My mother was a heroin addict. And then she became addicted to the prescribed drug, methadone. She died of liver failure resulting from hepatitis C. Watching my mother growing up nodding out and falling asleep everywhere, I knew it was not the life for me. I knew both my father and mother dealt with addiction. I tried drugs and alcohol but hated the effects it had on me and decided I wanted to live a normal life. I tried the life. See that's the line between addicted and not. When you see something is ruining your life and you can walk away from it, you're not addicted. I had settled for a while because I thought I was unworthy but ultimately, I knew there was more. I enjoy watching the sun rise without something else dictating the way I saw the beauty of nature or how I conducted my day to day. I wanted to see beauty in everything. From my heart. I see it in other people, too. Back then I was a decision away from living a different life. And today I live that life. Life is a choice. Everyday is a choice. Your surroundings are a choice. The type of people you surround yourself with is a choice. Help is here. Make the choice. Caring people do exist. Life is possible. You CAN DO it!

I bet she misses her kids bad. She said it how it is and I respect her for that. I hope she does well and gets her kids.

Good job on the interview aspect, kept things rolling well. Have to admire her honesty, those moments of shame based hesitation were quite the window. Hope she talks to a decent social worker, absolutely intelligent and eloquent enough for a proper workplace.. could thrive at a nonprofit that is sympathetic to addiction issues.

I bet she has a story or two, no one just leaves their children and get addicted to drugs, without a trigger. The fact that Her parents don’t speak to her I’m sure doesn’t help her situation. I don’t know her upbringing, but I do feel extremely sad to see this young woman go through such hard times! I don’t know what it’s like to be on drugs nor do I ever want to know, so I’m not going to judge her, i just never know why people do drugs at all when they know they’re addictive?!?, I just pray she gets help before it’s too late!

This breaks my heart because shes so sure about saying she definitely will get her kids back and get off the streets but she's in a more recent video with a boyfriend who appears to be mooching off of her for drugs and she doesn't look very good. Still such a beautiful girl and i wish so much for her to get help and get off the drugs to be abke to have the future she deserves with her kids. I just watched 2 other videos of two women who were murdered on the same exact streets doing the same exact thing on the same exact drugs. Its absolutely terrifying knowing how these girls are so close to their own mortality. I was a heroin addict and came very close to dying by just doing it constantly as much as i possibly could and drove my body into the ground. I wouldn't wish that life on anyone and hope that Maddy can get out of this situation soon. First thing would be to ditch that boyfriend of hers.

As an ugly old guy who shot heroin for 4 years... I always was thankful I wasn’t a female with attractive features bc I KNOW what I would have done to get my dope that day. Times were rough but they weren’t like this. I really feel for these people you interview. There are alot of good souls we lose to addiction everyday.

As long as she has that heroin habit she won't get off the streets. The crack addiction is easy to let go. It is a shame I hope the best for her I really do. #1 goal is rehab for the smack.

Detroit is my home I was born there and to see stuff like this is heart breaking to me I grew up during the 90s when crack was a big thing now its this heroin fentanyl epidemic (much thanks to doctors around the world for that problem) you are a blessing to keep this issue in our faces

Any one of us can become homeless in this day and age. Some of the videos I have seen have shown that some start drugs after they become homeless to survive mentally. You have come across some very smart people. I have slept in my car for a few days years ago. It is so hard to get out of that rabbit hole. I give to homeless people when I come across them in my area. My husband does the same. I never question them about their situation. We all need to keep in mind that 95% of these people would rather live a normal life if given a chance. It breaks my heart that some do not make it out alive. Thank you for giving these people a voice.

I pray she finds her path to salvation. I was very fortunate that the end of my addiction came as a result of a heart attack which stopped me cold! I was discharged from the hospital after 3 days and was was faced with a decision. It came down to live or die. I'd like to say i made the best choice, to walk away from my addiction, but that would be a lie. After thinking about it carefully I called my dealer. She didn't answer. She never took my call again. That was all the impetus I needed. That was 2011, I've been clean since then. I kinda wish that heart attack had come 20 years earlier. It would have saved me a fortune not to mention my reputation and dignity. Battle the drug, girl! The rest will come!

im from southeast ohio right across the river from parkersburg west virginia and i gotta say, this epidemic is beyond sad, its scary.. people die here alot, lots of my friends from school. i fight this addiction everyday, but from the other side. i can honestly say, that i feel like this will never get better.... many prayers for so many ppl

I do love your videos and how you engage these poor souls but it can be so heart breaking to watch them. Sometimes I cant even finish. I will never look at a homeless person the same again.

It's identical to the story from people on the street in the UK unfortunately. Thankfully, i got myself sorted. 11 years clean.

You can tell she is a very intelligent woman. I fear the longer she is out there the farther away in her mind she will put trying to get clean to be with her kids.

I swear.. I wish I had NEVER had a migraine.. That's what started my downward slope to opioids. 100% made me lose EVERYTHING. Praise the Lord though..I've never been a heroin addict. I tried it. Just wasnt my jam. Wish those pills weren't either. Been on suboxone since 2013 NOW. It sucks too. Insurance doesn't pay for it anymore. So have to cash

She will have her kids. 😢 Rhats so sad. I have been there. Been clean since 2018 i lost both of my daughters one i have not seen in almost 7 years and the other since 10/05/2018. Thats also my clean date my baby was taken away when she was 9 months old. Losing your children will completely destroy you. 💔 Addiction is heartbreaking I truly hope that she can get away from this awful man that don't love her and get herself back maybe one day her boys.

OP, I am curious about what made you decide to reach out and actually talk to and record the stories of these ladies? I mean, I am interested in random people I see out and about but I never have the courage to actually approach them and ask questions. I really appreciate what your videos can bring to a community. We are so often blind to the hurt that our neighbors feel and the hardships they face. Just a simple, no-threat conversation can be so enlightening. To hear the raw, unedited story of how a person got to the stage they are at in life is humbling. Even if the tiny details are not included. Point is, this can happen to ANYONE. It is nice to see someone looking in from the outside treat them with dignity and respect. Not all bums and addicts are awful human beings looking for a free ride. As sad as this is, I am glad you do what you do. Thanks.

My heart hurts for Madeline. I’m an only child without parental support and could have definitely went down this same road as her. I had 3 daughters of my own and until they were teens, their dad had them. I wish I could reach out to her and offer kind words, words of encouragement, and to build a friendship with her so she knows someone cares and wants to cheer her on. This woman needs some unconditional love and loving, proper support. Is there a way I can reach out to her? Our stories sound similar but we both went opposite forks in the road! Please let me know!

Tom you do an excellent job With the way that you get these people to truly speak to you. You have a gift for asking people to divulge their biggest secrets and fears. You have a true charisma and kindness. It's a gift. Maddie is very open in this one. She's very honest how her addiction started she's like a canary in a coal mine. She's got a message for everyone and people need to listen. It's frightening how addictive opiates are. I've never done heroin, but I have done major amounts of prescription drugs. And yes, if I didn't have the resources that I had (Read good medical insurance for doctors and prescriptions). I would have done it- of that I'm sure (I I'm sober now and I lost all my resources in the process of ruining my life that I had worked so hard to build). I always knew that heroin was invented to cure people from their addiction to morphine. Little did they know that heroin is much more addictive than morphine because it's a more intense high.I convinced myself for years that I needed opiates. I even had 10 years of sobriety, and then I got a car accident. And I allowed myself to take those pain medications, even after the acute stage. I should have known better. Anybody who is given anything like Vicodin or oxycodone, Tylenol 4s, etc Please understand - you are playing with fire! You have no idea how your body is going to respond to that. You can become an addict in about 2 seconds flat. I'm not going to say it doesn't feel good, that's the hook. It feels amazing. The reason that these people are able to do what they do is that they are on cloud nine when they get high. So they just stay high through the bad parts. And their thinking is so muddled. We weren't meant to feel that type of euphoria. It's a spike in your dopamine receptors etc. A major one. It's like trying to open a bag of potato chips with a sledgehammer.Please bear with me because I know that this is rant. I just really need people to know this. I'm pouring my heart out for a reason. Yeah it will take your pain away, emotional pain, anything that's bothering you. You'll be fine with a remarkable amount of things. You'll become a person that is a shell of your former self. And only when you have lost more than you ever gained Will you finally make the decision whether to live or die. Because you will die. Eventually it kills every single person. I think that Tom does an excellent job of being a voice of the cautionary tale. Listen to Maddie, listen to the voices of every single person that he speaks to regarding drugs and alcohol. Every single one of the people he talks to at least have an addiction to one substance if not multiple substances. Things to wake them up, things to calm them down, things to make them trip, you name it. Because anything that doesn't feel the anguish inside that you don't know how to process is better. I can tell you from my own experience that withdrawals are the hardest thing I've ever gone through. Literally. I've had to withdraw about five times in my life. I wouldn't wish it on anybody. It's like covid-19 times 10. And I say that having flatlined in the ambulance and the ICU and eight days of a respirator when I had covid-19. They didn't think I was going to live. I would literally take that over having withdrawals. If you've read this far, I thank you. And if I've ended this awkwardly, it's only because there's so much I would like to say but only a finite amount of time and everyone's day that needs to be taken up with me. I thank you Tom, and I think everybody on here who speaks to us, and those of us who listen. We are listening. I feel proud to stand among your ranks.

I have to say that I have seen more recent videos of her of her and her boyfriend and she looks so much better now. Jarryl has been good for her and normally in these situations a partner who enables is a huge downfall. This is the first time I have seen her first visit wnd its crazy how much of an up and down change she went throughbut her last video with jarryl she looks great

I wish i could find a girl like Mattie. I could work through the past or addictions, nobody's perfect. Her honesty is so fantastic, everything else could be overcame.

I hope that one of these days she looks back and says damn I walked that walk and I made it

Maddie I hope you’re safe. I hope you can get some resources together to get some insurance for rehab and go forward. Get your kids. Get you’re life back. I see the pain in your eyes. Maybe try everyday to inquire on help or finding help. It’s out there , but no one will do it for you. You’ve got to seek it yourself. You can do this. Whatever caused this pain inside you can be helped too. Drugs will never get rid of the pain only cover it up. Get clean and get some outpatient therapy/counseling and work through the demons. I’m not harping on you just speak from similar situations. Best wishes

Crack is way more expensive where I live. To have a decent habit starts at 150-300/day. A chronic user can easily spend $350/day and I’ve spent $750 many times. But those estimates are low cause I was buying my man’s too, so double that, at least. I’m 11 months clean now tho. If I had all the money I’ve spent it would be hundreds of thousands. But I shouldn’t kick myself as much as I do about that because there would’ve been no way for me to stay up three and four days making money if I wasn’t on drugs at the time. I still make money, but there’s no recouping the loss. A clean person can’t grind like that. In terms of being on the clock. As far as doing anything WELL or anything that makes sense, I’m a lot more productive now.
