Simulation of M26E1 tank projectile hitting turret edge armor of Tiger II tank.
90mm T33E7 AP (10.9kg) at 910 m/s vs 185mm RHA at 10 degrees.
90mm T54 gun muzzle velocity - 975 m/s. 910 m/s refers to a distance of approximately 0.75 km (for T33 AP).

The 90mm with T33E7 packed quite a heavy punch and no wonders it went through the area where two sides are welded together That is by far the weakest point because it can tear the welds and the shell can become like a wedge
@doggofroggo9117
@doggofroggo9117 10 месяцев назад
If welded right the welds should be strong than the metal itself but then again that was produced 80 ish years ago so things can change and welds could have been weaker.

@@doggofroggo9117 Mind you that late war steel used on German tanks was bad as well as generally production quality therefore a need for simple things It wouldn;t be as bad as Soviet weldings of course,non the less a simple crack can be detrimental

@MrTrool323 I assume since they needed more tanks that they over looked and rushed things so I believe you are right that those welds would be a weak point.
@nerd1000ify
@nerd1000ify 10 месяцев назад
@@doggofroggo9117 The weld filler material is usually stronger than the base material, but on heat treated parts like tank armour the heat affected zone around the weld will result in the overall welded structure being weaker than a solid piece of the base material- basically the heat of welding messes up the heat treatment of the armour plate. This also assumes they did full penetration welds. Usually to achieve that you'd have to Vee out a whole heap of material so you can build up weld filler to the full depth of the joint. Which they might have avoided, in part to minimise the heat affected zone.
@doggofroggo9117
@doggofroggo9117 10 месяцев назад
@nerd1000ify they could have also done it to increase production because they were already behind so that would make a lot of sense that they didn't weld properly

Hello Dejman. I'm a huge fan of yours and I have a video idea that is both interesting and has great potential. As you probably already know there is a Ukrainian brand of ERA called Nizh. I don't know about this simulation thing but I'm pretty sure it is hard to simulate it and maybe all of the knowledge about it can be still classified. But I'm sure if the video comes up about the Nizh it will be great and it'll get a lot of views.

On a latewar Tiger II the welds on that section would probably shatter, there were M26 crews saying how the shell wouldnt always penetrate but the force of the impact would shatter the welds and in some extremely rare cases the plate would break away.

theres very few people that understand how powerful the 90mm guns really were in their time, like 88mm guns that the tigers had were scary but if a enemy tank had a 90mm gun there was shit all your tank could do to survive a hit from a beast round that big moving that fast. and this shows how much ass is behind 90mm guns, that AP round while yes is AP went through the turret cheek, it broke a weld and still went through, the Tiger II (B) (this type of Tiger) is very well known for being so hard to kill or even damage. i dont want to image what a 90mm APHE round would do to the inside of that turret.

actually talking about solids vs APHE, most of them did pretty same damage which led to replacement by APDS/APFSDS with no filler. exception is Soviet shells which had specific filler, while lacking piercing and having bigger chance of ammo blast when hit. at least they had enough boom to fully erase German crews especially with 122mm

The T33 is the successor to the M77 and was used in the M26 Pershing. The Super Pershing used the T33 under a different name. After the war, a new metallurgy and hardening level of T33 was tested and it is T33E7. The final version of the T33E7 was the M318 standard for the M46 Patton.
