It's the M2 Max with the 38 core GPU, 32gb of unified memory and 1tb of storage. I edit 4K and some 6K videos (5 to 10 minutes in length) with color correction, graphics and some effects. I also use a 2020 iMac i7 3.8Ghz with 64gb ram as my desktop. This new Macbook Pro is replacing a 2015 MB.

Highly considering the Max with 32gb and 1 or 2TB but… no one has yet to explain what the difference in 32 and 38 core is 🥹 Which one should I get??! I edit multiple 4K video with advanced coloring and some graphics. Also cull and edit thousands of photos in Lightroom. Cheers!

From what i've gathered : - macbook pro M2 : everyone, video editors included - M2 max : 3D video makers Don't forget in 1 year they'll be obsolete due to the M3 gen, so no need to buy the absolute best thing today. Won't be anymore in only a matter of months. I'm a director and going for the M2 pro eyes closed.

Agreed. The only thing that will make me upgrade earlier from my 16-inch MBP is an Oled screen. Processing power/battery life is not an issue at all.

14” MacBook Pro M2Max 64GB 1TB SSD 30 core GPU Have always gone for the 1TB SSD option and then use cheaper external SSD storage. The 64GB option will give me plenty of headroom with memory now and for life of the MacBook. I tend to change every 6/7 years. Great video Mark and really informative

A year later I picked up a 14-inch M2 Max 30 GPU core with 32GB and 1TB for the equivalent of £1800. This "low" Max 14-inch model seems to have been totally shunned. I saved a bunch compared to the M3 I was looking at for £3500 (Although it did have 96GB and 2TB). Very happy. Thanks team!

I've got a 13 inch 2017 MacBook Pro with a dual core i5, 8GB and 256 GB. I'm upgrading in the next couple of weeks and it's going to be the 16 inch with the M2 Max with 38 GPU Cores, 32GB and 1TB. I'm using my laptop for video editing, music production and I've started using blender and after effects a couple weeks ago. That's when my current one said "f you" to me, I couldn't even render anything I made. Safe to say my minds about to be blown, I haven't been this excited for something in a long time.

Trying to watch different videos on this and this is the most useful yet. Very clear. I am a hobbyist but do a lot of woodworking imagining work, illustrator editing etc but like you say I really don’t mind if it takes just slightly longer to render. I’ve been working on an old 2017 and before that 2013 MacBook for ages so now it seems clear the m2 pro is for me. The only thing I still wonder about is for gaming. But then I have game consoles for that

I got the 16 inch 16gb, 1tb M2 Pro. I've never enjoyed working on a laptop (Photography) but sometimes I can't make the clients wait for me to go back to the studio and importantly can calibrate colours etc with a design team on a shoot. I'm impressed so far. Putting aside my prejudices it handles what I need it to in the field. I did consider going all in on it as a back up studio machine but made the first sensible decision on hardware in years. If they want it yesterday, as is often the case, a few minutes out and about isn't going to hurt anyone. Unless they want me to go back to the studio where I have all the big toys and add days to the job?

Have just bought the M2 14 inch MacBook Pro (1TB) while in San Francisco. No queues, plenty of stock on all models. Overall £700 cheaper than in the UK including a student discount. Likely to keep this for years

Go for the Pro, but more importantly, the 14-inch! You'll love the portability, the screen, and since the performance is the same as the 16-inch it should not be a difficult decision. When in your office you can anyway hook it up to your desktop monitor.

Another great video, although I will be blaming you when explaining the credit card statement to my wife. I have just bought an Apple Watch Ultra based on one of your other videos. I has waiting for the M2 chip before upgrading my from my 2016 MacBook Pro and 2017 iMac, I want to go back to one machine. I am going for the 14 inch model and will spec a 1TB ssd. You have convinced me that I only need the Pro as I don’t do anything too intensive, I just can’t decide between the base 16GB memory and the 32GB. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I don’t want the memory to be a bottleneck for my otherwise powerful machine and I want it to last me a few years. I am hoping to pair it with an Apple Studio display the next time these are on the Apple refurb site.

I’m struggling over this question as a graphics hobbyist. It’s not the export speed that matters to me though (I can go do something else while I save a video). It’s the smoothness of applying effects (sometimes elaborate) in Resolve or FCP. Can you speak to any of that? For reference (I know this is pitiful), but I’ve been doing my hobby editing for the past two years on a 2015 Air! I’m going to replace it with something more appropriate, but I want to make the right choice. I’m unlikely to upgrade again until around 2030.

Just spend as much as you can comfortably afford. Given what you're coming from, it'll be a MASSIVE upgrade and you won't be disappointed. Don't overthink it.

Hi Mark, thanks for your video! I am hesitating to buy a refurbished Macbook 14'' M1 Max 10cc 64 Gb 2TB 32-core vs Macbook 14'' M2 Max 64 12cc Gb 2TB 30-core. Hearing about your video and all the throttle issue around M2, do you think a refurb M1 will be better and safest value or M2 would be best? I would get them for same price. My use case would be Logic Pro Orchestral Production, Mixing and Mastering as well as AI programming work as part of my job.

I just got the base M1 Pro with 1 TB of storage, and I'm still within the return window. I'm wondering if I should exchange it for the base M2 Pro with 1 TB of storage. It would be the exact same price. It might seem like a no brainer and multiple people have said I should return it. I just wonder if there is any downside to the new base M2 Pro? It's hard to find any reviews of it (everyone is reviewing the M2 Max right now) and I only have a week left in my return window.

I’d return, as it seems to only be an improvement except in regards to SSD throughput. The base model SSD is found to be technically slower during extreme scenarios (M1 pro 512gb>M2 pro 512gb) although M2 pro 512gb could be argued as more reliable, given fewer NAND chips? But 2 additional CPU efficiency cores seems to be helping in both power and efficiency based use cases (more battery life AND more overall power) I just ordered a Silver, double binned 10/16 14” w 32gb memory & 2tb SSD. Replacing my 2014 13” Retina

You just won't notice much of a difference if you;'re only interested in the base model. You're probably not aware of the fact that Apple gimped the SSDs on the m2 pro base units. You get 2 NAND chips, instead of the 5 on the m1 pro base units (14 and 16). The performance boost may well be more than offset by the 30% slower SSD speeds. Be smart, like was said by another, go for the m1 pro, if you're only interested in the base config.

I just use for office works and in Mac OS mail i have over 2 mio mail and I have 16 inch m2 max and 14 inch m2 pro and both started indexing a week ago and when I search most common word I see ove 5000 results m2 max but m2 pro only 2100 maybe gives an idea

Few people seem to be mentioning this, but, by classic apple standards these days, they reduced the SSD performance by around 30% on the base 14 and 16 inch macbook pro's, which is just ludicrous. Instead of the 5 nand chips on the m1 pro base models, there are only 2 on the m2 pro units. Others mentioned how it can make a 3 minute render on the m1 pro, a 4 minute one on the m2 pro. It would be great if you cover this because as of now it seems to be a niche.

With the CPU cores, it seems that one of the main differences between the M1 and M2 versions is that the M1 Pro and M1 Max had just 2 efficiency cores, whereas the M2 Pro and M2 Max have 4 efficiency cores, the same number as the regular M2 (which should mean even better battery life) Ive already decided I won’t be getting one (i might get an M2 Pro Mac Mini, assuming apple don’t release a new Mac Studio between now and when i am able to get one, but I won’t be getting an M2 Pro or M2 Max MacBook Pro), mainly due to the cost (and i don’t really need a high performance portable computer)

I do 4k music videos, about 4 mins long, need it to render smoothly without choking the laptop.. but not longer than 15mins for a 4 min video, will the pro with 16gb be enough?

I can't think of one use case for the fully specced out variant, neither do I see any software taking advantage of the capabilities. Waste of money, and only megalomaniacs will buy it. Apple under Cook has a tendency to churn out products that either overlap with each other, or make little sense to begin with. Oversaturated product lineup.

After Effects or Cinema 4D VFX or motion design work in advertize and movie business can easily put these high end specs down. For example. You never get enough power when it comes to professionnel pipeline. The more power, the less time you spend, the more money you save. These machines are meant for print/video/animation pros. The Max chip for graphists. The Pro chip for editors, directors, producers... The mac book Air for general consumers. The Mac Book "Pro" line up is aptly named after all...

Bought the 16 inch m1 pro on a large discount brand new, and am more than glad i didn't waste £2699 on the 16 inch m2 pro base config, as yeah you probably didn't guess, Apple gimped the base SSD speeds.

Sadly, apple doesn't make quality hardware for NORMAL people. M2 Pro isn't necessary for most of the audience (not to mention max) but many features that come with them - are.

I think, if someone has a bunch of money without to worry about the rest of the month, they would buy the highest configuration of an 16 and/or 14 inch. I would do that. Of course an IPAD too
