2015's MAD MAX (PC, PS4, Xbox One) is an underrated game that is worth revisiting, especially on a newer PC, Xbox Series X, or PS5. Let's talk about this great licensed game that time is quickly forgetting.

Game description (via Wikipedia)
Mad Max is an action-adventure video game based on the Mad Max franchise. Developed by Avalanche Studios and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, it was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in 2015. Feral Interactive published the game's macOS and Linux versions. In the game, players control Max Rockatansky as he progresses through the wasteland building a vehicle, the "Magnum Opus", to do battle with a gang of raiders, led by Scabrous Scrotus, and to reach the storied "Plains of Silence", where he hopes to find peace. Mad Max emphasizes vehicular combat, in which players can use weapon and armor upgrades on their car to fight enemies. It is set in an open post-apocalyptic wasteland consisting of deserts, canyons, and caves.

Driving around in Mad Max was such a cool experience. I treated it like some sort of flow-state game, just soaking in the atmosphere, the sounds, the music, everything...it was such a decadent experience driving around in that game, punctuated by visceral violence. Mad Max needs a sequel. In my opinion this is what needs improvement: - story - different bosses (all the bosses in game were the same with different paint colour - better character development - fuel needs to be more rare or hard to find - more variable missions Combat, car combat, world doesn't need to be touched.
@WhiteWalter6211

I agree. Another thing I would say isn't needed but Definitely appreciated is a better soundtrack. it did the job but the soundtrack in the movie was like its own character. This could have really been something in a sequel with modern tech. The closest we got was Rage 2, in the same engine with Avalanche involved. The world in Rage 2 has the look and feel of Mad Max. That game could have also done with a more cohesive and longer story as well.
@antestanic2964
@antestanic2964 Год назад
I agree on everything except the fuel needs to be more rare. It would make the game boring. Imagine going to a convoy and your car just dies. I think the fuel management was fine, but more side missions, with an awesome story like in witcher 3, would do it good.

@joetroutt7425

Fuel rarity is kind of a double edged sword. In the second installment of the Mad Max movie fuel shortage was the sole reason why the apocalypse happened but in Fury Road it's water. I'm just glad the fuel doesn't run out fast to have to fuel up so frequently. But yeah there are fuel cans everywhere. With "Gas town" looming in the horizon you would think that they control the flow of gas and limit it and the only way you could get gas was to siphon it from enemy vehicles once beaten.

The moment this became a platinum game in my mind was maybe 4 hours into the game I did this crazy car maneuver where I hooked an enemy vehicle, whipped him sideways off a makeshift ramp (myself included), throwing him into the convoy he was protecting, myself doing a barrel roll and landing on my wheel heading right into the fray. It legitimately felt like an action sequence right out of one of the movies. Nothing was janky, sound design is top notch. It was amazing. I went on to do more and test crazy combinations but that was by and large my favorite moment. (the rest of the convoy heist/destruction was thrilling as well) Edit: I'll also say anyone interested, I implore you to try this game on its hardest difficulty. It really drives home the desperation and overall theme.

I think the character development makes more sense if you headcanon the game as a prequel to Fury Road, which makes absolute sense with the flashbacks in the film and the way max starts off, a feral man who very much looks to be roaming the "plains of silence." The storm for example: you can go and weather it out in an outpost, or you can risk staying out and harpoon the crates for a huge scrap reward. Same is the minefields: almost all reviewer brings these up as the prime example of copy-paste activities on the map, but what it is is the same risk/reward opportunity. You can lead your pursuers into a minefield and you can be lucky/survive, and when they are being blown up, now that is the definition of REWARD for taking risk... amazing game.

Really love this game. Let's get my only gripe out of the way: The devs apparently didn't have time to fine tune the balancing, so if you're a completionist or just like to see all the side quests, you get a lot of resources that hurt the survival aspect a bit (e. g. water/fuel are no longer scarce). The game could really have profited from an active modding scene to alleviate that. Apart from that, it just nails the atmosphere of the setting. It is also the only source of lore (canon or not) you will find about the world and how it got to that state. Many people think there was a nuclear apocalypse in the setting but it was actually environmental collapse with some very, very strange side effects, like the storms in Fury Road/this a game. This version of climate collapse also made the oceans actually recede, so half of the game map is former ocean floor instead of normal desert, which lends itself to some interesting variations on the usual sandy levels found in games.

@Wonzling0815

@@draco_1876 It wasn't bad at all but balancing wise I would have made it a bit stricter. In my playthrough fuel did not play any role after the the first third of the game. Which is a bit of a shame because "fighting and killing for fuel" is such an important motif in the setting.

Man, this is one of those games that simply becomes a cult classic. Is literally one of the best depictions of a Movie character into a videogame. This title stays up with titles like Rocksteady's Arkham series. The fact that they had the script from Miller himself and had consultation on development is amazing. Is part of those games developed with passion because the Devs loved the title. You are right in many points you made. As a closing statement I am proud it manage to harvest a Mad Max type of atmosphere all together, is not perfect but is great! PS: Here you go, you have a new subscriber. Keep up the good work.

Picked it up a few months after release, had a blast playing it, loved the car combat, the destruction, the sound design. Loved the barren wasteland with the occasional structures harking back to times past, the cool storms, the tribes. Yes it had go here do that open world jank in there but it wasn't bad, it made sense in a way, helping you upgrade Max & his car. Chumbucket was a goofy, endearing character to traverse the world with. I played it through over the course of a week or so with one requirement left for the final trophy, i knew attaining the requirement would mean doing another playthrough so i said i would give it a few months & head back in to get the plat, unfortunately i left it too long before heading back as the servers had been shut down blocking my chance of getting the plat which i was always bummed about as i really enjoyed my time with the game.

I don't like the hand to hand combat so much, to similar the Batman Arkham games system which I didn't like. Also fighting so many people at once hand-to-hand I dont buy in the slightest, even if it's just a game. Setting a future game near the Bullet Farm could help explain why ammo is more bountiful in that region, similar to how fuel is abundant around Gastown in the game.

Dope game over all though, sandstorms are insane in it.

I still come back to Mad Max from time to time whenever I want a fun “shut your brain off” kind of game to play. I think the simplicity of the game’s narrative works because it IS Mad Max, that’s really all that world is. Hell, the entire plot of Fury Road was pretty much “they drive somewhere, then turn around and drive back.” But with Mad Max it’s not the destination that’s important, it’s the journey of getting there. That high octane fueled destruction and chaos that has pretty much become trademark of that universe at this point. The story isn’t complex because it doesn’t NEED to be complex. It’s just Max building a new car and tearing shit up.
