Thanks, good review. After spending 3 days on reviews, I opted for the m1 pro with 32GB of RAM. I was torn between m1 pro and max only to get 64GB or RAM but went with the pro as there seems to be more battery drainage with the max due to the cores always taking more power. I dont do any graphic tasks, just computing, so hopefully this is more than enough for next years

This was great! Thank you! I have the max 16” 32 core 32 gb 1 tb. I put it through a stress test that I would never do. Not even half of the memory used. 17 streams of 4k on 4k timeline. All have various effects that are GPU heavy (base grade and stylize and blurs) All while streaming a movie and 9 tabs open on chrome watching RU-vid hdr tests…. Never went past 19gb of memory with ZERO swap. Was a little nervous about not going 64gb but won’t run into trouble unless your dealing exclusively with 6k raw(which this one handles) or 8k+ (haven’t tested on this) hope this helps… Oh btw had a maxed out 14in and swapped it for the 16in mainly for that display and what makes sense for me

To what extent does the better thermal performance of the 16 inch actually matter in terms of graphics handling (like with effects and stuff when editing)

I honestly believe Apple added the 64 GB of RAM or unified memory, to make “Pros” feel better. It’s basically impossible to hit 32 GB usage on these new Apple silicone and have any real world impact, but people would freak out if they didn’t see 64 GB.

Fantastic video. My use case is Sony FX6 and A7SIII 4K footage on the same PP timeline (either H264, H265 or pro res) with durations from 1-30 mins. My conclusion is your option 2 but perhaps with 2TB SSD to take advantage of the speed?

@Richard_Lutz
@Richard_Lutz 2 года назад
That's a tough question. I think it really comes down to the codec of the footage. I just sold my GH5 and was shooting 300 Mbps with it. I got the mid-teir MBP and I wish I spent the extra $600 to have the best one. My recommendation would be try and get the most you money can buy. The reality is your computer could outlast the cameras that you're shooting with. Also, you never know if you're going to find yourself working with raw footage. A lot of prosumer cameras are now shipping with raw capabilities.

I think you can get by a little better on 16GB than your friend suggests. We know from the original M1 that it will start to have issues with long 4 multicam timelines. But with these faster hard drives and faster memory access, the penalty for 16 GB seems to be much less. From the only example I have seen, the penalty for exports seems to be only a couple percent. Where it was more like 15% on the original M1. I would rather spend that money on a 2 TB SSD. If you think that you need the 32GB, go max for only another $200. If you are doing this amount of heavy video files, you should be making real money to pay for this.
@Richard_Lutz
@Richard_Lutz 2 года назад
Valid point. I guess the thing that I'm trying to evaluate is the abundance of all these affordable cameras capable of shooting 4K+ at 10-bit. RED files at 8K scare me the most.
@drsmith1988

I want to render 10 hours 4k gaming video on Ps5! So which macbook should I get?
@Richard_Lutz
@Richard_Lutz 2 года назад
First off, why 10 hours? That is an extremely long video and it is going to take a long time to render. With that in mind you're going to want to pretty beefy machine. Regardless, it could take quite some time to get through. Lastly, what are your analytics saying do you expect people to stay engaged for that period of time? My honest reaction without seeing your channel or your analytics is that you will have a tough time keep people engaged for a long period of time. I could be wrong tho.

Main thing many of us are seeking are what the battery drain, fan noise and heat in those Max chips vs Pro. The cost to jump from pro to max is $200. People are willing to pay it unless it causes fans to blaze, heat to increase and battery drain suffer.

I am exactly on the same case and did not ordered my 14 inch yet because of this dilemna. Any review clearly deal with that point?
@nemson1
@nemson1 2 года назад
@@aurelielibar5657 the same. I was going to take 14" m1 max (24 core), but after viewing through a bunch of videos and threads on reddit it seems that 14" isn't really that good for m1 max chip. The battery, I think, isn't the main problem, but the noise in some tests is really loud. A couple of days ago I was in the store to compare both sizes and 14" is really good and comfortable for me (cause for more professional work I'll use external monitor btw). Idk, but 14" model looks more aesthetic. But despite all its pros, I think I'm going for a 16" version because of temperature and noise. In the same stress tests while 14" spins coolers at about 4500 rpm (which is pretty audible), 16" is just for 2000-2300 rpm... If you have now another opinion - say please. It would be interesting for me to read that, cause I'm still trying to make the right decision

They throttle the 32core on the 14 inch because of smaller fans. You can see it in some of the reviews from MaxTech. If somebody were to get a a 14" and they wanted the power sweet spot I would suggest the 24core
