Thanks for such an even handed review. I also preferred the second half of the film. Cooper's performance as an older Maestro on and off stage seemed to have more depth. I'm never surprised by the gifted Carey Mulligan and she looked sensational in costume. The cinematography was really very good. As another "nit picker" and novice to Bradley Cooper's direction: 3 outta 5 sounds good to me too.🎬

Very solid review. You make solid observations about every aesthetic dimension of the film. I rate it much higher; I gotta say Maestro contains two of the greatest movie scenes in many years - Lenny's & Felicia's argument in the Dakota - and the completely breathtaking conducting performance of the Mahler 2nd - which I consider a singular cinematic achievement. I don't agree with all your takes, but you defend those you have very thoroughly and competently. Thanks.

Hey Elliott! Sad to hear you didn’t love it, but I am still very excited to watch this tomorrow! I think there’s a very good chance Bradley Cooper will finally win that Oscar.

I’m 17 minutes into the film and I absolutely resonate with feeling frustrated as a viewer and that is a direct result of the odd choice in the pacing of the film so far…scenes come across as rushed and the premise and imho, dialogue is pretentious and “art house” enough that it already runs the risk of being camp, shtick or gimmicky 4:12 I believe Bradley met his match in that Carey Mulligan is unphased by American Hollywood charm that maybe influenced the chemistry in his previous films - and he doesn’t come off that strong as a lead actor. 6:12 performative is a good word to use but not ideal in describing any actor’s performance let alone an A list starlet. Tried too hard and watching it is like nails on a chalkboard for me. This is one that would be made slightly better by seeing it in theatre where the audience can possibly feel more immersed via the lights and ambiance that a major theatre setting can provide (for e.g 9:39 picking up on nuance). Stellar, in-depth review. Happy holidays 🎉

I didn’t like this as much as a Star is Born Cinematography is good Screenplay and editing is meh Nice scenes but med movie Too be really honest I see a number of people struggling to get through first half of this movie to see the better parts in the second half Solid review E!

someone needs to tell me why this would even be nominated, maybe Carey for carrying it, but its just not good. It was like watching Bradley Cooper wiggling the doll's arm in American Sniper for two hours. The premise of the 50s dysfunctional relationship as a romance because he has to get cornholed or he is going to die, that isn't how any of this works.

The movie was boring if you read about her life they left out so much it’s insane that they had things with the black panthers her socilite life she was in reality a tour de four. They don’t show his genius just how much different stuff he did. Too much on his gay life who cares about that. Wait behind closed doors doors he was full blown gay everywhere come on
