I was offered an amazing opportunity to spend a day at the range with the Army's newest select fire battle rifle, the Sig MCX Spear, designated by the Army as the XM5. The Army recently announced its decision to adopt the XM5 as its newest rifle, eventually intended to replace the M4 and the 5.56mm cartridge.
The Spear started out as the MCX-MR in 7.62 during the SASS trials and ultimately lost out to the HK417 which eventually was rebuilt into the M110A1. Sig held onto the MR and when. theArmy began looking for a new mid range weapon, the MR was rebuilt into the SPEAR that you see here. Sig chambered it in its proprietary caliber the .277 Fury, which will see use in the military as the 6.8x51mm round. The 6.8 maintains better ballistic capabilities than. the6.5 and allows for more transfer of energy on target than the 7.62. This round, coupled with this rifle, will allow for greater lethality and survivability for our soldiers on the modern battlefield.
The rifle weighs 8.4 lbs, about the same as a Knight's Armament SR-25, and will come equipped with the Sig suppressor seen here, and specialized optic made by Vortex designated as the XM157m which features a 1-8 power scope with ranging capabilities as well as viable andIR light and laser. The rifle features. arear and side charging handle, and fires at a rate of fire of about 750-800 rounds per minute from a 20 round magazine. The rifle is well suited to both patrol and DMR use.
Special thanks to The HUB AZ for lending me this rifle to shoot.

Very cool to see something so new! Kind of interesting that Sig produces both the new service rifle *and* the new service pistol. Not really sure of the implications there, haha. Awesome video! Good to hear some information about the rifle and the whole thing with the US Army formally adopting it, that came as a total surprise to me. It kicks more than I expected, especially from a general service that's not expressly designed as a DMR or something similar to that. I didn't expect them to go with a round so much larger than the 5.56x45, or just something that much hotter.

@@LegacyArmsIntl bummer. Thanks as always for sharing. Esp a full auto version. Did u get a chance to see how the spent cases look at the interference between ss and the brass? I have a feeling this rifle will go the way of the M14 and eventually the Army will just go “How do we upgrade the M4 some more?” instead. I also see a lot of logistics issues arising from this new round as well. And lastly, going from a rifle that’s 33 inches long and about 8 lbs fully equipped to a rifle that’s 38 inches long and 13 lbs while fully equipped is a *terrible* idea. Especially when you remember on how Army infantrymen (particularly during the Iraq War) complained about how the M16A2 and A4 rifles were too long and heavy.
@purplepenguin43
@purplepenguin43 2 года назад
i see this a good scar replacement for the dmr guys, they were already using special ammo like 118lr or 77grain and as we get thermals and magnified optics on every soldier they might see ranges extend out far enough where you might actually want to carry this over an m4. its a good option to have but i think the optic will do better then the rifle, that vortex optic is something else. its basicly a lantirn pod in scope form.
@codyerickson3550
@codyerickson3550 2 года назад
@@purplepenguin43 I can see it being a DMR or a SCAR replacement as well. But I myself am still pretty skeptical about the Vortex optic. At least at a conscript level. What makes the ACOG and the Aimpoint so popular is the fact that they are simple: Any knucklehead can have one on their rifle and figure out how to use it and on top of that they’re rugged as Hell.

My theory is that at first they'll search for a way to make a magwell adaptor to allow them exchanging the barrel and bolt and continue using 5.56x45 from existing STANAG mags. Later they'll probably either switch back to the M4 or straight up adopt a 5.56x45 SIG rifle. This gun would be great for marksmen, but not so much for every single infantryman.

Exciting stuff. It would be quite the the feat if it's true as they claim it's not going to be a barrel burner with all that insane powder and pressure at 80K psi that's said to be more than 7.62 NATO or even the.50 BMG. It's quite ironic somewhat that with this new 6.8x51mm (.277 Fury) ammo the US/NATO has returned to something somewhat similar before with the .280 British which could have been the choice as the NATO round then instead of the 7.62x51mm. It remains to be seen how this will perform, against body armor, if it's going to be worth it against enemies that might not even have body armor anyways with all that added weight and recoil and decrease in ammo capacity. Some people suggest an AR-15 sized ammo might have been better, like the 6mm ARC, as the replacement for 5.56/M4 general assaulter's rifle, I don't really know but perhaps it would be more controllable as well as of course being smaller in size (more ammo) and lighter overall.

This guy in the video is clearly over 200 pounds, is an experienced shooter, and has to brace himself and lean way forward. They say this rifle is to go up against China or Russia. OK, if we're fighting Russia or China, that means a draft has probably taken place as well. Which means the military gets whoever they get, which includes smaller people with no experience at all with weapons. This is the WORST gun for that situation. Let's get real. They won't say it but this gun is for WW3. Which mean a draft. Which means you need a gun that's easy to learn and shoot.

So would you say that this rifle might set the precedent for a new trend of there being two kinds of riflemen in units? Like 3 battle riflemen and 3 automatic riflemen, with something like an IAR?
@LegacyArmsIntl
@LegacyArmsIntl 2 года назад
It’s possible. I think until it is fully fielded we will continue to see a change in doctrine and TO&E in units to account for the new rifle.

Everyone is talking about the recoil but it looks really similar to a 7.62X39 AKM. Is that an accurate comparison?

is it better in full auto than 80 yeas old FG42 regarding recoil? 7.92*57 mauser vs 6.8*51...

Can you resume: would you like to have this rifle during your service?
@LegacyArmsIntl
@LegacyArmsIntl 2 года назад
That’s a difficult question. I would have carried it as a special purpose weapon like a DMR rifle for a mission specific need. I just don’t see it being the right weapon for everyone. Instead of fielding it to every soldier as intended, I would issue it to 2-3 members of each squad to increase lethality within the squad.

honestly it just seems like the Mk17 (SCAR-H) when that entered service in Special Operations; I feel that this thing will be the successor to that but not anything standard issue to replace the M4A1

I carried a SCAR for a while and while it is a great rifle in many aspects, the light weight causes it to beat you up a bit in full auto fire. Never really fired it in anything other than semi because of that. Also, while there are a lot of aftermarket parts for the SCAR now, they didn’t exist when it was first fielded. The SPEAR is coming to the table with a lot of versatility and the ballistics of the 6.8x 51 are pretty good. Not as great as the 7.62 in some areas but far better than the 5.56 for distance and transfer of energy on target.

@@LegacyArmsIntl The ballistics of the 6.8x51mm seem to be better than 7.62x51mm in *ALL* areas as far as I can see.

Is the MCX-Raptor the SBR? Also can you do a review on the Gen 3 MCX? Weight wise I’d rather haul around a V Seven Weapons 16” 6.5 Creedmoor or a 12.5” 7.62x51 if I need a battle rifle. I mean we had the SCAR which was fantastic, not sure this is that much better than the SCAR 17 but this is very cool and the Sig Modularity makes sense.

Yeah, Raptor's the CQB model, I think it has somewhere between 8" and 10" of barrel.

WIth the suppressor on, how many mags can you go through before the action gums up?

Don’t forget he is shooting a less hot version of 6.8x51! The military will be using higher pressure rounds.

4:30 LMAO =))))))))))) "That's quite the rifle" xD I mean, M14 was quite the rifle, it looked beautiful, but uh, that 20rnd full auto man... the recoil is just so F***ing familiar and the rifle itself... it just reminds me of the early days of Vietnam, where GI's will learn how quite the rife XM5 actually is xD

Nice video! How’s this shoots compared to something like an FN SCAR 17, in terms of recoil? Thanks!
@LegacyArmsIntl
@LegacyArmsIntl 2 года назад
The Scar 17 is a lighter platform and so the perceived recoil is greater. This one felt similar to a .308 but slightly less rearward impulse. On semi auto fire it was very controllable.

I think it has a better chance at replacing 7.62mm NATO rifles than replacing 5.56mm rifles. Trying to replace the AR-15 in 5.56 with this seems like the M14 all over again. Heavier, with less capacity, more recoil, and you can carry much less ammo for it. Expecting a full powered rifle to replace a shortened assault rifle is not a new idea. That being said replacing the "accurized" M14 with this seems like a potentially good idea.
