Edit: For additional information on these, including some unpublished documentation, see the C&Rsenal video on the 1903 Springfield: • History of WWI Primer ...
One of the more interesting and unusual - and rare - variations of the M1903 Springfield is the version that was “Stripped for Air Service”. Contrary to common belief, these were not used as in-flight aircraft armament before the use of machine guns, or as antiaircraft armament for observation balloon crews. Instead, they were developed by Springfield Armory in early 1918 as a pilot’s survival rifle - armament to be used in case one crash landed in enemy territory.
The modifications made include cutting down the stock and hand guard to reduce weight, adding a fixed 25-round box magazine, elimination of the sling swivels, and simplification of the rear sight to a 100-yard notch. The large fixed magazine was chosen because a pilot would not be carrying extra ammunition in a cartridge belt, as would a normal infantryman. All the ammunition he would have if he needed to use the survival rifle would be what was stored in the rifle itself.
A total of 910 of these modified rifles were made, and 908 of them shipped to France in late June, 1918. They were never put into service though, and 680 were still in a French depot at the end of the war. The remainder may have been distributed to some airfields, but they were never actually used. With the end of the war, the rifles were put into storage in the US along with the mass of other war materiel. In the mid 1920s, much of this stock was scrapped, and the surviving Air Service 1903s were either destroyed or converted to standard infantry pattern rifles. Very few survived this process, making them extremely rare today. This particular one came from the collection of Bruce Canfield.

So Bubba sporterized it, but Bubba worked for US ordnance at Springfield Armory during WW1.

I wouldn't exactly call a bigger magazine and less precise sights "sporterized", even if the slight weight reduction via removal of wood may be similar to what many civilian versions did.

Hamish McGregor I have seen sks rifles sporterized with clunky expanded mags and red dot sights. There are also ATI mag expansions for the mosin nagant and unspeakably bad promag magazines for Lee Enfields. Before prices went up it was pretty common in my area to see milsurp bolt guns with the rear sight swapped for a weaver base with a BSA red dot on it. Thankfully the air service rifle lacks a krylon paint job.

The pre-1900 logic of a 25 round fixed magazine of that size loaded by clips and the other compacted features being left to a "survival rifle" make this a special example of the often contradictory design attitudes around the time of WW1. Top stuff.

@SheepInACart
@SheepInACart 6 лет назад
Yep. Although given you had zero ability to reload, I guess even 25 wouldn't seem a lot to somebody actually forced to use this as intended... I'm kind of surprised they didn't go for like 10-15, but fix 1-2 extra stripper clips to the rifle somehow, like indented into the right side of the stock, or more sensibly just in the bug out bag of other supplies a crewman would realistically need before even considering a full sized rifle... like some way to get water or stabilize injuries. After all, the chance of repelling attack if found seems a lot lower than the chance of nature getting to you first IMO. At least with tank crews ect they typically would have the rest of such supplies in the vehicle, and you'll generally be somewhat near allies, so something like this may actually give you a fighting chance.

Forgotten Weapons Would you be able to include a link to the new information in the description, or do a follow-up video?
@Crash-To-Desktop
@Crash-To-Desktop 6 лет назад
Not what historical cablegrams state. Can't argue with that. Besides, Othais also noted that there aren't any sling swivels - and if you were going to be on the ground hauling this thing around after getting shot down, it might be a good idea to have a sling on it.
@brettd2308
@brettd2308 6 лет назад
+toomanyaccounts Yes, the Air Service wanted a semi-auto, specifically a Winchester .401 with incendiary ammo. The cables went on to specify that if that were not possible, an automatic pistol with a stock would do, as long as it was lighter than the Winchester .351 but just as powerful. The problem is that the Ordnance Department took it upon themselves to rush engineer a cheaper solution, which we see here. The cablegrams from the period detail that this happened, and that they had already produced the rifle before discovering that the Air Service didn't find it suitable. We're not actually sure if it ever saw service at all - they were delivered to France, and the Ordnance Department requested that they be tested in combat over the front during October 1918, but it appears that the Air Service instead preferred to keep using the Winchester .351 they already had from the French. Right at the end of the war, they were declared fit for issue to second-line troops such as drivers & couriers, but there likely wasn't time for them to actually be issued in this role. You mention several times in the comments how absurd it would be for a pilot to take his hands off the controls to use a rifle - indeed, weapons of this type were used by gunners & observers, which many WW1 planes had. The cables even make mention that a single-seater plane needs no backup weapon at all, not even a pistol, because the pilot has to focus on maneuver as his form of defense. They also mention that a gunner could use his rifle to fire upon an enemy plane hiding in the blind spot of his machine guns, indicating another use outside of gun malfunctions.
@brettd2308
@brettd2308 6 лет назад
+toomanyaccounts We actually do know the Ordnance Department's response, which is what I summarized above. If you watch the C&Rsenal video on the Springfield 1903, specifically the segment covering the Air Service Carbine, Othais makes it clear that his archival research turned up multiple back-and-forth cablegrams that communicated this procurement debacle. He didn't publicly link them because he didn't have permission to (from the sound of things), but after the issue with Ian's video came up, he got permission to release the original cablegram as proof. That's the one we have to inspect. The Ordnance Department response and the ensuing back-and-forth aren't publicly on the internet yet, but they're intact and covered in the C&Rsenal video. As I said in the third point of my post, the cablegram that Ian & Othais linked in the followup video clearly states that pilots do not need a backup weapon, only gunners & observers, so the Ordnance Department would've known that. If you go read the original cablegram in question, this is covered in the very last point (which starts "The Colt pistol is generally not used in single-seaters.") If the cables hadn't been discovered, a survival rifle would be the best explanation. But we literally have contemporary historical documentation stating that it was meant to be used as a backup weapon for air combat, by gunners & observers in case of machine gun malfunction, and that it proved unsatisfactory in that role. The problem here is that the Ordnance Department ignored the semi-auto requirement in the original request and instead went with a cheaper bolt-action conversion that made sense to them logistically, but completely failed to meet the Air Service requirements. So looking back in hindsight, it can be difficult to imagine the thought process that would result in such a mistake.

These are, by far, the two most credible, diligent, and trustworthy sources of meaningful firearms content on the web (add Karl and Ian and InRange). Kudos to Ian and Othias for collaborating on this and other ventures and avoiding zero sum game mentality. And regardless of what any of the historical documents state, that rifle would SUCK as an air to air gun.

@dwerg85 6 лет назад
Othais. He had access to better documentation. That said. Pay good attention to what Othais was saying. Springfield made the rifle as an air to air weapon thinking that's what they were asked for. But they were mistaken. The client wanted a semi-automatic weapon. So while springfield jumped the gun and made the rifle with the intention of sending it to be used as air to air, it was never the intention of the client to use the thing as such.

I would love to own one of those...put a good sight on it and a bipod, and you have a superb sniper rifle. Actually, they were intended to be used by aircrew if their machine guns malfunctioned. At the time that happened often. Pilots asked for a semi-automatic gun that could be used in the cockpit of an airplane. What was produced was this...something utter impracticle. A&Rnsenal has a great video on this weapon.

I wonder; If, in addition to removing the forend for weight savings, why not also shorten the barrel? Doing that though, really didn't seem that prevalent around that time outside of things like going from the G98 to the K series, for example, though I may be mistaken. I just find it a bit odd shortening barrels wasn't (or doesn't *seem* to be) more of a thing back then as it is now, at least as far as I can tell. With a little work, things like the M1E5/T26's (for example) or the so-called "Tanker Garands" seemed to me could have been made to work (and personally would've been a really cool thing). Maybe them not being adopted/pursued further is an indication it wasn't really worth it though, lol.

"But sir, what good is the "03 going to do us if the plane is burning and we can't abandon it and jump with a 'chute?" "Um, yes Lt Luke. I see you point." In my considered opinion, this was not one of the US Army Air Service's better ideas. And just where does Lt Luke or Capt Rickenbacker stow this thing in their Newport or Spad. According to Othias and crew over at C&Rsenal they have evidence that the intent of these rifles was to fire them from the planes in flight when the machine guns malfunctioned. Jams happened often and usually could not be fixed while in flight so it was a supplemental weapon. Please go to minute 54 of the M1903 Springfield episode for reference. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Jhh4wIS6zMI.html

Doesn't this conflict with what C&R was saying how this is a backup for a malfunctioning machine gun? But rejected and given to couriers?

The lighting looks particuarly blue in the last few vids, I don't think its my monitors or phones. anyone else see it?

I think it would be easier to edit the video with some comment about the new information, instead to having to reply to every other comment. But I'm not a youtuber, so I might be wrong.

Try resetting the white balance on your video camera guys, I'm sure Ian isn't blue.

With only 26 rounds in enema terra, I’d kinda want an option for a modicum of sound suppression, and a couple or more boxes of ammo tucked away in my shorts…jmho…

What would be the merits of having a thinner barrel the way this one does? Makes it look a bit like an M1A1 Carbine.

Weight reduction, I suppose

@@saintroddy Seems to me that you'd want a heavier barrel to help with the recoil of those massive bullets.

So, from a tinkerer’s standpoint, what would it take to replicate this configuration from an already-Bubba’d ‘03?
