Very helpful review, I gave up on the base game after just a few plays because I saw it as too shallow and repetitive. I love that they've randomized the card setup to alleviate that, but I think the potential of such long games may be a deal breaker for me. In my eyes, a game this light really needs to be done in a half hour or 45 minutes at the most. Maybe a house rule to limit the number of cards in the initial batch that take more than a 6 to pay off would help.
What if you expanded on the random draw variant by separating out the buildings that cost say..3 or lower into their own stack. When filling up the tableu during setup, 3 of the 10 spots get filled from the "cheap deck" and the rest are from the "expensive deck." Then when one of the cheap spots is emptied, you replenish it from the cheap deck. That way you always have lower end cards to pick from. Of course those numbers could use adjusting with testing. Maybe 5 cheap and 5 expensive or whatever. Since attack cards slow the game they could be omitted from the cheap deck regardless of cost. Also figure in ones that activate on 6 or lower.
I am dying to get it but it was supposed to be out before Christmas. Still not here. I heard the L.A. dock fire and strike held it up. How did you get yours?
Thank you for the review.... I don't own the game yet and I was a bit worried because of some of the criticism, but I think I'll take the plunge now. Something tells me my wife will like this.
