The single biggest problem is Apple is charging too much. Their ram and SSD upgrade costs turn people off and Apple doesn't seem to understand this.

They do understand it but they don’t care, people with that thought process are not their cash cow demographic, especially for those high end Mac models. It’s the equivalent of saying “Rolex is charging way too much for a watch thus putting off many people from buying them”.

Think of the cost of an reasonable Gen3 NVME Device (this should match performancewise) forthe cost of on upgrade from 256GB to 512GB you will get a 2 TB upgrade. Downgrading the ports in number and perfomance is also not a good idea. Increasing the price in the same rush also not good. The usual apple customer buys the macbook to match the colour of its watch and iphone and perhaps browse a few internetpages (there was still the intel mac more than enough), yes you can do some videoediting and photoediting on theses devices (but still on the the M1s) besides this genre WORKING on these devices is mostly a problem as the usual software packages do not exist in apple silicon NATIVE versions. And yes there are a lot of other professions than webdesigner, tiktok influencer or wedding photographer. E.G. Is there a NATIVE CAD Solution (industry accepted!) I think the bigger problem is a broad lock of professional solutions beside the media area. And every performance gain the made is (same in the PC area) pure synthetic and can't be transformed to equally more productivity. If your computer renders a video in half the time it does not mean that you now can produce double of content! All the other parts do take the same time than before. furthermore this rending can be done unsupervioned. So the computrer just waits longer for you to interact with you again.

Main problem is that It's long overdue for a new paradigm for memory and storage pricing. Base for 256/8 $1100-1400 - it's just not serious. As well as $200 for each minimal upgrade. People know how much memory costs. It's just so blatant and obvious, almost insulting. I even want to say “hey, Apple, can you deceive us somehow more cunningly?”

You guys need to check around more. All the major laptop vendors are charging $150-200 for the lowest memory upgrades and many of them start at 8GB. None of this is unique to Apple. They're basically charging similar prices to everyone else and starting with the same base configurations. I'll give the example of the Microsoft Surface Laptop 5. It's base model is... 8/256. They charge $200 to go from 8GB to 16GB. Hmm.

You know that how much is the memory, but you don't know that they are nowhere near the 200GB/s transfeer speed? Even if you buy 2 piece of DDR5 and use it with dual channel, it's still only reach 105GB/s.. so you can complain about the SSD price too.. it's also have smaller capacity and it's "only" faster like the HDD..

I agree - the target audience are all those still on intel machines. No pro user with a well configured M1 or M2 should feel the need to switch. (And that is usually the audience who preorder those things) I just got my son a base M1 Air for school because his intel broke down. And then there is no real, well groundbreaking benefits with the M2/M3, even the performance jump is mehh. I agree. Pricing and configurations are what is hurting sales the most. Retail price of RAM in Q3 2020 when the M1 Air was introduced was $2.70-$3.00 per GB. Today it’s half that. But Apple is still putting 8GB in base configurations and charging $200/8GB. It was an outrageous premium in 2020, getting $25 worth of RAM for $200. Today, it’s $13 worth for the same $200. Apple is charging $15x retail prices. Similar, story for SSD storage. Still have 256GB base models, and charging $200 for upgrade to 512GB, then $200/512GB above that. Current retail price for similar performing m.2 SSDs is about $70/TB ($35/500GB). Apple is charging ~6x that. Base prices and configurations haven’t changed either, except for the processor. 3 years of declining RAM and SSD prices, not a bit of change from Apple.

Problem #11 - There are still a few of us out here who are still (happily) using Intel-based Macs to run software that won't run on the M-Series. I noticed several comments in the "Scary Fast" keynote with speed comparison to Apple "Intel machines" as though to coax holdouts to switch and add to Apple's bottom line. While Apple insists there's no Rosetta for 32-bit-meanwhile 32-bit apps WILL run on Windows 11 out of the box. This long-time Mac user is-believe it or not-thinking of switching to Windows to upgrade RAM and SSDs, and Nvidia support for 3D, AR/VR, (Apple get over the spat with Nvidia)-and then emulating the Mac for Mac-specific apps. My 2015 15" MacBook Pro has 16Gbof RAM and new 4tb SSD for just $200. To match that internal storage on the M-Series is a $2000 up-charge. Um, no. And I don't want an external SSD hanging around like a dongle all the time.

When the M1 family was made, the prices for each device were "reasonable" for Apple's standards and the lineup was great. Now, they are just getting greedy. Creating more confusing lineups just to upsell the expensive models while prices are increasing for non-US countries. I'm still going strong with my M1pro and probably not gonna upgrade for a long time until maybe that rumored 12inch comes out or anything that has a compelling price. 200USD for a 16GB ram upgrade is just stupid. Problem #4 is not that the M1 is good enough, it is that Apple has not extended performance significantly beyond the initial benefits of the architectural change. As seen in PC space, gen on gen improvements typically are pretty minor. In Apples case, there was a lot of fluff about devoting silicon to improved ray tracing performance - which no one cares about.

Although i was very happy with the power efficiency of my M1 MacBook pro, I recently switched to a Lenovo i7 pro with Intel 13900 and NVIDIA RTX 4090 laptop. I bought that laptop so that I wouldn't have to have a separate laptop and desktop because I like to game, and although there are pros and cons to both MacOS and Windows, I still slightly prefer Windows overall. If Apple would do the following, I would change back to Mac: - Make it suitable to play games (they seem to go in this direction, they just need to make a deal with Steam and/or Epic and/or key game developing companies) -Make a chip that can compete with Nvidia on graphics (even if it's expensive, I would pay extra for having similar performance but much more efficiency and less heat and noise) Some nice to have extras: - Improve the keyboard (the Lenovo types much better) - Round off the edge of the palm rest (the sharp edge digs into your wrist) - Get rid of the notch (Lenovo has an outward notch that is much more practical as it also makes opening it easier) - implement Face ID (although the fingerprint scanner is already good) - Finally, finally offer window snapping and overall better window management without 3rd party apps. Apple is so far behind Microsoft on this it isn't even funny - Improve the Finder and make it more like Windows Explorer The biggest competitive edge Apple has in my view is the efficiency of its chipsets. The same performance on battery as plugged in with no noise and heat is just amazing. Combined with the good build quality and items like screen, speakers, microphone, webcam, it is an attractive product. If only you could use all that power to also play games, you wouldn't still also need a Windows machine.

I think a lot of people are waiting to see the tests. Apple usually seeds a few unit to very big creators to show and test a day or so before to drum up hype. I love my M1 Max MacBook Pro 16 but I tried a friends M2 Max and it was snappier in audio production so I am really considering upgrading to the M3 family but I'm not going too until I see some tests to see how my M1 Max stacks up to the M3 Pro and M3 Max. My girlfriend on the other hand pre-ordered the regular M3 14 inch just for the Mini-LED screen and she has the M2 13 inch MacBook Air but she wanted the MacBook Pro screen. But comparing the M1 Max to the regular M3 isn't really going to tell me anything so I need to see some creators I trust do some tests before I spend $4000 on a new laptop.

Yep, I agree. Until content creators see actual, real-world production results with the M3 instead of "leaked" stats and often unreliable "benchmarks" they are going to hold off on purchasing them. So far most of the hands-on reviews have been terribly lacking because Apple only gave out early ones mostly to people that aren't going to show real results and instead focus on the black color and fingerprints which no one serious cares much about compared to actual production tests. Not to mention greedflation is making a lot of people tighten budgets. Before people spend many thousands they are going to make sure the speed bump is enough of a boost in productivity for a solid ROI. Who wants an expensive lump of tech for creating content in a dire economy where many average Americans are barely keeping their heads above water? When a huge amount of boomers are going homeless due to greedflation that we haven't seen since the Great Depression, go figure that many are getting worried that the bottom might be falling out and can't justify spending thousands of dollars on a gamble.

No, not having new design change or lack of new features are NOT the problems. The MAIN problem is the ridiculous pricing and options. Another for M3 PRO 12-Core CPU & 18-Core GPU with 32GB Ram/1TB SSD for $1,999. And final option of M3 MAX 14-Core CPU & 30-Core GPU with 64GB Ram & 2TB SSD for $3,199. Snazzylabs talked about this in his video. It had something to do with the way the memory channels are (figuratively) wired to the CPU/GPU cores on the SOC. So the chips with cut down CPU/GPU cores physically cannot access some of the RAM channels even if a RAM chip were to be soldered into it, because certain RAM channels correlate with certain CPU/GPU cores.
@ahaimes6320
@ahaimes6320 7 месяцев назад
There was technical reasons why the extra bandwidth was not needed. Apple is constantly varying the architecture as it discovers the limitations and workings. It has nothing to do with cost-savings; that is just flexing by the usual complainers.
@michaelkhalsa
@michaelkhalsa 7 месяцев назад
It has to do with supply chain and economics as larger capacity memory chips become available. And yes the 300 g-bits / sec can become saturated under certain conditions. The latency also plays a role in this. LDPPR5 Ram can use 400 g bits/ sec as is. Since , outside of the Ultra, the bus is only connecting the SOC and ram, i think it is engineered for that.

I am running a 2011 17-inch MacBook Pro. I ordered an M3 Max 16-inch MacBook Pro. I'm not sure why we are pretending no one will buy this. It's clear even Apple marketed M3 to Mac users on Intel chips and not users on M2. They also did the comparisons to M1 for that reason cause they don't expect people using M2 chips to be in the market to upgrade. As for the release cycle, they wanted M2 in October 2022, but they missed the release schedule. That's why it came out in January. Apple doesn't release new products in December, so they pushed it out to 2023. Now they are back on track. So, M4 will be announced in October 2024. M5 in October 2025, and so on.

I have heard some specutlation that the M3 is actually the M2 processor everyone thought we were going to get but the 3nm production ran into some hiccups so Apple fell back to a marginally faster 5nm for the M2 products. TSMC solved the yeild issue and had previously reported significant production volume of 3nm processors in 2H 2023 - so it is likely that the M3 & M3 Pro processors are seeing much higher production yeilds and the M3 Max's additional comlexity as well as development for the M3 Ultra are constraining that line of processors.

The only thing I don’t know right now is, if I should go for the maxed out M3 Max with 64GB Ram or the maxed out M3 Pro 36GB ram. I will definitely need to use parallels, because most of my programs don’t run MacOS. What do you guys think? For me, the problem is the working time of Macbook Pro M3 Pro, which is only 18 hours, which is 4 hours less than M3 and M3 Max and the famous 22 hours.

Should I Upgrade My 2017 12 inch MacBook ?

I'm waiting for reviews on the M3 processors as I plan to replace my current Windows laptop. Looking at the current prices in my country, I'm considering two options: a brand-new MacBook M1 Pro (10 cores) with 16GB RAM and a 1TB drive for approximately $2,101 or a MacBook M3 Pro (11 cores) with 18GB RAM and a 512GB drive for about $2,777. Currently, I use a Mac Mini M1 (8 cores) with 16GB RAM and a 512GB drive as my desktop and am completely satisfied with its performance. Therefore, while I'm sure the M1 Pro would be adequate for my needs and save me some money, the M3 Pro seems like a safer bet for the future.
