It is a song that comes from a German musical, "Three Penny Opera," words and music by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill. Bobby Darin made the song famous as "Mack the Knife" in 1959. Louis Armstrong first performed his version in 1955.
It's like she fell through a time portal! It's too bad they was too young to play with Louie, Bing, Teagarten etc. However they capture their spirit and brings it home today, so it's like your listening to Ella and Louie simultaneously! It truly is amazing!
where the hell is the Grim reaper. ??.. Gunhild is going to live to be 100. Hush this noise about reapers.. you be nothing but an ignorant Russkie... if UKR , my apologies :-)) Tim FIdler NzL
Gunhild, you have actually inspired me to pick up my trombone again after all these years. You are are stunning, fascinating, extremely talented, and just a down right beautiful person full of so much life.
I didn't think Mack the Knife could sound better in German, but it does!!! Gunhild, your vocal and the rest of the band really make for a swinging number!!!
Gunhild, here Ohio USA tonight listening with my 89 year young Mother. We're tapping our feet & smiling, from ear to ear. We love You💃 & Your Family👪 , so much talent. 🎷🎺🎻🎶🎤🎹🎶🎸🎶 Bless You and Your Family, for the hours of 🕗 - 🕛entertainment and memories. 👨💭 👵💭 🌆 💕 🌷
This is a very beautiful rendition of this song! Though I also like the version by Bobby Darin, I am amazed at how faithful the English lyrics are at certain points and then different at other points to the German ones. I really like the way you sing in German. Thank you!
The original version was from a German musical called The Three Penny Opera. Music by Kurt Weill. Realized by his wife Lotte Lenya. Lyrics Bertold Brecht. Two generations ago everyone knew that…maybe three generations.
Recently discovered you from PMJ, thank goodness I did. Your music has brought tears to my eyes time and time again, words cannot express how grateful I am for what you do. You've gained a lifelong fan. Keep being you
Greetings from the US and a fellow trumpeter. I don't understand German, but your entire group's joy in playing and singing this transcends the language barrier.
It's a song about corruption in the Weimar republic... mackie Messer (knife in Ger) has knife and he goes around knifing people like poor old Schmuel Meyer for his Gelt. THere's a mention of a dead body (....Blauen Sontag Lieght ein Todes mann am Strand) on the Strand - the plot is specifically set in England to try to escape the censor in Germany of about 1935. If you type Lyrics , Mack the Knife into Mr Google you will no doubt find a translation
I had forgotten that when I was 14, I sat in a bombed-out church in East Germany and saw The Three-Penny Opera. At intermission, a guy sang this in full zoot-suit glory. Thanks so much for returning that memory!
The original was from a German musical by the composer she announced at the end. Kurt Weill. In the 1930s to 1950s it was considered to be one of the greatest and most influential musicals. Now it is almost forgotten.😢
Dayum! I clicked on cause it was Mack the Knife, and I discover a gorgeous lady playing trumpet and singing it in the original German! Wow! I sing and play cornet, now I just gotta learn the German lyrics, lol! Thank you! Subscribed!
@@lisaconnearney5707 a whole boat load of people... Bobby Darin (highest charting,) Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Louie Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Brian Setzer, Dr. John, and even Michael Bublé. Bobby Darin didn't write the song though. It was written in the 20's in Germany.
Gunchild jak zawsze w znakomitej formie,i cudowna interpretacja.Ogromnie utalentowana piosenkarka,muzyk,performer.Bravo.Bravo,Bravo,Dziekujemy,Przyjaciele z Indiany,USA.
She is so into this song, I thought she was going to explode. I’ve been watching for only a couple of days now, actually evening just before bedtime, and I think it will be a bedtime ritual if I’m not careful; of course I wouldn’t mind that. Blessings ma’am, you are amazing!
Outstanding version. Very talented line up. All breaks killed, and the lead singer is crazy talented. Really surprised she didn’t mention Bobby Darin along with Louis Armstrong and Frank Sinatra at the end. I’ve always thought BD’s version was the most popular and considered the standard.
Well, as this is a cover of the German original by Lotte Lenya, the translations aren't the focus. Also the original Lenya version is very dark and the English translations and versions are really peppy, which doesn't suit the source. Especially Darin's version.
@@VCT3333 I didn’t know about Bobby Darin’s version until reading the comments of this video. I went and had a look at Darins right after listening to Lenyas. I didn’t make it halfway through his version, I felt his cheerfulness completely missed the theme of the song. Lenyas version is outright scary, and that is meant as a compliment.
(As is characteristic...) *Inarguably MAGNIFICENT* rendition, Mz. Gunhild! I also was impressed by the way to gave "props" (in the parlance of our times) to Msrrs. Armstrong & Sinatra. 🙂 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 🥂
Yes Gunhild, Franck Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, as you said (and Ella Fitzgerald), are (were) marvellous interpreters of "Mac The Knife". But your huge talent is reaching their talents and German language isn't a barrier! CONGRATULATION!
Bravissimi una band che non conoscevo, degna delle più titolate, splendida la tromba della cantante, il clarinettista al livello dei grandi dello swing di nuovo bravi
As a classical music and jazz lover - originally from the Netherlands , after which South Africa and since 1985 in Australia - I am overjoyed having stumbled on this beauty. Never heard of Gunhild Carling before but now I have heard her brilliant trumpet number and great jazz voice I am an instant fan ! Also the other musicians deserve praise for their great performance ,
Tem gente que nasce com o dom da musica. Esse é o caso da Gunhild. Parabéns pelo ótimo desempenho. Es uma artista completa. E sua banda é Fenomenal. Excelente conjunto.
