What're your thoughts on Bradley Cooper's MAESTRO?

My review: Zzzzzz. After watching this film, if you didn't already know that Bernstein was a famous conductor, you'd be left wondering why he was famous.

Exactly, hated this movie. They chose to focus on a part of his life that no one cares about.

It was a tedious movie. I couldn’t get through it.

There was much to admire in this film, yet somehow it held me at arm's length, it didn't have the emotional kick I was expecting. A big problem for me is when actors strive so hard to get a close impersonation of a real life person, as it can stray into a mannered performance, as I feel it tends to do here. I'd much rather the actor works on the emotional truth of the character even if they don't capture the exact timbre or patterns of the person's voice.

Agreed. I thought Michael Fassbender's performance in Steve Jobs was a great example of doing it correctly, as you describe.

The legacy of Leonard Bernstein is not that he was unashamedly bisexual and, yet, I felt like this film implied it was his major contribution as an artist. Astonishingly, iconic creations like "West Side Story" and his collaboration with other legends like Jerome Robbins and Stephen Sondheim were given what seemed like a few token frames. I don't even want to think of just about excluding "Omnibus" from the film. I have no idea what Bradley Cooper was trying to achieve. Apparently, it worked for some viewers.

Yeah. The only reference to West Side Story was, if I remember correctly, a 10-second long, newsreel-style anchor saying “working on his new projects [can’t remember the name] and ‘West Side Story.’” and a totally out-of-place, unrelated to what’s on screen bit of score. As for focusing on the bisexuality, the film neglected to include Bernstein’s direct connection to the AIDS epidemic-I mean, Tommy Cothrane was like one of the first AIDS cases. Instead, Bernstein’s “bisexuality” was presented in the most cartoonish, over-the-top, stereotypical way. Felicia’s line, “If you’re not careful, you’re going to die a lonely old queen” pretty much sums up the portrayal. (That line was also my favorite in the film-for its totally hilarious campiness. I LMAO’d. I was also reminded that I could’ve been spending my time having much more fun watching a John Waters film instead of this miserable POS. I don’t think those are the kind of audience reactions Cooper intended.) The ridiculous focus on and portrayal of Bernstein’s “bisexuality” also relegated Felicia to the tired, stereotypical, long-suffering wife role. It’s as if she existed solely to put up with Lenny’s sh!t. It TOTALLY ignores her social justice work; instead choosing to show us her working on some sad TV shoot that, I’m sure, absolutely NO ONE at the time, much less in 2023 remembers. The film was awful for so many reasons. The only saving graces were the lighting design, maybe cinematography, and Mulligan-even though the role she was made to play was incredibly one-dimensional.

i was impressed by the actors but not by the script. very boring, not enough music and I would have liked to learn about Lennie's studies, career, his mentors, life abroad, Westside Story, interaction with musicians and singers ... I realize this is not a documentary but the story is thin.

Your Three ***'s is VERY generous as I feel this film failed Bernstein and all of us who adored his music and his titanic influence on our American musical and cultural scene. It also NEVER mentioned Bernstein's greatest triumphs as an exceptional teacher. All in all, a very flawed movie but very far from masterful. Suppose the weakest aspect was the foolish writing to only tell the story of his intimate, sexual life, and even there it totally swept aside the intimacy and love he had for his male loves. Ugh.....a very failed movie...in too many important crucial ways. Go see Wonka and have a joyful viewing of a lovely movie instead! Timothee Chalamet, as ever, is wonderful!

Dull and uninvolving. Those of us who actually saw Bernstein in concert can only smirk at the laughable "conducting". Cooper tried, but it still comes across as ludicrous. If you want to know who Bernstein was, read Burton's biography and watch the DVDs of the many taped concerts - especially the Mahler cycle.

Yes, greatxanalysis. The film really does a disservice to Bernstein"s contribution to our culture and his extraordinary musicality by focusing on his private life soley in this film. Too much. And not relevant enough. It us not the reason we CARE about him. I don't care if he came from Jupiter or Mars. What he did while here should be seen and celebrated. ."Shallow" should have been written to describe this film.

It was a “love story” about a gay man and his beard. It may have been less boring if the film had focused on the anguish that fueled his art: a lie enforced on him by a small minded and tawdry society

I would not recommend this film. It caused me to cancel Netflix! Why? Because, simply, it was boring. Leonard Bernstein in person conducting - there are many films of this. You don't have to see this film it is too dull. Best to watch the real thing.

Great review, I agree with your points. For me the film spent more time focusing on his sexuality and his complicated marriage as apposed to his music which as an audience member watching a biopic of Bernstein, you want to see. Cooper and Mulligan were exceptional, as was the cinematography and sound design, the Mahler scene in particular was brilliant, the highlight of the film. Something I wanted to see more of as you’re telling the life story of one of the most decorated composers and conductors in history. Overall a good film that fell short because of the lack of attention on the music and more on things that didn’t need to be explored. We want to hear about the music, not about his personal life. 3 out of 5. Quick question, how did you get hold of the footage you used in your review?

lol when you mentioned how he starred in films like the hangover, i realized why it’s been hard to take him seriously. He’s not an awful actor like The Rock but his recent roles come off as a child trying to fit into his dad’s clothes; it just doesn’t feel sincere. I’m so used to seeing him playing a total douche that something like a role in maestro feels out of place

Tbh, the plot is just him being gay and not about his talent

The problem is that you approach this as a biopic...it is not. Criticism of a movie should be approached from the angle of what it set out to be and whether it has achieved that, not what YOU wanted it to be. In my opinion it did what it set out to achieve, which is to portray the marriage of a man and woman who happened to be great artists and how their circumstances affected their relationship. I'm just gonna say it. I don't know that this film even needed to be made. Aside from that the acting was bad and nothing happens.

4:22 i am grateful when it comes to see Felicia's perspective because Bernstein was so off to me. But I love the movie. I believe Netflix was afraid of developing Bernstein and choosing a wrong path/ having too much haters

It's a great movie but I get it some people disagree about this movie because it's so supposed to be a biopic but it focuses only on his relationships but not the full creative art of Bernstein but there is a scene where truly stands out and for me I think it will be great if the movie title is different.
