Is the M1 MacBook Air 'Pro' now? It's not as crazy as it sounds... 

Even if you don't like Apple, I don't see how this doesn't bring about a revolution. I expect to see a lot more ARM-based laptops coming outside of the Apple ecosystem over the next 5 - 10 years.

@@dacypher22 You know, they've tried (surface pro x) and it's failed, partially because they didn't have a proper translation layer and it didn't have much software support, but I absolutely agree that ARM chips are the future

@Unreliable Bacon I wouldn't do that, ARM doesn't offer backward comparability, its why they went x86 and not ARM in the 1980's.

@@realandychen I actually wasn't aware of that one. I knew Microsoft had been pursuing a full ARM version of Windows for some time now, but Windows RT and its failure dampened its prospects at MS for some time. I don't know if I would consider the failure of any single piece of hardware to signal a failure for ARM Windows, though. If MS is even in a position to be able to tweak it some (a lot, probably) to make it natively compatible with the M1 Macs, that would be a huge win to keep Mac users as a userbase for Windows. I think the important thing to MS is to try to look ahead and see the change to ARM as inevitable and to keep Windows a big part of that future. Losing their foothold in mobile has been seen as possibly Microsoft's biggest failure to date and I think letting dedicated computers slip away would be something they could never stomach.

It depends I think. GPU is their weak point as far as I can tell, but processor seems good overall. I am wondering though about the storage situation. SSDs slow as you use more of their capacity, so I am curious if that impacts the comparison. Also age of drive can impact that. (Speaking of which, drive failure when it runs out of writes would suck on those. Hadn't thought of that. Not a fan of having everything integrated. Wish they would have SSD/RAM upgradeable.)

I’ll wait for the M1 iPad Pro that docks to an iMac stand/dock and runs Mac apps and Apple Glass VR. Until then I’ll have to make due with one of these 1st gen macs.

@@carlosr1176 The change to them running basically variations of the same hardware on everything does open up some interesting possibilities. That statement may not be too far off from reality. I am afraid however this is Apple basically giving up on "desktop" gaming. Not that they were ever really a major player on that front, but the fact that system and graphics memory is shared may cause some issues down the road. Textures can only compress so much. Will be interesting to see what happens as these platforms evolve.

@@ps5hasnogames55 This is true, but they somewhat amusingly switched right before Radeon finally seems to be competitive again and Intel made graphics more of a priority with their XE integrated solutions. For the record, not saying the M1 is bad, just that the demands for desktop and mobile graphics are different. I think that is just a trade-off they decided to make around what most Mac Users use their systems for. They can overcome some of it with optimization because they control both hardware and software, but it will probably be a limitation of the platform.

The craziest part is how badly Intel screwed up. They are still at 14nm while AMD is killing them at 7nm, and Apple is at 5nm with the M1 plus the custom memory on chip which wouldn’t fly in the PC world but works for Apple with their closed non-DIY designs. I’m hoping Apple will sell us boards to upgrade DIY style, but that probably won’t happen. Will be interesting to see how this influences the PC industry as a whole, I suspect the latency will be crazy low with their design.

The M1 is impressive, but let's be honest, I watched this on a Lenovo X1 Carbon, and at the end of the video it was at room temperature (both top and bottom). Also it has the same instant wake up, as you lid it up, the desktop is available right away. But the M1 CPU performance is INSANE!!! There there is just not competition. And the battery life is also INSANE.

​@@KhurramJhumra nope, but at least is a very silent fan. Perfs aside (it cannot compete with the M1) for other things is a very decent laptop. I also have a Lenovo T14 with an AMD CPU, and it's better in performance compared to the X1, but it also cannot compete with e M1 when it comes to performance per watt. I'm really fighting to not buy the Air or the Mac Mini... I don't need them but I'm a tech enthusiast and that SOC is very attractive 😅

It actually crossed my mind to switch to windows, just because the intel chips always sucked on the base models and I couldn’t afford anything better. The only problem was that also for windows most options in my budget were still shit. Now we got a Macbook air at $999 with this kind of performance? The biggest no-brainer out there.

It crossed my mind too. I have multiple macs, including a 5k, and just a couple of months ago started thinking on switching since I felt there wasn’t enough updates anymore and the prices were getting ridiculous expensive for the pro models. I decided to wait and oh man what a fantastic surprise. I still have to wait because of my development requirements, but I’ll have enough time to save for a pro 16-inch at max. I’m expecting big things for it now.

@@davidc756 I bought a late 2019 16” MBP with 2.3 Ghz i9 (too much higher cost to max out) with maxed out GPU and 64 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD (don’t need more). Traded in my 2016 15” to do it. I was off a year (plus whatever wait for 16” Apple Silicon) and now the MacBook Air is about same total multicore speed, faster single core speed, for a fraction of the price, and oh, runs all the other Apple software besides. I also have a 2014 retina 5k iMac. So of course, last night I bought a 16 GB M1 Mac Mini with 512 GB SSD, probably get it around Christmas. More RAM, GPU and other ports are what my other machines have: I couldn’t justify a tiny laptop screen to run Xcode on. I expect to do some ray tracing via POVRay with this even in hot months (no AC in Redmond, WA area) and perhaps run it slower on previous machines in cold months to heat my apartment. My 16” MBP if used enough can certainly keep me from worrying about having kids, even if I tried 🤣🤣🤣

Get the educational model if you’re a student

There’s a bit of a learning curve from Windows...I was a little annoyed for about a week or two when I switched about 5 years ago but fucking loved it after that. A couple of interesting notes I thought about the switch: MacOS programs aren’t “installed” and “uninstalled”, they are just downloaded and opened or deleted. And you can run multiple instances of the same program, an example would be having 5+ QuickTime players running at the same time with 5 different videos...never seen a video player do that on Windows. Also you’re gonna want a secondary app to handle window management like Magnet on MacOS because there’s not really a good snap feature built in.

@VideoCommenter How is it chicken vs egg? The hardware is already made, and is already compatible with unoptimisable games. Most major engines have native support for arm so optimisation shouldn’t be hard.

Yeah, you can also just run Shadow PC. Runs all super graphics desktop games on Mac, it’s nuts. Shadow PC + MacBook Air or Pro is just a freakin dream come true.

That's exactly the same question I have. I don't care so much about how much RAM it has or if it's upgradable because of its stellar performance, but a battery swap is a very real consideration in the future. I just don't want to buy a throwaway machine. I already have a 2009 and a 2012 MacBook, which are durable and upgradable but this one definitely is very interesting to me.

As an owner of one of these devices, I very much agree with this comment.

@@MrDC80 They have not had a good track record having their laptops run cool (or quiet). To me, this indicates that the laptops are basically running way too hot which can obviously shorten their potential life span. Of course there will be outliers, some that seemingly last for ever or some that last a matter of weeks but my main point remains, the cooler they run the better. Never mind things like the butterfly keyboard which just seemingly failed on it's own. I have hope that this time around, The new line of Macbooks will actually be good. I bought one to try for myself and am certainly hoping for the best once it arrives.

Well... Don't be too sad! You've still got a pretty good machine! With a great pair of speakers, and a (more than likely) better GPU. Also 4 USB-C ports. That's something you can't get on these M1 Macs.

They should do that! My jaw dropped way back in those days when the announced they would use intel, i hated it so much, but we had to move forward, but now, the ppc days are back with apple being unique again!

most Autocad users are on windows, also the industrial software: catia,solidworks. I Don think they gonna port to arm, well solidworks never was available on mac. ferrari and lambos are designed with catia software

There is cost for transfer from DDR4, there is no virtualization i think. And Apple won't sell own M1 next gen to HP, Lenovo etc for obvious reasons.
