Machi Koro: Bright Lights Big City Review - with Tom Vasel 

So I could take my original that I got recently, separate them into 6 or less, 7+ and special buildings, then do a 5 5 2 set up but add if you roll that you don't get a matching number, you get a coin any way. Sounds like a plan to me.

Some misinformation in the comments about what changes in the new version. The new game does a good job at balancing the (previously broken) 1 die strategy, fixes the too much randomness issue with the expansions, and nerfs the tuna boat. Forces the 5-5-2 layout. Updates the radio tower (reroll dice) with the moon tower (roll 3 keep 2), making this useless for the 1 die strat Changes the convenience store (3 coins) to the general store (2 coins if 2 landmarks) Adds the member's only club (-All coins if >3 landmarks) I own all versions and expansions of this game and will not play another version due to the game imbalance the previous versions had. Some issues I do have with the new version: The 'night' cards are kind of ugly The box insert is cardboard, rather than plastic which is flimsy and doesn't hold the components well. They got rid of the loan company (millionaires row), which had a nice combo with the moving company

I just picked this up from Target on the weekend when I was in the U.S. (I'm Canadian and our Targets went belly up before most of them were even built). I haven't opened it yet, but glad I bought it after your review. :)

Just bought it at Target, it was on clearance, just $14 dlls, great deal.

the only thing that seems different is the card backs for separating. the rest of those rules were added with the expansions... really not a fan of the purple night background on the cards. the original bg made everything pop and look bright. it all looks muddy now.

Does this version have all of the cards from the Harbor Expansion and Millionaires Row expansion?

Wow this looks great! I’m happy they’ve made the 2 piles of cards an official rule, In the original + expansion not having any 1-6 cards coming out made the game quite painful. The only negative I see to this edition over the original is the artwork, I think I preferred the day time looking cards.

That version force you to use the 5-5-2 variant which seems like a good idea at first but once you realize that it makes the one die strategies way overpowered, you wont use the 7 to 14 row anymore and that just break the game.

So, this version makes the 5/5/2 variant the official way of playing? It's supposed to make the game run smoother, but when I tried it, the game just kept on going on forever, with no end in sight!

Mind sharing your opinion on component quality? I heard a lot of comments that the cards and insert are of bad quality.

Is there any point in getting this game if you already have the original? Sounds like you can just play it in a similar way. Also Target Exclusives is BS.

This looks like the version i play anywaies. Harbor expansion, millionares row, and the dice tower promo. I hated the completely random change the harbor brought and looked online to someones suggestion to separate the high/low cards into 2 rows. It looks like they listened to their player base and really figured out how they should do it... that being said... im dissapointed that its not anything new for me.

I'm not a fan of the night time background at all, it makes the cards look grungy and uninteresting. I've never actually heard of the 5/5/2 variant, but I'm interested to try it.

I wonder if owners of the original game could just separate the cards in to those deck and play it that way.

Yep the old 5-5-2 variant. I have the original and both expansions and I play this way anyway. It's the only way to play it.

This is great for new players, but sucks for me I have the original and the expansions, ill just use the variant play and deal with it

I think this is the version of Machi Koro that we played this weekend... and a 5-player game (all newbies) took over 3 hours to play! I think the main thing that made the game drag on so much was that we had a lot of money flowing, but none stayed in your hands long enough to be useful before being stolen by someone else (i.e., red and purple cards). We had one player who was stuck rolling only one die for the first 2 hours, because his money kept getting taken because of sushi restaurants, french restaurants, and cafes taking his money before he could stockpile anything. The box says "30 minutes", but it should really say "30 minutes per player"!

It's just machi koro + expansions with slightly different art. I saw nothing in this version that can't be done with the Original game (+ expansions), you know, the ones that ARE available outside the US!

Does the way he says "Koro" bother anyone else?

That´s just like the originial game + the expansions. Why should someone who already got the original game buy this ?

I really despise Machi Koro. I don't understand how some people seem to ignore that the game is practically random. It can be fun to play with kids I guess, but I think there are many more interesting choices.
