Great video for video for someone attempting this at home. I picked up a lot for myself. Few pointers from doing this myself. ( still in process....if it starts and runs... i'll post my /pictures/videos. ) 1.) Don't need to remove heads or covers to change out the Balance shaft. It's extra work but, not as much as cleaning and prepping heads and covers. 2.) If you do end up removing the heads for cleaning and or valve work, the chain will slip off of it's locations if it's not supported correctly when flipping the engine to it's upright position.

Had the balance shaft start to go out on my 06 r350, so I got the engine from a 2010 GLK350 and replaced it, about to buy an 06 c350 with a bad engine, and replace the balance shaft on the m272 from my r350 and put it in there, I believe if I pin and remove the cam gears this should be a pretty straight forward job

A perfect example of an over engineered engine Nothing's better than a good LT4 pushrod engine, light, simple, low center of gravity, dependable, easy to fix and mod and inexpensive parts, just to name a few of its advantages.
@eddiepadilla1078
@eddiepadilla1078 6 лет назад
My first build was a 305 out of a 69 nova; Id have to disagree with you. Typically a simpler system should have fewer moving parts. A overhead cam with nothing but an hydrolic tappit depressing the valves is simpler while adding a noticeable gain in performance. Any motor can be modified. The engine is extremely easy to build. The only thing you could mix up are the impulse wheels that are used by the system to monitor the position of each cam. Other then that you could get away with not marking anything and reassemble without any troubles. Plus, i prefer the superior gasket quality offered by silicone.
@francoisd6942
@francoisd6942 6 лет назад
The advantage of an engine is its symplicity. Why 4 valves and 4 cams, 5 miles of timing chains. Push rod engines now have the cam advance and can achieve the same horsepower, torque and gas milage as DOHC. They build DOHC engines because they put the idea in the buyers head that they were superior, this is bullshit. The C7 does the Nurburgring in 7:16, better than any Lambo or Ferrari and the CTS-V beats any Mercedes and BMW
@eddiepadilla1078
@eddiepadilla1078 6 лет назад
François D i hear you about the comparative lengths of chains but if we examine your statement of simplicity then the m272/273 has eliminated 66% of thr complexity within the valvetrain by taking out the lifter/push rod/rocker arm mechanism. Additionally, if you wanted to add additional valves to the system then the process becomes more efficient because the lobes are spread out on multiple cams as opposed to trying to fit everything on one cam. Additionally, by varying the realitive position of each cam individually the motor can more accurately adjust the variable valve timing.
@rossguy6601
@rossguy6601 5 лет назад
Have you worked on this engine before? They are NOT easy... Plus there are many tools and one time use parts that add to the required procedures and total repair cost. Let's say you need to retime because youre a tooth off... $110 tensioner goes in the trash. As for the complexity, They have more than made up for it with the VVT system that does not tolerate any debris. Don't get me wrong I love MB engines, but Francois D is correct in terms of simplicity, power and gas mileage. (unless youre talking about the horrendous cylinder cancellation system on the GM engines). I do not however agree that DOHC is inferior at all. Just a different solution.

4 things in this video i have questions about 1) Why does the weight on the end of the balance shaft need to be replaced. Some say the shaft and the weight have to be matched. If that is so how is it that you can buy the weight separately? 2) The pulse wheels were to be replaced " because the pins/studs can be sheared off if used a 2nd time" . Don't understand that if the pins are still there and in tact and insert properly. The torque on these is enough to hold these pulse wheels in place. 3) The Chain Tentioner "Must" be replaced because it cannot be reset. Wrong, with a vice and some small tools it can be reset. 4) You must buy 20+ dollar sealer for the gaskets. This I can understand for the valve/cam cover because it has some technical issues (like holding the cam in place) that makes sense, but for the timing cover, pan , thermostat, water pump gasket it would seem that Aircraft Form a Gasket would work fine. This issue of always saying these MUST be replaced with no explanation is irritating and makes me think Mercedes just wants to make MORE money on the blunder they caused.

Personally, I would invest in a arbor press if you already don't have one. But, I used 8d nails to lock the cam sprockets and studs as alignment dowels for the timing cover. The only tool I needed to buy was an swiveled e8 on a 1/4 drive. Everything else is up to your skill level. Hone your skills or pay the professionals is your insecure.

We need to torque them to specifications. Good idea but what are the specifications? I bought new bolts and the specifications that came with them say 1=20nm, 2=40nm, 3=90deg, 4=40nm, 5=90 deg, 6=90 deg. I don´t get it, after step 3 to torque to 40 is meaningless as the torque is already way above. Shall I loosen them and start all over again or what?

@eddiepadilla1078 6 лет назад
Fidelis Kaspa if you havent started then youll need to invest, if you dont have, a load leveler to go with your engine hoist. That will allow you to pivot the engine during removal and installation. There are the usual thing to lookout for as with any engine removal--make sure all wires and hoses are disconnected and out the way. If you remove just the motor make sure you unbolt and disconnect the transmission lines as they are bolted to the motor next to the oil pan bolts.

I'm building same engine so I get an issue the right side sprockets they not forming a line and all my marks in the crankshaft and the balance shaft and the left side sprocket they timed perfectly? And I am suspecting the right exhaust variable valve timing maybe it wound? Please can you tell me what do you think. by the way after pulling the crankshaft take the Slack easthill not forming a line.
@eddiepadilla1078
@eddiepadilla1078 6 лет назад
Karim Zemiri it sounds like before your problems you removed the right side camshaft. When you installed the right side camshaft the timing marks were aligned perfectly just like the left side camshaft, the crankshaft and the balance shaft. When you rotated the engine two complete rotations to check timing alignment you noticed that the right side camshaft was no longer aligned between exhaust and intake sprockets. If my understanding is correct then yes i do believe youre correct to suspect a faulty right side intake sprocket. It sounds like the sprocket no longer has the proper and appropriate tension which is leading to your issue.

ef4doorvtec im not sure. There is a port that has a hex bolt that screws into a very small housing; and, the housing is bolted to the timimg cover via two external torx bolts. It sits just beneath and to the left(driver side) water pump. But im not sure if it lines up or gives you access to the balance shaft sprocket. I had the same concerns and ended up doing a mock fit 3 times before i mated the cover to the block with silicone. You can check that first but if it doesnt work out then at some point youll have to trust your work.

@eddiepadilla1078
@eddiepadilla1078 2 года назад
Yes, you can pressurize the cylinders with air to hold the valves in-place as you replace the stem seals but I would not exceed 5 psi if you do that. Before you go that route you what to check your compression first to ensure you dont have blowby that is leaking oil into your intake as leaky stem seals typically manifest as a blue tined smoke exiting the exhaust, whereas, excessive blowby will manifest as excessive oil in the intake/pcv system. Hope this helps.

When you change the oil it is a good idea to let the oil settle and pour out the last of the oil on a flat surface while looking for small flakes of metal. Its not as much a question of at what mileage does the failure occur, but gently driven M272 engines seem to escape a lot of the damages seen here. Save your old oil and inspect it for metal flakes.

It can be a bit difficult if you tried to install the cover without the gears because the chain gets in the way and the last thing you want is a lightly oiled chain touching a clean, degrease mating surface with a bead of silicone--good way to compromise your gasket if not.

Thanks for showing the timing procedure. In M273 V8 engine there is no blance shaft because there is no need of balancin cross plane V8 with natural 90degree V angle, int this place there is only gear that tennsions timing chain. The balance shaft is only in M272 V6 engines whres Mercedes applied unnaturla V angle 90 degree and too soft steel for timming gears
@existentiallychallenged5068
@existentiallychallenged5068 2 года назад
That is true, but the 273 V8 has an “idler gear” in the same location (just the sprocket without the internal balance shaft), which suffered from the same wear issue as the balance shaft sprocket. Sadly, since it’s based on the 272 V6, the same thing happens when it fails, the chain can skip, stretch, and wreck the valve train.
@defalt45
@defalt45 11 месяцев назад
@@existentiallychallenged5068 Exactly. M273 is just M272 with 2 extra cylinders. There was no inherent need for the idler gear, but not putting one would have needed designing a whole new engine

Assuming the letter W would the arrow be in the middle of that W like V^V the symbol ^ would be the arrow that is at the end of the R.

Man you are awesome, thank you for replying!! Couple of last questions if you may! I have the M273 engine with the idler sprocket instead of the balance shaft. I have the 4 markings on the chain for each sprocket, the one by the idler gear I can’t find anything to line it up to on the gear itself. It is just touching the idler gear though, is that good enough? And when you assembled the engine, you connected the chain to the crankshaft gear and then installed the timing cover. When moving the chain up top to line up the links on each sprocket. How would verify that the chain is still connected on crankshaft gear in the right place and has not moved?
@eddiepadilla1078
@eddiepadilla1078 Год назад
@@mohamedzeineldin4998 if you have an idler sprocket and no mass to counterbalance then the idler is there only to help direct the chain and doesn't need to be timed. You will need to rotate the engine 2 complete revolutions and recheck the all the timing marks. You can still see the chain with the timing cover installed as long as the harmonic balancer is not installed.

Wow. I replaced a clutch in a Fiat Spyder when I was a kid and ah remember that the lowest point on that car was the oil pan only less than a foot from concrete. That was pretty simple but need to jack the engine up a bit to do it. This process is clearly beyond my tolerance level. It seems like the M272 is of poor design. Why would the chain hang in my opinion? The chain needs to react to stressors I assume but keeping it inline per a lifecycle of an engine seems poor design per my take on it. Yes, I have the M272 balance shaft repair per 77K miles on my SLK 350. I'm hoping MBUSA will do something. Its clearly a problem with that engine at that time. A class action suit was launched that paid for most repairs but I'm beyond the 10 year mark but with 77K miles. A 60K car should not be toast at 77K miles. It just seems to me that replacing the balance shaft would not repair damage made by metal fragments circulating throughout the engine. MB also suggested the same when I learned of the class action effort years ago. A new engine would be needed. They also suggested that we do not see many of those models around anymore.

@eddiepadilla1078
@eddiepadilla1078 6 лет назад
Fakrul Azhar if the misfires went away and you did not prime the engine first then it was most likely the lack of oil pressure--the motor uses the oil pressure to adjust the cams while running. As for the loud exhaust, there are two nuts pressed into each the manifold that should be replaced durning the rebuild; you also want to replace the bolts too.
