I'm shaving, for the first time, with the renowned 2013 Mühle R41 razor with a Voskhod razor blade. The R41 is a very well designed and impressive razor. It has a reputation for being an aggressive razor! Which it is, but I found it gives a close and comfortable shave. I'm using a sample of the Tcheon Fung Sing (TFS) professional range, Eucalyptus and Menthol shaving soap which of course pairs wonderfully with the Proraso Green, Eucalyptus and Menthol aftershave lotion.
Here is the link to the Mühle website, which details the history of the Mühle brand, from very humble beginnings in 1945, and it's development to the brand we know today:

Lovely shave Mark. I love that you incorporate the history and heritage of the shave gear in your videos. I mean this as a compliment, but I consider you the "David Attenborough" of the shaving world. All the best my friend.

+JR Reyes Thanks JR. That's a very kind compliment; I'll take it. David Attenborough - no pressure then. It would be great if I could mimic his voice. I really enjoy the history aspect and bringing out some of the stories that people might not realise. Hopefully it adds an extra bit of interest and makes my videos a little bit different from everyone else's. Take care, pal.

I got the Grande version of this on Thursday. Apart from a couple of tiny weepers and a tiny bit of razor burn under my chin (through lack of experience with this razor) the shave went well. But by GOD is this thing efficient. Takes more off in one pass, that my usual razor (Rockwell 6S plate 6) does in two passes and a touchup. Nice having a second razor in my collection to choose from. I paired it with an Astra SP blade, and I think these will be my blade of choice in the R41 for the foreseeable future. I want to gain more experience with this razor, and the last thing I want to do is confuse matters by putting different brands of blades in. Looking forward to getting some more experience under my belt with the R41. Definitely demands respect, but rewards with the closest shaves you'll probably get with a DE razor. Nice shave Mark.

Very nice shave, Mark. Your reaction to the R41 is similar to my own with the Fatip Grande, wondering what all the hubbub was about how scarily aggressive the razor is. As it happens, it's very smooth and one of my favourites. I guess one needs to experience these things and not go on hearsay.
@FriendshipShaving

+Mark Evans Thanks, Mark. You're exactly right, I just thought it was a really nice shave. I thought it would have my face off, to be honest but once the aftershave had calmed down there was no soreness or irritation at all. I actually think it is a very well designed razor. The Fatip Grande sounds quite similar. Cheers, pal.

Hello Mark, New subscriber here found you through Stephen's (Suffolk shavers) channel, I enjoy watching people use the R41 for the first time & for them to realise it's not the big bad razor its made out to be, it is aggressive but nothing to be scared of. I went back to watch some of your older videos I have the velvet razor like you & its one of my favourites also, maybe I'm biased because I'm from Birmingham & it was made here 😀 I like how in your video's there is informative history about the product's used, nice concept something different. Happy shaving 💈

+Junier Hussein Hello, Junier. The R41 did surprise me; I definitely thought it was going to be much more aggressive. I used it the other day with a Gillette Silver Blue, rather than a Voskhod, it was a good shave but I was a bit keen to chase the smooth shave and that was a mistake. You're the only other person I know of that has a Velvet razor. I'm surprised there are not more of them around, they seem to age very well and unlike the Gillette ball end handle, the Velvet handle doesn't seem to split. Does yours have the original box? I have never seen one in a box. We are the founding members of the the Old Velvet Shaving Club 😃 Hey, that's a good name. I'm glad you like the videos. Thank you very much for getting in touch. Great to 'hear' from you. Take care.

I love the R41 I can do a 2 pass shave & don't go for a bbs shave but i rather use it when i let my beard grow for a few days that way it always works better for me, My velvet razor didn't come with a box unfortunately, it's in great condition the handle is like brand new it sparkles, I also have an velvet open comb razor but I only used it twice as yet, old velvet shaving club I like that 💈Enjoy your Friday & the upcoming weekend.

+Junier Hussein A Velvet open comb. Wow. Nice. The Velvet razors I have seen have all been in pretty great condition compared to other razors of a similar age. I wonder if the nickel plating was much thicker and therefore lasts longer. Interesting. You too, pal. Have a great weekend.

Both my velvet razors still have their coatings, maybe it was manufactured better or the razors where bought or gifted & not used therefore their conditions remained intact, whatever the case amazing razors.

Another great review, thank you. Have been put off trying an R41 with its fearsome reputation. Am now going to keep an eye out for one on the various wet shaving BST, thanks for the inspiration. My favourite soap has to be P&B Spitfire. I have a couple of P&B, Citra Royale is lovely too, both soaps are magnificent performers. One DE I can thoroughly recommend (with a similar aggressive reputation) is the Fa-Tip Grande, a fantastic DE. First shave I took it very gingerly! In reality, smooth & efficient, nothing to worry about. I use it a lot in a small rotation. Happy Shaving

+Home Glen You're very welcome. Thank you. I have been pondering the P&B Spitfire, it sells quickly. I had a sample of the Citra Royale, it does have an amazing smell. I'm waiting for a sale! There are so many soaps to try. I'm so glad I've inspired you to look out for a R41; I think you'll like it. It sounds like it might be quite similar to the Fa-Tip. Happy shaving to you too. Thanks for getting in touch

I would sample Spitfire, I really love it, but, it may not be for everyone. A leather scent mixed in with wrights coal tar smell is what I get. Kerry @ P&B had a sale around the last bank holiday, but, it all sold out before I could take advantage! He has a new bay rum inspired soap coming soon, I've been dropping hints to the family for my birthday. Best, Jon

The previous version of the R41, which didn't have the "barbed wire" over the comb was reportedly even more aggressive than the current one. I used to own a Chinese two-face razor: One side open comb, the other one closed bar - with the word "closed" loosely applied. The open comb side was aggressive, almost too aggressive for daily use. I remember that I tried it on my legs, with soap lather and a green Derby blade. The sound it made was that of somebody crumpling up potato chips. Shortly before I was finished, I noticed a drop of blood on the comb. This reminded me of me first trying a Feather blade (in a generic Chinese TTO razor). I was finished and then, when I was about to put the razor away, I nicked myself on the shoulder. But unlike the cut I inflicted on myself with the Feather, this time the nick closed on its own. The other side of the razor was a prime example of Chinese cheap. Unevenly poured and not safe to use. The open comb, while aggressive, was technically safe, but the closed bar (with enough blade exposure to fit in a lentil) was junk. I continued to use the razor for some time but eventually found it bothersome to keep two razors on the shelf (each one loaded with a different kind of blade) because I couldn't use the aggressive one when I was in a hurry. Eventually, the razor turned me off aggressive ones. I still like open combs though: I shave with a Merkur 15 C almost every day.
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 5 лет назад
The description of shaving to the sound of crumpled up potato chips made me wince, a little. That was really well written 😬 Ouch. I've never fancied a razor that is open comb, on one side and closed on the other. I would probably always use the open comb side. I suppose the idea is to use the more aggressive side for the first pass and the flip it to the other side for consecutive passes. I do like open comb razors, very much. My favourite is my Gillette 102A single ring (1921-29); I find it to be a great shave although I am enjoying a Gillette Goodwill at the moment but that is a little more tricky. Some shaves are amazing and some leave me sore. A bit of practice should get it right - I hope!

@@FriendshipShaving Thanks very much. It went well - I took it slowly and used no pressure, so no bloodbath :). It only took a couple of passes, with some minor clean-ups, like your shave here, and all was done. I used a Crystal Israeli Personna, the blue ones, on it's second use, on three days growth and yes while you can feel the blade more, it was not as scary as I had feared. I think for every day shaves, I'll stick to the Merkur 34c or the 37c but it's great to have this one when I need it. Great channel by the way!

As a reply to your message and thanks very much by the way with my Muhle R41 I do not use the original handle that came with the razor as I found it to be to light to hold and use so I've gone to a much heavier handle that I've order from Fendrihan Canada and since I have the new handle that razor has become even more of a joy to use. Also watched a video of you shaving with the Rockwell 2c razor I believe as was thinking about ordering that razor but now I decided to wait for the new Rockwell Model T to come out as that razor would seem to be more simpleted than using the Rockwell 2c or the 6c. Okay have a nice day Cheers

Hi Mark, the one soap I could use happily as the one and only would have to be Acca Kappa White Moss. Maybe it is a nostalgic choice, considering that the brand factory is located near Venice Italy, where I was born. On a different note, it is a hard cream that has a wonderful scent (to my nose), excellent slickness, and is kind to sensitive skin - a joy to use. Regards, Roberto

Two for the price of one, on all their soaps and creams, on the U.S. website, Roberto. I haven't found a European website yet, but I've only been looking for a few minutes. www.accakappa.us/collections/mens?page=3 I love Venezia. I really love Italy - I drove from Roma to Pisa, once on New Year's Eve. The only thing was we left our passports in Roma and the hotel in Pisa wouldn't let us stay! At midnight, as the fireworks in Firenze exploded around us, ours was the only car on the flyover. True story 😃

I just bought the r41 head. Used it with a barber pole and, for a change, a short handle, which I quite like. I used the handles off Sharpy razors that are on eBay and are ok for £10; as well made as anything else.
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 6 лет назад
I like the R41 head and I don't like the handle quite so much. It's a little bit longer than I prefer but that seems to be the way, with the modern de safety razors. Mind you, I would like a Mühle Rocca, with the bark handle; I think it looks really nice. I can't afford one but it is on my list of things to look out for. Perhaps there will be a sale, in the New Year. I've just had the most amazing shave - but you'll have to wait for the video 😜 BTW. I mention you in the video.

Can't you swap to a shorter handle from another razor? The lighter handle makes the razor less aggressive. Bit of razor burn today - never had it before, ever! Fatip Grande the offender and the Tabac dries off with little slickness. New soap to me. Maybe more than 10 seconds required.
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 6 лет назад
Yes, I could do that. I find the FaTip to be a mild razor, usually. I'm surprised it 'burnt' you. The first time ever! Blimey. I only get razor burn occasionally, now and usually it will be on my neck after using a straight razor.

@FriendshipShaving 3 года назад
The R41 is quite a step up from your DE89. I know they aren't too expensive but I'd recommend trying to find one second hand. They are a good close shave but lots of people find them too aggressive. I would try a Fatip razor if you a step up, perhaps the Grande. I've chosen that because they are not expensive. Or, Edwin Jagger make the stainless steel 3one6, which is meant to be between the DE89 and the R41. The Mühle Rocca is a similar level 😊

I was particularly interested in your review because you and I had the same impression about the Rex Ambassador when it comes to the positive blade exposure and not giving a comfortable shave. Do you consider the R41 to be more comfortable and to have less blade feel than the Rex Ambassador? Long ago I had decided never to shave with the R41 based on all the talk about its aggressiveness and especially being nicknamed "The Beast.". One soap for the rest off my life, hase to be Stirling Coniferous. A scent from a deep old wood. Love it.

+Jan Thorkildsen Hi, Jan. Thank you for getting in touch; for some reason your message appeared three times. From the comments I read online, it seems Stirling have a good name, it sounds a very nice indeed and quite unique soap; I went to their website. Is it very moisturising post shave, as it's made using Shea butter? Some soaps seem to over moisturise my skin.

Executive man by Stirling is my favorite. The smell of heaven.

I have just got a sample of that one! I used to to walk my dogs in the oldest woodland in Europe, which is in Wales. I don't know how they work that out but I shall look forward to trying Coniferous 😀

Hallo.

Hello, Mark is there a difference between the head of 2011 and 2013? thank you Best regards
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 6 лет назад
Oh yes! The 2011 is the bad cop, the 2013 is the good cop 😃👍 The head design was changed because the 2011 is very aggressive. The 2013, while still an aggressive razor gives an amazing smooth shave. I love mine although everyone's experience is different. Have a great day. Where are you in the World?

The R 41 makes you hold it at the correct angle or it makes you regret it, so in a sense it makes your shaving technique excellent!😁👌I’ve had mine about a week now and I do a WTG and (Against)TG pass and it’s so close sometimes I think my beard will never grow back lol

I've had a few of those close shaves, Mike! You make a good point about the razor making you hold it at the correct angle. I must bring out my R41 again, sometime. I haven't used it for ages.

Hi Christopher. I'm not. At the time I had to move it along to put the money towards something else. My skin seems to have changed in the last few years, I wonder if I would still like it. I'll maybe have to borrow one sometime and try it again. Cheers.

That's a hard question, Mike. I'm not sure. They are not as sharp as a feather or some of the sharper blades but they are incredibly smooth and comfortable, for me. I've only encountered one odd packet that weren't terrific. Let me know how you get on with them, please. 👍

I know nothing is as sharp as a feather but I thought they were up there with PolSilver and Perma sharp blades

I asked on the Facebook group. Here's some suggestions: Personna; Ladas, Astra Green, Treet ,if it was sharp and Douglas Smythe commented that it would make no difference as it is very subjective. So, in other words - we're no use to you at all 🙂 Actually, they are a little like a Personna but smoother.

R41 is it. It gets even better with a grippy handle like the OSS or Bulldog. Personally, I could let all my other razors retire and I will never need to try any other razor, unless Muhle would come up with an upgraded luxury R41 stainless steel head or something. Imagine that, R41S, I would buy that, for sure.
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 7 лет назад
+Slaget vid Brännkyrka That would be good with a nice bulldog handle. I'm on the lookout. It is a great shave; I can't wait to use it later today. An R41s - you might be onto something there. I like the way the blade doesn't stick out of the sides.

van der Hagen unscented luxury glycerin soap or Derby menthol creme is what I always use

+1uheepwizard Two good names there. I'm pondering trying a Derby stick, when my Arko runs out. The only thing is, Arko lasts for ages!

Friendship Shaving I like the vander hagen because it unscented, inexpensive and works well. I generally don't like fragrances except my nivea cooling after shave balm and once in a while I use the derby cream if I want menthol shave or I add a dab of that or Cremo menthol to the soap.

I'm sorry Sebastian but I don't understand. What do you mean by 'a harder handle'? Do you mean heavier? I think the R41 is very good just as it is. May er that will answer your question. 🙂

+Chris James No, my friend. By then they will have the Gillette Laser Razor. A beam that burns the hair off your face leaving your skin in damaged. Razor burn will be a thing of the distant past :) and people won't believe that once, men used a blade!

Hi Willy. I've settled into a two pass shave, now that works well for me but I've yet to try a slant razor. It's on my list 👍 I was having a conversation about this razor just the other day. Thanks for your comment.

yeah a lovely piece made out of pot metal or whatever they call it. I don't understand why they use this material to make razors. I have a fatip piccolo and it is made out of brass, completely different feel in the hand. Yes it has imperfections but the point is if Italians can use brass and sell their razors quite cheap why can't the other manufacturers also do that.
@FriendshipShaving
@FriendshipShaving 6 лет назад
+Hristo Hristov I agree, Hristo. A brass razor does have a very nice feel to it which is one of the reasons, I suspect, why the vintage Gillette razors remain do popular. I've not used a Fatip razor and didn't realise they were brass or Italian. I'll have to look out for one. Thank you for the information. Mark
@DellaStreet123
@DellaStreet123 5 лет назад
Fatip razors are inexpensive, all-brass and the open-comb version has similar blade exposure as the R41. But the main reason why Fatip razors aren't that popular among DE shavers is that they have subpar quality control. Some complain about uneven plating or warped teeth. This doesn't mean that you cannot get a good one from that brand, of course. But one guy who collects DE razors says that the only one of his razors that ever broke was a Fatip that lost a tooth when it fell into the sink. I, on the other hand, dropped a Merkur 15 C accidentally to the floor once, and on another occasion, it flew threw the shower when the basked dislocated (note: I don't keep it in there all the time, which would be unwise) and the razor survived it, zinc alloy head or no zinc alloy head. Sometimes, I think, it's a question of luck. If you have an all stainless steel razor, it will probably survive any fall, but your sink or bathroom tile might not.@@FriendshipShaving

That's a very interesting comment Anneke, thank you. I've had a Fatip Grande, for a while now and, as you mention, the finish is a little poor, thankfully it is just cosmetic. I would be very disappointed, if I ever dropped it and it lost a tooth but I do understand that brass open comb razors do tend to be a little brittle in that regard. You're right - the sink is never going to beat a stainless steel razor! 🙂
