Despite all the reviews, all the recommendations, all the benchmark LARP, it still seems just super hard, really an inconvenience to get a simple, straight, easy-to-understand answer on whether you should get the M1 Pro or M1 Max MacBook Pro and why. Battery life vs. performance. Portability vs. power. All the things. Well, I’m going to give you that answer!

I realize most apple tech reviewers never have to worry about using old mac’s as a daily driver, but the reason I am buying the M1 Max is because I plan to use it for the next 5 to 7 years at least. I am on my 3rd MacBook and average 6 years between each. It is nice to have someone talk about the future proofing potential out of the M1 Max.

Totally! My old MacBook is Early 2013 15.4'' MBP. I used it nearly every day during the past 9 years since bought. It still works fine for lite work, but slow for video editing and photography retouching workflow. So I recently bought a 16'' brand new with M1 Max, 64GB RAM, 4TB SSD for the future 10 years.

Until we get FaceID and better performance on the new Macbooks. Then your "keep it for 5 to 7 years" defense will crumble and you will give in and buy one. Don't try to future proof your machine and buy what you need today.

I know a lot of pro’s that use M1’s, myself included. I simply don’t have the workload to fully leverage what the M1 Pro has to offer. Which is great! Apple has blurred the lines of what is pro and what is consumer grade products. The good news for everyone is the once consumer priced products are now pro-viable options depending on what you need.

You pretty much nailed it. We have an ad agency and were using MacBook airs to run Adobe creative cloud no problem. Yes of course some people need more. The thing that I find very light not very genuine is Renee talking about battery life. Of course the pro in the promax is not gonna have the same battery life unplugged. The problem is how Apple presents it like it is going to I have friends that have the pro in the max and it just doesn’t last as long as the air or the MacBook Pro 13 inch it’s just not going to but you shouldn’t say that I could do some thing I mean who is going to buy a Max or a pro to just search the web. Now I say that and of course a lot of people would. My point is is that I just think it’s a little got a hate using the word disingenuous by I think it’s very weird to compare those two. And also I agree with you they have blurred lines but I think that’s a good thing because I don’t think the majority of people really need the max or the pro. Yes it’s faster but how much faster. Yes I know it’s a lot faster but for most people I would guess easily in the 80 to low 90% range you can do work that you get paid for on the M1 air and the 13 inch MacBook Pro or the M1 iMac and you are more than fine

@Jaquan Kelsor If you're a pro who needs the better screen for pro photo/video work, you'll know. If you need better 3D graphics renders, you'll know. M1 is amazing, but not if you're using Blender for anything 3D. You can definitely do video on M1, but if you depend on that for your income and do many in rotation you can use the extra speed of the MacBook Pro.
@bgimusic

@@roguewavecreative don't let the Pro name determine your enjoyment of a product. You are a pro, but design is not as CPU intensive as video or 3D. I know some of pros who make a full income working on 2012 MacBooks :o. The M1 laptops have P3 displays. They are so color accurate and great with contrast. If you need to make HDR content you may enjoy the pro more tho. Don't let the name fool you. The 2020 Macbook Air M1 keynote included pros for a reason. And these people need to know what they are buying. There are more efficiency cores on the M1. There are more performance cores on M1 Pro/M1 Max than efficiency cores so yes the battery life is different, but tasks are being completed faster even if not explicitly noticed. Another thing is they are not lying. They are not claiming battery is the same on the Pros. They are talking efficiency and performance per watt. 🤍💡

I agree with you, the M1 Mini is just fine and will cope easily with most 4k content needs. 8k is still silly right now and if your final cut timelines are that complicated you may be missing the point! My 2012 MacBook Pro has essentially been working for just about a decade, but I haven’t been able to use it professionally for about 3-4 years. I was going to upgrade in 2020, until the rumors of what we now now as M1 was coming. Now, I’m rewarding my patience by getting a fully maxed out M1 Max, and just being able to use a personal laptop professionally again is going to make all the difference, and I bet I can make it pay for itself. If it lasts anywhere close to as long as my last one, I’ll be thrilled, and I’ll be shocked if it doesn’t.

It’s an amazing machine that being said I have an ad agency and were using MacBook airs an M1 IMAX and we are having no problems with anything. I really think it comes down to you know can I do this faster and you know there are some people that need all that power but the majority of people don’t need it. They really don’t really don

What kind of work do you do? My MacBooks go several years but they pay for themselves 100x+ over in that lifespan. My biggest motivation for getting new is not faster render times, etc, it’s user experience. Scrubbing through 4K vids smoothly, running tons of photoshop actions, having your adjustment be visible instantly makes the work much more enjoyable. My 2016 Touch Bar will play 4 seconds of 4K before stopping, you just can’t edit like that

Does it have a HDD or SSD? I had a 2012 15" pro with HDD and dedicated graphics and it was a bit of a disappointment performance wise and only lasted 3 years. My 2017 13" integrated graphics pro (cheapest in the pro range at the time iirc) felt like a HUGE performance upgrade, likely due to the SSD, while being much more portable and is still going strong with 5+ years of hard daily use (albeit with two battery replacements so far).

There’s currently no differentiation between them. M1, M1 pro, and M1 Max all have the same A14-generation 16 core Apple Neural Engine, same Matrix multiplication accelerators on the CPU, and same machine learning controller. The only difference is the amount of GPUs if your particular machine learning happens to tickle those. Totally should’ve mentioned that, thanks for pointing it out!

I elected to go with non-binned M1Pro w 32GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD. It made sense to me since I am coming from a 2014 i7 15" MBP that was spec'd out (3800 US at the time). I wanted smaller and I figured this was a huge upgrade from that system. And to me, AArch64 is still a gamble, but one worth taking as I feel x86-64 has not really been impressive the last few years. I think this Mac is great (Monterey, not so much, yet). I figured this will get me through the next couple of years and perhaps Apple will sell a unit I want with the ports and perhaps, in addition to internal expensive storage, they through in a NVMe slot to add storage internally. I do very light video work, but mostly photography (Capture One/Affinity as I dumped Adobe a few years ago). I hope in two years time these machines give us more.

UPS lost the first M1-Max MBP 14 (32GB, 24GPU) that Apple shipped in late October. In the month it took me to get a replacement shipped, I watched a bunch of videos by you and other RU-vidrs running different configurations through their paces. I'm a sports photographer, and the configuration is great for me and should be future proof for years to come. That said, In all the testing by you and others, I rarely saw you get the fans to kick in. I can make my MBP M1-Max sound like a hovercraft with this simple trick: Play Sid Meier's Civilization VI via Steam. Mid-game the fans are screaming. I got the laptop the day before a work trip. I didn't have time to set it up to use it, but I took it along to work on it in my down-time. Which included a cross country flight. Within two hours it was alerting me that the battery of my day-old MBP was getting low and that I should plug in (which I did). The game plays great, but it definitely works the machine hard.
@cameronf3343
@cameronf3343 2 года назад
Games more intense than internet flash games or mind-passifying App Store games should never be played on a laptop. You can absolutely expect something so advanced as Civilization VI to drain the battery rapidly no matter what laptop it is. While the GPUs are impressive, all Apple laptops are still optimized for productivity tasks which make high use of CPUs over GPUs. There are gaming laptops out there but the majority of them still also last less than 2-3 hours a charge when playing. No laptop will ever be viable for demanding gaming until an immense battery innovation and rollout is achieved. GPUs are simply too demanding of hardware.

I put a lot of thought into my order. I eventually settled on the base model for two big reasons. Most 3d modeling software as well as music and video software which could really make use of the extra GPU cores have yet to be fully optimized for Apple Silicon. And two, ARM V9 is on the horizon and will able to handle more complex tasks than the current V8 M1 Macs. So While we wait for those two things, and all the dust has settled, possibly as early as next year, we would really be able to make good use of a far better MAX vs a Pro. Let’s remember, these are first gen Apple Silicon Macs.

I got it because if wanted a new macbook after 7 years using the 2014 one. I bought the max because if want to maybe keep it for 3 to maybe even another 7 years. I got 32gb RAM because 16gb is sort of standard now so getting a bit more for future. I took the 16“ because i had the 13“ before and that always was a bit of a problem with screen space. I do mostly programming with 3d stuff as i made maybe clear in other comments. I might do in future videos on programming so having these media encoders as long as i don’t directly use it in one of my programs can really help to get these things processed quickly. What i made also maybe clear in comments under other videos is that we shouldn’t expect it to beat a Asus Zapahrus or something like that in Performance. But that’s ultimately not really interesting anyways for my use cases. Being honest about performance and seeing the difference between that and PPW is definitely a key thing.

A 2020 M1 still remains a great choice for many: portable, powerful and very good battery life. But I personally prefer having my laptop be my moderate-intensity computer and a desktop be my high-intensity computer, for obvious reasons but power management being the main of them. So even though the Max chips are tempting to put into a laptop I definitely will be doing an M2 Pro chip in a laptop and an M2 Max or Ultra chip in a desktop. For people who only want one computer it’s definitely sensible to just put in a Max but for the way I use my computers, it wouldn’t.

Now that my Laptop recently died i need a new one. I decided to go for a MacBook Pro 16“ as i love the big Trackpad, the better Battery and the better heat management. I asked the uni what they require (specs). They said MacBook with M1 Chip, 16GB (better 32GB) RAM and 512GB (better 1TB) SSD. I will plug in 2-3 external monitors. I guess for now 2 should be fine but maybe in a few months or years i want a 3rd (they most likely will be 4k monitors). As i often work with 5-8 open programms that i all use at the same time. I will be working with normal things graphic designers do (photoshop, illustrator, xd, also webdevelopmemt and UI), besides that i will be cutting 4k videos for a sidejob. So it could easiely be the case that i just finished a Video and export it. Next to exporting i listen to music and work for uni (graphic things). Also i want to go a bit future proof due to the fact that i want to use this MacBook for about 6-7 years i would say, maybe even more. So i definitly dont want to get a new one in 3 years. Thats why its so hard for me to get the right specs. Can someone help me out or share their experience. Im just getting into graphics design. So idk how much performance all these adobe programms require. Im not rly on a budget but i dont want to waste my money. I see this as an investetment for my school carreer, my first job, etc.

Good job. I'll likely be getting the same specs unit, as I've enough external storage to back up anything of serious importance. Also - I don't want to put any more money or work into my MacPro 8-core 50lb beast - time to sell it off and lighten up. Moreover, my late 2011 MBP really is late - as of October 2021. When you’re spending that much $$, I think of the entry level as a small soft drink where you are paying the “entry fee” then the difference in cost from there is minimal when compared to the “entry cost” of $2K. For example looking strictly at CPU: the base 14” MacBook Pro: Small=$1999 8 core, 14 core GPU, 16GB RAM Medium=$2299. 10 core CPU, 16 core GPU, 16GB Ram Large=$2,899. 10 core CPU, 24 core GPU, 32GB Ram Extra Large=$3,099. 10 core CPU, 32 core GPU, 32GB Ram

I don’t think there’s enough for a whole video. The CPUs are the same. The extra video rendering engines wouldn’t make a difference. So it just depends if you need the extra GPU and ram. And that wouldn’t be specific to developers, just to the type of development work. Maybe the amount of simulators, but most likely if you’re doing a lot of modeling for games, If you need a ton of textures and other effects, especially on battery.

I have a 16" 32 GB M1 Pro. Perfect computer for me. I use 20ish GB somewhat normally for my highest use case. Gives me plenty of extra space. Thoughts on the M1 Max is that it's too much for what I do. Work bought me this one and will buy me a 64 GB model in the future if I really need that. Pros know what they need and can justify it for company expense if they need more. I run 2 computers - 1 is a PC with i9 and 64 GB ram that I throttle all the time. The other is this Mac. I love the Mac for everything light and local code based. Anything more expensive computationally still goes to intel in my workflow. The biggest limitation in the new arm processors is the exclusion of a thorough upgrade to arm module. Upgrading my IDE/programming engines was a pain and it's not automated yet (fortran compilation in arm is still tricky but possible). All this said, this computer is so much faster than my previous 15" intel pro. It was my workhorse and ran simulated annealing tasks (parallelized) at 3 sec/operation. Now I'm running at .1 sec/operation on identical data.

I think the lineup couldn't be more clear to choose between professional vs maintream consumer. People who couldn't stop debating which one to buy are people who simply just like to buy things more than their needs but limited budget, a.k.a enthusiast in a budget. Harsh, but that's reality.
@ghost-user559
@ghost-user559 2 года назад
Also longevity though. It actually makes sense for a mainstream consumer to max out a computer if they won’t update it for 6-10 years. Definitely depends on use case, but everything from simple websites to video renders becoming more intensive means even a casual needs to consider a 5-10 year jump in computing needs.

@@PcHabitat I use Chrome for work and in my experience of about a year, M1s handle Chrome fine. There's a native Apple Silicon build that works well enough that I haven't noticed anything different about it. I basically got the model that absolutely no RU-vidr recommend, the 14 inch M1 Pro 10 + 14 core, here's how I got here : I absolutely did not want the 16 inch as it was just too big and heavy for me to carry around in my backpack, so 14 inch was an absolute must. My old 2012 15 inch MBP was already 2.02 Kilos, so the fact that the 16 inch is even heavier, no way. As for M1 pro and m1 max, I highly doubt I'll even fully utilize the M1 Pro's power, let alone the M1 max, so future proofing wise I'm sure the M1 pro is more than enough for me. I went with 10 cores as I thought it'd offer more performance, even though in reality it really doesn't , which is a bummer.Didnt upgrade the GPU as 2 extra cores didn't seem necessary. Everything else was base though I do wish I had upgraded to 1TB of storage, but so far I'm extremely happy with my purchase. I used the 2012 MBP for more than 6-7 years so I'm sure I'll get at least 4-5 years out of this one !
