Once listed as the largest Mall in Georgia, now sits the nearly abandoned shopping mall in Macon, Georgia. This Mall once housed 6 anchors in its prime and is currently down 1. Macon Mall is a victim of being a Dead Mall.

I was here at Macon Mall two weeks ago. There have been some big changes. Part of the mall is now an Annex for the Macon - Bibb County Government. Also a large pickleball complex, supposedly the largest in the world was also added. Outside on the site of the old addition is the Atrium Health Amphitheater which sits around 10k. I'll give Macon some credit for trying to do something with the place.

I've spent my teenage years in the Macon Mall. I remember the glass elevator that was in the middle of the escalators. When Pizza Hut was there back in 1988. Everytime I went I was either in Mayces or Dillard's. I cried when I saw the video where Dillard's was torn down. I spent a lot of time in Dillard's everytime I went. I would go with a group of friends. I lost track of time Everytime I was in Dillard's. I would be late meeting back with my group that they would have to look for me. It got so bad that one of the guys in my group joked and said If we all meet back up, and Pam ain't here chances are you can find her in Mayces or Dillard's. They always found me in Dillard's. It was my favorite place. I'm seeing your video for the first time. It doesn't look the same. As far as I can remember there wasn't any security guards at the Macon Mall. I never saw any. I believe if there were the food court fights and all the other violent events would have never of happened, and it wouldn't be run down like it is today. I live in Georgia. Been here all my life. Born bred and raised. I'm in South Georgia. That's how I was able to speed my teenage years in the Macon Mall. The first time of me going to Macon Mall, I was overwhelmed as to how huge it was. RIP Macon Mall. Thanks for the memories. 😥

I spent my Childhood at the Macon Mall in the 90s. I never knew Pizza Hut was in the Mall, but I remember Taco Bell being in there. I used to get lost due to most of my favorite stores being located on the other side of JCPenney. It's sad to see that it declined. I miss the "Incredible Chocolate Chip Co." on the second floor by where Belk used to be. Remember when Dollar Tree was in the mall?

I live in Pennsylvania and up here malls that are dying are leasing spaces to hospitals creating doctors offices and radiology centers. This is great since public transportation still goes to these buildings so people who can’t drive can more easily get to their doctors offices.

Lmmaaaaao And you think this is a good thing? Shuttin the Malls down that people go to get out of the house explore, shop, have fun? Let me tell you sheep people a thing or two. Shutting the Malls down is a carefully contructed plan of the NWO ELiTE Demons. And turning them into Hospitals, That’s should tell your pea brain what’s going to be happening in the years to come (after see the Plandemic) What you need to do is resist and try to keep these Mals open. The narrator of this post is probably a lion working for them. Trying to push the idea of “Dying Malls” so that you can feel the same and not support the Malls. Wake your dead brains.

It should be noted that starting in the early 2000's that the "food court fights" were actually gang fights - often complete with gangs actually shooting at each other there while people were eating. THAT was the nail in the coffin. Oddly, Macon is building a music amphitheater there now in one of the massive parking lots. That will fail as well, as absolutely nobody wants to go around the area at all now. Unfortunately, Macon has many areas like this.

@@puffm696 Oh yeah - they're going by the book as well as they can for now. I made the comment to a friend "Watch - the first band they'll get in there will be Skynyrd." It was. Next - there will be "B" country acts, and rap acts. After probably 3-4 rap concerts there - it'll happen. A gang fight will break out, and several people will be shot. When that happens, most people will just simply not go there anymore. We've seen this record played too many times.

A new addition to the property is an amphitheater. But like you said in the video, a major reason for the deterioration of the mall was the significant rise of crime in the area. I was too young to remember the newly built additions, but I vividly remember the decline and deconstruction of the property. When I first moved here to Cobb Co., Mervyn's was at Town Centre Mall, but I was more familiar with Penny's when they moved there. It's a shame the malls are going downhill, but it's not all the internet fault. The stores like Penny's and Sears used to have catalogs and my mother used to order from them. Did anyone blame the catalogs? People I talked to at the malls when I work at B. Dalton Bookseller's Saud the crime usually kept them away and Buckhead wants its own City now. Because of the robberies, carjackings, etc.

@@virginiaconnor8350 Shannon Mall I barely remember that place, I barely remember the original Macys at that mall as well, okay Panama City Mall is a former mall one story small town mall in Panama City Florida where I currently live destroyed by Hurricane Michael, it was loosing money to Pier Park in Panama City Beach Florida even though Destin Commons and the Shops at Wiregrass Commons in Dothan, Alabama and Destin, Florida respectively had role in the demise as well, so therefore it had Dillard’s, JCPenney’s, and Sears, now it’s just two department stores left, Sears was going to close down before Hurricane Michael destroyed the mall, but they filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy during that time and the building never had the liquidation because of the storm, so they closed it along with the mall, okay Dillard’s is not anymore expensive than Macys or Belks if you really want to know, Nordstrom’s yes, and Parisians is same price range as Dillard’s no difference really, okay Phipps Plaza would have done great with Dillard’s and those stores I agree, but they were more focused on a unique luxury mall in general unfortunately, Sears and JCPenney’s would have failed at Lenox Square by now, that would have been a mistake opening those two there, Sears would have closed in the early 2000’s, and JCPenney’s would have closed probably last year or this year if that was the case, okay Mervyn’s was extremely short lived, I remember JCPenney’s at Town Center at Cobb, so hmm, yeah crime and internet are the main blame for the decline in malls, wow how old are you? 🤣 I never seen a Sears or JCPenney’s catalog my parents remember those, I don’t. 😂 Buckhead is nothing but a cesspool city it’s awful by the way. 🤔

The Macon Mall is doomed. What were once middle-class and working-class neighborhoods surrounding it have become hoods over the last several decades. So putting anything open to the public will just draw in people that will cause problems with little money to spend which drives away people who have money to spend. Even if that problem were solved households with disposable incomes sufficient enough to support a mall aren't going to drive to that part of the city, not when they have other options. The best strategic option would be to try to develop a call center, government services, warehouses, logistics centers, or perhaps educational facilities. Maybe a new regional jail? But honestly, you're very limited by the demographic surrounding the Macon Mall. Amazon has already built a center south of Macon, so I don't know who else would touch it. I expect urban blight to continue to increase in the area. There's always the option to tear down the structure along with the abandoned retail space surrounding it and let it go back to nature. Macon should develop a plan to do that as these areas of the city die. Return them to nature to make up for the urban sprawl stretching out of the city trying to escape it. You'll end up with a donut with a green hole, maybe one day someone will be attracted to it again. This is a problem with several southern cities now. They're like mini Detroits.

@@undergroundretail I think the amphitheater is a bad idea. Frankly, I think they should partner with the tech college and perhaps turn the facility into a high-school vocational school. The people in the area need an education that can help them crawl out of their poverty. The trades offer a way out. We need to stop trying to make everyone a college student. Instead, give them an education that they can use to make a good life for themselves and raise a family.

Thanks for Commenting! You are correct. They tore it down around the time the video was originally uploaded. This video was re-uploaded after RU-vid removed it, due to a copyright video footage.

I just don't know why department stores exists? Walmart got them all beat, no one can compete against Walmart. Malls needs to be torn down and made into out door shopping centers, but again Walmart will be any retail compeditor.
