Subscribed for your hilarious sense of humor infused with analysis. I was left unimpressed with Dune Part One because I didn't feel emotional connection to the characters. This time as well, but the increasing political intrigue caught my interest as well as the special effects and cinematography creating a high level of believability and immersion into this fantastic universe. But when Paul's character started roaring I was convinced he was overdubbed.

I'm glad your review gave me a few laughs. The movie, while it has many strengths, is relentlessly grim.

The summary statement of your review on Rotten Tomatoes Sir is something you are 100% bang on. "Character, you may think, is not the point of a story like this one - it’s myth-making, allegory - but without real people to care about, there’s a ceiling on how invested we can become." I havent watched Dune 2 yet going tonight. So how can I say that i am beyond convinced this is accurate? Ive avoided spoilers and actually most in depth reviews just getting tidbits. But one thing that eluded about Villeneuve's films is why is it do i feel like i'm watching a movie so technically well crafted but so emotionally cold? I felt this about Dune Part one and Blade Runner 2049, and Arrival. Only Prisoners did I care which funny enough he did not write. I used chat gpt to help me understand him and compared to other similar directors. Its what i've stumbled upon is this statement you've made is actually a description to Villenueve's films all of them. He is storyteller of esoteric and philosophical ideas and less on the human condition. His visual style is more aesthetic leaning and less atmospheric then he would like it to be, and considering his recent quote that he hates dialogue it would behoove him that he can achieve his style of cinema by having more visual storytelling to describe character traits and more importantly use the human condition to emphasize philosphical ideas, which I think might be difficult thing to do.

I think you're right. I'm interested in his journey toward "pure cinema", but I still want dimensionality in my characters, not just a sense impression of who they are and what they think. As you correctly observe, a very difficult balance to strike is you're a visual storyteller, working with conventional narrative, like Denis.

I watched it. You're quote still stands however I feel like i was conditioned to experience and enjoy the epic mythology and grandeur but not be distracted so i can be disciplined to focus on the characters as much as possible. So now that i wonder about your review as I write this, I'm at this moment coming to this conclusion: that as much characters that tethered in reality drive the greatest or quickest emotional investment, I do see an avenue where non relatable characters may still be empathetic enough if the themes and ideas that are espoused are riveting and complex enough which is what i experienced here but the degree of difficulty of reaching similar peaks of investment are much more difficult. Your thoughts?@@drmacclevoid

Also another thing you menioned dimensionality. Despite how impeccably crafted these two movies have been. It does not change my notion that the best medium for this source material is prestige tv a la game of thrones. @@drmacclevoid

I think in stories like this one, the characters are proxies for the themes, and for some, that's enough. It didn't detract from my enjoyment of the movie. In a movie like Star Wars, that's more an adventure, the characters are thin but they're arcetypes, rather than thematic proxies, and so you're left feeling you know them, which adds to the film's repeatability - its legacy appeal. I wonder if Dune's long-term appeal will come from fans of the novel who can fill in the blanks when it comes to characterisation, because they know the source novel. The long-term appeal for those who know it as a movie is less certain, I think. But it's a wonderful spectacle - well-made, grandiose. But so is Nelson's column.

Touche beautifully articulated. Thats actually what i was wondering about; familiarity of archetypes allows for rewatchability vs character thematic conduits is more niche.@@drmacclevoid
