. They will be flatter and less likely to over enhance the bass. Ultimately you should mix with a variety of monitors and phones to be sure the songs sound good on a wide range of speakers from you laptop to high-end audiophile systems. From ear buds to the club. I usually start a mix with everything in mono. Once I get the frequency spectrum right, I open up and go stereo. It is at this stage that open back headphones really help.
@TheHitchcockBlues
@TheHitchcockBlues 3 года назад
@@noahsiekmann4275 Hey Noah, thanks so much for that detailed reply! Great information there. I have just started reading about mono mixing funny you should say that. Would your process be to mix everything in mono then slowly introduce stereo elements into the mix to build up depth and stereo width and separation? I have a feeling a lot of dense sounding mixes is where the stereo field is getting cluttered and mono elements help to space it out better? Thanks
