Lady Macbeth’s subconscious gets the best of her in the “Sleep Walking” scene. Shakespeare uses the device of so little blood - a "damned spot” - to signify so much - "Yet who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him?” And again, because of the smell of this one "damned spot" - “all the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand.”
A scene from the 2015 Square Talk, in association with Apollo Arts, production of Shakespeare's Macbeth - directed by Nicolas Walker - featuring Ansley Braverman as Lady Macbeth.

LADY MACBETH: Yet here's a spot.
Doctor: Hark! she speaks: I will set down what comes from her, to satisfy my remembrance the more strongly.
LADY MACBETH: Out, damned spot! out, I say!--One: two: why, then, 'tis time to do't.--Hell is murky!--Fie, my lord, fie! a soldier, and afeard? What need we fear who knows it, when none can call our power to account?--Yet who would have thought the old man to have had so much blood in him.
Doctor: Do you mark that?
LADY MACBETH: The thane of Fife had a wife: where is she now?--
What, will these hands ne'er be clean?--No more o' that, my lord, no more o' that: you mar all with this starting.
Doctor: Go to, go to; you have known what you should not.
Gentlewoman: She has spoke what she should not, I am sure of that: heaven knows what she has known.
LADY MACBETH: Here's the smell of the blood still: all the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand. Oh, oh, oh!
Doctor: What a sigh is there! The heart is sorely charged. 60
Gentlewoman: I would not have such a heart in my bosom for the dignity of the whole body.
Doctor: Well, well, well,--
Gentlewoman: Pray God it be, sir.
Doctor: This disease is beyond my practise: yet I have know those which have walked in their sleep who have died holily in their beds.
LADY MACBETH: Wash your hands, put on your nightgown; look not so pale.--I tell you yet again, Banquo's buried; he cannot come out on's grave.
Doctor: Even so?
LADY MACBETH: To bed, to bed! there's knocking at the gate:
come, come, come, come, give me your hand. What's
done cannot be undone.--To bed, to bed, to bed!

Best monologue of “Out, damned spot” I have seen. I’ve watched a lot of different interpretations and I identify with this one the most. The fearfulness, the anger, the remorse and guilt. Very good 😊

Not quite the same as Francesca Annis, in Roman Polanski's 1971 film production of MacBeth, where she played Lady MacBeth, in the sleepwalking scene, entirely naked.

Thank you for your feedback! What is your favorite interpretation of Lady Macbeth?

@emmabennett3985 Год назад
Although this is a little harsh there is truth to it. I’ve never interpreted lady Macbeth as fearful and anxious. She meditated and thoughtful and psychopathic. I don’t belive she weeps but is more annoyed that she can’t wash away from her mind what has happened. I agree with you on this stamens but it could’ve been said in a nicer tone

@@emmabennett3985 Thanks for your comment, Emma! One thing about great drama is that it has universal appeal and is open to a multitude of expressions and interpretations. One theme in Macbeth that I encountered is the theme of remorse; felt by both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, and in this production we attempted to express that element. One way to see this is they both underestimated the effect the crime would have on their conscience, and that is exactly what conscience is for - to remind us of our wrongs. Of course in this case both of these characters' consciences are faulty; so they vacillate from remorse to anger to annoyance, defiance, etc.

@@nicolaswalker3937 I completely agree with this! Everyone is going to play a character in their own way and that is totally fine! And I totally agree with what you have said here
