The M203 40mm grenade launcher has been an integral part of our military arsenal since its design in 1968. The M203 was a replacement to the single shot, break open M79 which, while affective, meant a grenadier only carried a single weapon. Allowing the grenade launcher to be attached to a carbine or full length rifle allowed the grenadier to also be a rifleman, which ultimately helped changed its doctrinal use and the munitions available to carry. High Explosive, flechette, buckshot/ beehive, parachute flare, Smoke, and the M781 chalk rounds are but a few of the munitions available for use. 37mm launchers are readily available as type 1 firearms, but the 40mm is a registered destructive device under the NFA Act.
In this video the launcher is a LMT rail mounted launcher attached to a Colt Defense M4. The rounds fired are a M781 TPT training round and a beehive round that fires 18 .22 LR rounds simultaneously.
