Part 2: • M272 Balance Shaft Rep... Not a complete walk-through, but some tips that should save you a good deal of time if you attempt this repair yourself.
I've talked a few people out of buying a MB. When I explain this issue and how they treated their customers, these potential buyers changed their minds and went with other car makers. MB must have bribed the judge in the class action lawsuits filed against them, they got off without paying for damages.. They were totally at fault - 100%. Not a shadow of a doubt. I'm done with them. Lesson learned.
This Just happened to my 06 R350. 70K miles. 3800 for repair. Collecting info help on how do this myself. Likely a year long project for me. Lucky I have a 2nd MB, likely to develop the same issue.
I replaced an engine on a c230 a few days ago ( no balance shaft here, just a chunk of piston inside the intake, or maybe a valve cuz they drove it so long with a bad balance shaft. anyways whenever i pulled the engine, i removed the fan and upper radiator support. i pulled the engine and transmission out together with all the accesories attached.. it seeems like i saved a ton of time by doing it that way..
Nice job. Can improve by reduce the camera motion meaning slowly move the camera possibly attach the camera to a long object to help you from flying from panning from one side to another side. Use of tripod is great, it gives the viewer and camera chance to focus on the subject. Move the tripod as you finish each segment.LIGHT is awfully important, use a natural light if possible or attach a light to your camera if not available. Write up what you want to say and what you are going to show (record) before starting so you do not wonder during recording. Again it was great and I know you can make it better
There is a potential that Mercedes Benz will be covering the cost for this defect. The specific details should become available in the coming days or weeks. I believe a California judge has determined MB liable in a class action suit very recently. This is different that the one filed in New Jersey in 2011 where the judge ruled in favor of MB. My '06 C230 may have this problem. My OBD reads P0016, P0017. Now it's just a matter of checking the oil pan and cam alignment to know for sure. Check online with your VIN to see if it is on the list and hope you have under 125K miles. It will probably be a sliding scale on the amount you will be allotted.
Thanks for great video! I’m doing my m273, and looks everything good, except I can’t get timing marks in perfect line especially on right bank. Copper links are in place. I was suggested that my one or both exhaust sprockets lost tension due to removal of chain tensioner without locking sprockets. I used nails for locking. How do I test it? Any advice on timing?
Just watched a similar vid- he replaced the water pump and a plate with a seal that goes I think on the rear of engine--I cant say much for MB quality and design for longevity
will this happen to an engine with 32k on it. I bought a replacement motor for a e350 that had 164k on it from a salvage that had 32k on it but when I got the engine in, it had a tick in it. the oil was very clean because when I replaced the rear seal, the pan was very clean.
Excellent - thanks for sharing. How did you get the engine out? What did you do around the transmission? Anyone know if this same removal method can be used for an ML350?
Engine removal was pretty easy. Most of the bellhousing bolts were accessible from the top and there are 6 bolts connecting the torque converter to the flywheel. This car is rear wheel drive, so I would imagine the ML might be harder to remove.
Aloha! Very informative video! appreciate it! The only negative review I've heard about the C230 is the "balance shaft" happening between 60-80k. I'm about to buy a C230 at just about 60K, how can I tell if this is beginning to happen?? Also, you being an owner, what are other flaws you've found about the C230 and how is the power? Please let me know, Mahalo!
i think the new balance shaft will never fail is because the old balance shaft was not correctly heat treated so over years it will shear slowly until the chain slip
I have problems with my 04 CLS 350 W219. Pretty sure the same problems that go around the same engine models, engine light coming up, rough gear change from 1-2, 2-3. Sometimes after a long fast drive, when stopping at a traffic light it will suddenly goes into a crazy wobbly idle. Checked in the computer, says some misfiring in chamber 3 or something. Im guessing its the balance shaft too. It would be too costly for me to send it out to my workshop, is it possible for me to do it myself?
HI my GL500-2012 after 30minute if I turn my vehicle off and start again it will start cranking very week and delay for the engine to start (note that when the engine is cold everything is ok) please advice
Auto Lover, i guess it might be possible to remove the shaft from the rear, but it wouldn't save you any time or effort anyway and you need to replace the oil pump which means you have to pull the engine. The BS might sit too high to remove it with the engine installed and I would hate trying to work on the front of the engine with it in the car.
Is there anyway to get this job done without taking the engine out? I have an 06 E350 at about 100k miles, still no problems but my intake manifold actuator lever is broken....😂
How often does the replaced balancer shaft go out? I am considering buying one of these vehicles, but if the balancer is a continuous problem I might want to stay away from it
Yes. If the Engine # falls within the bad balance shaft range, avoid. Run in the other direction. Do not buy. I have my engine on a stand in my garage looking very much like this guys motor. If it's not the engine, it will be the transmission, which cost me $4500 to repair after owning the car for 6 months.
1 Leg 2 Wheels supposedly the problem was bad heat treating and the replacements were properly hardened. I got tired of not being able to get parts in general and sold the car. The turbine speed sensor is another common problem that i paid a grand to the dealer because they had to replace the whole valve body. General rule is if you cant afford a new one, dont buy a used german car.
This is an important question no one has answered yet. I've been combing through the net to figure it out. If you know the answer contact me at OptimisticPrimate7@gmail.com
Daily Inspiration just enough for it to line up the split portion. Its very stiff. The cam timing is set by dots that line up as described in the video.
For to mention that there was a national Class action suit that you could have gotten some financial help. Too late now though in anyone reads this comment. Here is the website: topclassactions.com/lawsuit-settlements/closed-settlements/86803-mercedes-engine-defect-class-action-settlement/
Just rebuild the entire engine, keep it straight and simple. Cost more up front but so much more worth the mind set. Yes, I have a 06 M272 and yes Im completely rebuilding my engine. If your replacing your oil pump because of metal in the oil, wouldn't that tainted oil full metal have pumped through your crank and rod bearings? Sometimes being crafty and blaming the dealership doesn't help you not sound cheap.
Because you have to unbolt the counter weight at the back of the engine which requires disconnecting it from the transmission. You also need to change the oil pump. Removing the engine is a lot easier than doing the job with it in the car.
Hey Sick Speed, I need to do this repair on my 06 R350 i'm not a mechanic outside of easy stuff starters alternators stuff like that. Austin TX Mercedes wanted 11k to fix mine has 160K on the clock tho. I found a shade tree guy certified mechanic that will try it, I found replacement balance shaft from this site www.ecstuning.com/ES2594876/ but its just the shaft and two counterweights, I heard you say replacing the oil pump is necessary and the timing chain, cant seem to find reference to necessary parts to replace do you have a list of things any help is greatly appreciated
There are about 15-20 part numbers you will need, including gaskets, seals, a new chain tensioner, a new chain, an oil pump and a pickup. Sorry Ive been slacking on this parts list, Ill try to get on it.
I'd hate to work for a company like Mercedes Benz that lies to its customers like they do. They lied about this issue for years, and still are. But that's not all, I just talked to a tow guy that said even newer MBs were failing everywhere and leaving people stranded. He should know, he tows them for a living.
That’s probably a guy who can’t afford to buy one. Those are usually the only people who talk trash about German cars. So nahhhh mb pretty solid. They obviously recalled it that’s how we know about the issue to begin with.
