That is probably what real grenade launchers sound like. They use a high-to-low pressure system, while this seems to be just using a charge of black powder in the shell. I'm not sure about that, but I'm assuming that's why it doesn't sound like a real grenade launcher.

I think the reason they make a "phump" sound i because there is a seal between round and the barrel, so as the round travels down the barrel it creates a vacuum within it, making it so that when it finally has left the barrel, air will fill the vacuum making a sound. Sort of the same way you blow on the lip of a bottle to make a sound.

I think it's still listed as a 40mm, either way that still uses a high/low pressure system. the gp25 is quite different from the NATO 40x43. there is a later system, that fires thermobaric grenades from a pump action system. in all cases the fuse requires rotation to arm.

It isn't hard to make explosive 37mm shells. Heck, the timing device on a 40mm uses the same technology in a beyblade toy.

+Dave Smith it's more difficult than first glance, even point detonation fuses won't work as the shells tumble in flight. technically anything is possible but some things are more difficult than they seem. Most shells for 37mm are pyrotechnic timed, just like firework shells. kinda hard to compare that to a real grenade launcher.

Well, the thing is, it looks like a grenade launcher, but it is technically a flare gun. Yes, it is a flare projector, not a grenade launcher. 37mm flare projectors and most flare projectors in general are exempted from the NFA. Now, if it has a propellant charge of more than 4 ounces? NFA restricted destructive device. If the device you project has an explosive charge of more than 1/4 ounces? NFA restricted destructive device. Legal loadings are noise effect (grenades), gas, and flares. Non-legal loadings are anti-personnel (rocks count as buckshot, knives and nails count as flechettes) loadings and other such NFA restricted destructive devices (without a tax stamp). You can of course just register and pay a tax stamp. Also, the can cannon counts as 5.56/.223 so that's legal.

Technically, anyone 21 or older and not in a shitty liberal state can register a DD. It just takes a $200 tax stamp and many months of waiting. I agree, he should do it. Individual grenades are DDs of their own and require magazine storage, but registering the launcher as a DD would allow launching all kinds of stuff from it. Nails, buckshot, rocks, you name it.

The main reason is because he is using black powder instead of smokeless powder. 40mm rounds are commonly reloaded by hobbyists using a 38 case filled with green/red dot powder or equivalent.
