"He lives now only in my memories." Define epic in just three words: Mad Max 2.

Couldn't agree more. With "It was here, in this plighted place, that he learned to live again." I'd say. Actually both the introduction and ending sequences (text + visuals) are just breathtaking, and still haunting 28 years after. Any language (I'm French, and more used to the equally brilliant french dubbed version).

I do admit Mad max always gave me the idea to do a real Old man logan film than the one we got as i would always have Titus Welliver for a much older Wolverine and Vernon wells for Sabertooth and Billy zane for Xavier when his mind would be store inside a iron man sized Sentinel that would be sided with Wolverine

"My life fades. The vision dims. All that remains are memories. I remember a time of chaos, ruined dreams, this wasted land. But most of all, I remember the road warrior, the man we called Max. To understand who he was we have to go back to the other time, when the world was powered by the black fuel and the desert sprouted great cities of pipe and steel - gone now, swept away. For reasons long forgotten two mighty warrior tribes went to war and touched off a blaze which engulfed them all. Without fuel they were nothing. They'd built a house of straw. The thundering machines sputtered and stopped. Their leaders talked and talked and talked, but nothing could stem the avalanche. Their world crumbled. Cities exploded - a whirlwind of looting, a firestorm of fear. Men began to feed on men. On the roads it was a white-line nightmare. Only those mobile enough to scavenge, brutal enough to pillage would survive. The gangs took over the highways, ready to wage war for a tank of juice, and in this maelstrom of decay ordinary men were battered and smashed - men like Max, the warrior Max. In the roar of an engine, he lost everything and became a shell of a man, a burnt-out desolate man, a man haunted by the demons of his past, a man who wandered out into the wasteland. And it was here, in this blighted place, that he learned to live again." --Opening Monologue, Mad Max 2 The Road Warrior

In my childhood(90s) i watched this movie on TV at least 5 times. I was really worried about the future. I chose to study science and technology because one of the motivating factors was this movie. Are we destined to perish in resource wars and poverty? Well, it shouldn't have to be this way. We have so many remedies now. More than we imagine, such that our reach exceeds our imagination...

Kind of interesting to think of this…the second and third movies are told years later from the perspective of a narrator who survived the events. And people telling stories tend to embellish a little, add drama, forget details, misremember others. But clearly Max made a huge impact. He’d become a sort of folk hero, a larger than life figure.

Ya know next to the Terminator franchise, I feel like this series also coincidentally predicted the future quite flawlessly. The way this intro was executed with the Narrator’s deep and old-ish voice coupled with disturbing war-like stock footage all drenched in black & white made this feel all the more… REAL.

I love how the logo at 0:09 comes in with a sound effect that gradually dies down. Kinda like tires screeching to a halt. Compared to the flashier logo from the first movie, this intro keeps me holding onto my seat out of tension, given how well that carries out with the soundtrack. I also find the sound at 0:50 so ominous about the narration to come. Amazing film.

In Beyond Thunderdome, they hint it was a nuclear war that destroyed civilization. But here it seems like civilization ran out of fuel. And with no fuel, everything fell apart. That's why there is precious little bits of left: Though still it's odd they use it driving around. The system tends to become increasingly repressive as tensions soar. Not just with crimes tied specifically to nat sec but all crimes. If you wanna be ready you better make sure you don't get picked up for something that was at most a fine last week but now its upgraded to something serious. The system also takes a dim view of survivalism. Not because it has an issue with it but because it can potentially threaten unity.

@branchmedo
@branchmedo 7 месяцев назад
Not really - the fires destroyed maybe 2% of Kuwait's total reserves, or a fraction of a percent of the world's total. The aftermath of the 1973 Oil Crisis which inspired the Max Max series meant that energy sources (oil and otherwise) were greatly diversified, and so no longer as dependent on the Middle East for oil; efficiency (especially for motor vehicles) became a priority. The movies show a reaction to a similar crisis taken to an extreme, and ignoring the amount of oil fields in the US, Russia, South America and Africa - because otherwise there wouldn't be a movie.

Australia, as with other non-major or non-aligned nations, had not been affected by the nuclear world war, fought mostly in the Northern hemisphere. Australian society crumbled after the civilised world was obliterated. Law and order ceased to operate, industry and agriculture dwindled, fuel supplies dried up, and the climate was temporarily ruined by the effects of the war that otherwise did not touch Australia.

Question -- Maybe someone can dig this up in an old interview, but why did George Miller decide to make The Road Warrior / Mad Max 2 a post-apocalypse film? And, did he already have this revolutionary idea in mind when making Part 1?
@DarthRushy
@DarthRushy Год назад
Making Mad Max a dystopian film happened by accident during the production of part 1, when Miller realised he didn't have the budget to properly do the script. By making everything rundown and crappy, he saved money on sets and costumes. The world being dystopian was an excuse. Miller must have liked the idea because he pushed it to the extremes in the sequels.

Not a chance in a million years. Viable options are already taking over. Well, at least in those countries where people understand that it's adapting or dying. For those countries who refuse to adapt... it might go the way of Mad Max. But those countries deserve no better. Study history and discover this common pattern: Those who kept believing it would always stay the same went under and died. Oh, and old people who keep believing it's still the 1960's are rapidly going extinct. Good riddance.
