I made the same decision a few months ago and it was actually worth it. It was actually the first time I had ever owned a Mac and I love it! Especially with my iPhone and iPad. :) Would recommend.
@@nathanstevenson100 Great Thank you. I'm a heavy Adobe user so that's a big one for me. I almost purchased the new 2020 iMac and then stopped because of the impending, now here, silicon. Then I thought, maybe a laptop with a monitor for when I'm home. Appreciate the input.
@@mallorydurrick I would say it’s likely coming sometime next year with the 24in iMac but who knows when that will be. So if you could wait for up to a year I’d say wait. If not, I doubt the 13in will let you down
You guys always forget that an iPad can act as a second screen for the Mac, and this already IS a touch-screen. So may be this is what the controls are somewhat bigger than before. Not for the Mac itself, but for the side-screen.
For those holding off on Big Sur, I am currently on the latest Catalina. I notice it has a couple of the Safari features outlined: tab preview and trackers with the privacy report under the security icon.
at 5:39 Luke pointed out you when to point out the arrow to get them all appear, i have found a way to get them to appear all the time, you must go to settings - keyboard -i’m the keyboard section it will display ‘Touch bar shows’ Quick actions, you will need to change this to ‘Expanded Control Strip’ and then you have all your function keys 😁👍🏻
@@depression_isnt_real Lol....he is the guy from the Apple Keynotes introducing MacOS stuff and recently in the latest keynote he was the guy opening the MacBook in the lab.
@@depression_isnt_real He's the senior vice president of Software or something at apple. Thats why he usually talks about software related stuffs (ie new ios or macos versions) during apple keynotes. Like he talked about big sur on last event. And he is among the more 'famous' persons who appear on keynotes because he is typically the funny guy. You see craig federichgi funny clips comilation videos on youtube.

I was a PC user since the 1980s. I bought an iMac in 2019, then a MacBook Pro, iPhone, and an Apple watch. I now have the iPhone 12 Pro Max. I will never go back to a PC or Microsoft. I am a committed Apple user. I will never go back to an Android phone, either. Thank you for this video. I appreciate all you tech experts who take the time to explain the details of Apple software.
They were added to safari in Catalina after being introduced biting WWDC during the BigSur announcement. It was flagged as a Big Sur feature but released early because privacy is apple’s main concern.
@@Mon-gx9xe they say that since the m1 is so efficient and the ram is unified(in the chip itself), 8gb is more than enough for casual users. But then again they say that if you upgrade the ram, the gpu will also “get better” so if you want better graphics performance go for the upgrade
@@Mon-gx9xe yup exactly, I mean look at the iPad Air 4, only 4 gb of ram but handles video editing way better than many other laptops with 8 gb. So just imagine the MacBook Air as a more powerful iPad Pro with even more ram (I think that’s appropriate 😅) and you can have infinite tabs open haha
I've just upgraded to Big Sur through last night, and it was a bit of a shock when I opened the laptop today. So far so good, I like the new-ish look, I like the new notification thingy. The only thing I have not got used to yet, is the space between rounded corner of maximised window and the top bar. It pokes my eyes!
I was looking at this to learn more about how to use my MacBook because it’s my first one. Got the m1 MacBook Air so all of this isn’t new for me, Big Sur is all I’ve used and coming from my iPhone and iPad it made the transition so much smoother. I absolutely love it
I have been a windows and linux user for my whole life. The only experience with a Mac is watching those videos. Last week I made a decision: I am selling all my windows machines, two of three are sold and I had to sell a lot of my stuff, but I am sure I won't regret it: I ordered my first ever Mac, the Macbook Air M1 with 512GB and it is definitely the most I ever spent for a computer. But I am sure I will love it, windows gets on my nerves more and more and especially as a free time photographer and semi professional with audio productions like podcasts, windows and the complete mess they make with their drivers for audio devices I am so glad that I will leave windows behind me...
@@bespiller8221 they do that purposely so that it can be noticeable if music is going on. It ms not only not in key, but a few cents flat, basically tuned microtonally
FYI the new startup chime is now in standard A440 hz tuning - and is a "F" chord. The old startup chime was also a F chord but was slightly sharp of an A440 tuned F, it sounded about 2 or 3 cents sharp of an A440 "F".
I like the new sounds, and new look the most, and it feels smoother than older versions of the Mac OS. Even though others were quiet snappy, this just feels overall more polished, especially when comparing on an initial release day upgrade. Sure I have a few little bugs, but they aren't show stoppers, and more of an annoyance, but they aren't anything I can't work around until Apple fixes them. I also noticed, that while my late 2015 27 inch iMac already had the start chime enabled, it got changed to the new one after upgrading to Big Sur. As always, I have a Time Machine backup in case anything goes wrong, and a copy of Mojave on a portable external hard drive, if I need 32-bit support. Overall, I've adjusted to Apple's new direction for the OS quite well.
@@SuitedMoose but some of the features he mentioned came with the last version of Catalina. I think that's what they meant. Because the background on safari, the tab previews and the thing about website trackers and the "sheild" icon in safari here all there since the last version of macOS Carolina.
Well, there's big issues on Apple's side and users around the world aren't able to download macOS Big Sur. I really hope they resolve the issue because I'm so eager to get my hands on it!
When I saw the horrible gap between lower display bezel and dock, weirdly not-centered icons near date in top right corner and GIANT Safari top bar I’ve reverted to Catalina instantly... I like idea of making UI a bit more modern but I hate how they did it
I have a late 2013 MacBook Pro and it says “an error occurred during the installation”literally like 2 seconds after I click update, guess it’s not going to let me do it.
I got to use macOS Big Sur on my Lenovo Hackintosh and it felt like an OS front the future. macOS Big Sur is a whole new OS, but it’s still is macOS that we loved and will love. I so happy that the Boot Chime is back. Can’t wait to get my first Mac. ☺️
wait if i install an iOS app on Big Sur do I get access to the iOS 14 widget on here? That would be insanely amazing and make it such a smooth transition.
Bought my first Mac in the 80's -( an LC3, I believe) and have a 27" iMac on order, with my 2011 iMac still chugging along. Im really looking forward to Big Sur... Fingers crossed!
Mine was doing this too, I restarted my computer and went to the apple website, under Mac->Big Sur->Upgrade Now, I did that and then it started downloading
I, too, prefer safari. In fact, as a developer I use Safari for all personal things and the Brave browser and Firefox for web development. Safari has always had a difficult time rendering animations and parallax effects on web pages. I hope that’s fixed this time around.
The Unified sidebar is awesome. The removal of the top grey bar on Finder is awesome. Control Center is awesome (but agreed, it does look like it was meant for a Touchscreen interface). The whole UI is snappy as hell, on my MacBook Pro 2015. I have been using Mac OS for the best part of 15 years, and I am confident in saying this is best yet. Smooth as butter.
@@Prem-j9l3s not the biggest threat lmao, but i just thought it was funny how apple brags about security and privacy when they really just want your money and data Edit: The point I was trying to make is apple will spy on you but they won't admit it. At least with Android, Linux and Microsoft you have ways to control your OS and actually own the product.
I like the return of a startup chime and the new one does sound like a higher definition version of the previous one. As for the rest, I'm, waiting for useful changes to the operating system.
Luke. Changing the keyboard brightness from the Touch Bar is not as difficult as you think. Touch the button and hold for a second. It will open with a slider bar automatically. You don't have to click and then click. The same applies to volume.
I was debating which one to get first. Either the MacBook Air or the iPad Air. I’m getting the MacBook Air first cause I really want the macOS. Never had the MacBook so I’m excited
Nice video, but I don’t understand why everyone hates the touch bar, I wouldn’t say it is is the best thing ever, but it is pretty good. And for exemple in this video you were like “It is much easier to raise or lower the brightness of your keyboard from this menu than from the touch bar” 5:26 it is the same thing and maybe it is even better and easier with the touch bar
I've been using big sur with barrykn's patcher on my mid 2012 mbp 13" for a couple months now and honestly, as long as you have an ssd and 8 or 16gb of ram. I'd say the 2012 gets another year of support. It runs absolutely fine and is as snappy as mojave or catalina.
I heard you mention that in the MacBook Pro touchbar, you have to touch the brightness icon and then expand to adjust brightness, but you can actually hold down the brightness icon and slide left or right to adjust the brightness, same for the volume. Just letting you know! Great video by the way, will be updating to Big Sur tonight!
Started out with an IPad Air 3 to monitor the IPads I bought for my kids. Now I have the Air3, an IPhone 12 Pro, and just recently, a 15 in 2015 Macbook Pro Dual Graphics. Upgraded to BIG SUR. My windows laptop became my kids windows laptop. I much prefer the Macbook.
Great video. Have been enjoying Big Sur on my Late 2013 MBP since the Public Beta release started. This OS makes my MBP run like it was new out of the box. :)
My 2017 Mac book air was compatible with it but wouldn’t update Bc I had no storage left. So I decided to upgrade to the m1 air and I love it. It is so much better and faster.
