It should have been an extra card, yes! I forgot that level-up until the end. One card can be the difference between a win and a loss! Good spot; thanks for following along, R.R.
@@BoxofDelights Also, your shapeshifting could've used the influence 2 as attack 2 to make up the difference without taking the wound :) Congrats on another great win though! :)
I’m late to the party, but this game was amazing. I’ve seen all your MK games and I enjoyed them all, but loved this one the most - very satisfying to see you pull through even after the rough start. Damn I wish you’d upload at least one game a year 😂
This campaign had the same feeling as watching a epic movie! Seeing someone like Ricky, who has a lot of experience in this game, solving all the problems is a great way for me to learn and push myself on my mage campaigns.
Wow. What a photo finish. That's when Mage Knight is at its best. Two thoughts: * I gasped when you flipped the white city tile. Seriously, Ricky, the same thing happened in your Hidden Valley play through from December 2018! I remember because that happened to me when I tried that scenario, but unlike you, I wasn't so lucky to have a water-walking skill to bail me out. I'd have to test it, but I think approaching the cities from the west is usually safer. * At 10:32, rather than facing the lava dragon, you justified ending your turn on the mine by saying, "I need some more Source." Hm. If I didn't know any better I'd think you're playing Mage Knight ... but you're thinking about Cloudspire. If Cloudspire comes out subconsciously while playing Mage Knight, it has to be good.
Great play through. I bought this game 4 years ago after watching one of your old play throughs. This is my favorite solo game of all time. Thanks for introducing me to it.
Epic game with a struggle the whole way. I love the way the terrain worked out in the end, with the walls, thelake, the dragons in the way .. really a nailbiter!
Excellent. What an adventure indeed! This has also helped me get a solid understanding of the rules since I’ve only had the game a couple of weeks. Can’t wait to try again now!
That was the jackanory of a board game your vids have not only got me through the last few evenings of lockdown but built my confidence with playing the game itself thanks you !!!
What an epic journey. I could feel the tension building up in the last 3 turns. This was close! Even though you made some minor mistakes (it's bound to hapen in MK), you would have won anyway. This is the best example of how balanced this masterpiece really is. Thank you for the journey. Looking forward to the next episode (maybe with Krang *hint, hint*)
Congratulation for such an intense game! Mage Knight will always hold a special place in my heart, and I want to thank you for the videos which made it possible.
Even after years of playing I still find some mistakes I tend to make. Thank you for all these playthroughs Ricky. BTW I would watch a channel just based on your MK adventures.
Ricky, after the first attack vs. the white city you leveled up twice, which meant hand size of 7 which would let you draw steady tempo. More leeway for the last attack without taking wounds..
Yes, good shout! I forgot that last level-up until the end. One more card can make a BIG difference! Thanks for watching and following along Georg! R.R.
You legend! 🏆 Just finished my third solo conquest. Still struggling to defeat the last level 8 city. Also noticed some rules mistakes I’ve been making from watching this. Turned to your play through for some inspo!
Wow, what an ending! Masterfully played, well done! Thanks a lot for this new series Ricky, it was super entertaining. Would it be too much to ask for another War of the Ring playthrough featuring both the expansions? That would just make my day. I think I have watched the original one once a year since it came out. :D
Thanks for your time and effort Ricky, a very enjoyable playthrough. I have just recently bought this game and it is reassuring to see an experienced player like yourself struggling to squeeze out those final points needed to win. These videos have been a great help too in understanding the game's complexities. Stay safe mate.
In your last turn, before drawing cards, your voice sounded with a mixture of excitement and fear, and I could only think: "he's got The monks, he Will have some cards... They are just some shitty guards!!!! But, Damn!!!! You almost screw The thing up!!!! XDDDDDD What a nice runthrough... Congratulations. PD: Amotep Freezers MVP... But that big SHIELD... xD
Great work, Ricky! I really enjoy your Mage Knight playthroughs. Thank you for introducing me to this great game a couple of years ago! I think that you said that you scored 149, but I believe that you actually scored 169 instead. The board goes to 119, so when you "wrap around", you add 120 to the score, instead of 100.
Hi Elysmir J, yes I did that, so finished with 149. Actually, it was 151 (see next part), as I had an extra card I could have used to save that final wound. Breaking 150 is a reasonable result I think... 200 would have been better!
@@BoxofDelights I must have missed that part, then. I agree that 200+ is always my goal, but there are some times that it just doesn't work out and you have to just try to clear the cities.
Hi! You used Regeneration to ready a unit during the fight on the last dragon. You can use that card during a fight! Edit: ok I see you put the card out during the fight, but only really used it after.
Hi Ricky, you can actually avoid the last wound by using 3 cards side way as 3 Block, and then Shape Shift 6 Block to 6 Attack from your artifact + 3 Attack from your unit.
I always struggle to assault the second city on the last night if I'm not able to get the sparing power tactic (to have a big hand when assaulting the city on the last turn). If that's not the case, I usually use my units on the initial assault on the second city, but when it's time to make the final assault, I'm with few cards in my hands and no units to support me. What would be the strategy for when sparing power is not available? thanks!
was going to ask why you didn't play the shield and use the shapeshift, but just saw the Epilogue lol, haven't played Mage Knight for ages, so rusty on all the rules
Very nice series! You played very well. Although you were quite lucky to hit this unfortified enemy in the last city, you were able to use all your ranged attacks for him. I actually wonder why you favor these bolts so much, is it because of the flexibility it provides with the possibility to gain a mana crystal or is it for the ranged attack? Having ranged attack seems mostly useful for rampaging orcs and dragons...
I like to take siege and range whenever I can; being able to pick off enemies, especially in cities, with siege attacks means I don't have to worry about blocking or taking wounds. It's something I always like to do. If i see "siege", I know I want it and plan around it!
Ricky, you could also use your shapeshift ability to convert the massive block bonus from your shield artifact to attack the last Utem Guardsmen, could you not?
I have a question, i just bought Mage Knight yesterday, but the next thing isn't clear for me. I know that when i use the effect of a recruited unit, for instance Movement +2, then i put my shield on it to remember i can't use it's effect during the rest of the round anymore, but i still can use it to defend myself if it isn't wounded. But if i use it to defend an attack that won't let it wounded (without using it's effect yet): -I have to put the shield on it, but can i still use it's effect once this round? -I use it to defend the attack, but i don't put the shield on it and i still use it to defend without letting be wounded so on and so on and then finally use it's effect and then put the shield on it.
using a unit to soak up damage does not put a shield (actually a ‘Command Token’) on it. However, using a unit to soak up any amount of damage (even just 1) will wound the unit. Only unwounded and ready (ie no command token) units can use their abilities. There is one exception: units with resistances to an attack can soak up damage equal to their Armor before taking a wound. Does this answer your query? best wishes, Ricky
Hi Ricky, great video. I'm yet to conquer both cities. Question, when you attacked the 2nd city, you first used siege attack to take down an enemy but then you used Range attack to take down the second. I thought it had to be all siege attacks on a fortified site.
Could you have turned the block value from your artifact into attack at the end? Doesn't your level tactic allow that or no? If so that is a deadly combo
On your last assault, could you have squeezed another attack from the influence from Promise and your shape shifter skill? Then you could have blocked.
I am wondering when i see you play... Do you have a card playing background in general, i mean poker and stuff like that ? The way you handle, shuffle, throw the unsleeved cards is "ungeeky", it has a poker feel to it, you hide your hand by reflex as well.
Wow, that tile full of lakes was nasty. I thought you would be out of movement... I really thought this was going to be your first defeat. nice played, as usual! PS: is there going to be a playthrough for the (not so) new expansion for Robinson crusoe?
Great video but can you explain me 3 things ? 1/ 20 min 2 green mana? I guess no its a green + blue or green + white. 2/ On the last fight the freezer were used to kill the dragon, how do you refresh them ? 3/On the last fight the Altem mages normally dont get a wound ? Because the enemies need a cold fire attack to do an effective attack : 9 /2 = 4 so normally they soak up everything ? Ps: i just check the rules, really strange rules in this game. So if i get it if a enemy attack with COLDFIRE attack, you need a cold fire block. And if they attack with fire a COLDFIRE block is enough to fully block BUT if your Units have a Cold and fire resistance they dont Halves the normal fire and cold attack but just COLDFIRE attack ? Oo..
@@felipedacostanunes8716 No, only Basic Cards (the ones you start with, with your character icon in the top-right) can be shapeshifted, not Advanced Cards, Spells or Artifacts.
this only works with units that have resistance: the unit has ice resistance to a 9 Ice attack, and the unit has armour 5, so you reduce the 9 attack by the 5 armour using resistance; this reduces the attack from 9 to 4. Now the unit acts as normal: ie it takes a wound and reduced the attack by its 5 armour: ie takes a wound and the 4 attack is reduced by 5 down to zero, so no more damage is dealt. hope this helps! RR
Ricky Royal, crystal clear. Much appreciated. All of your videos made this game easy to grasp and approachable for me, and since 2013 till today I am still learning it from you.
No, retreating from fortified site does not wound; you only take a wound if you retreat into a non-safe spot - which means you have to do a forced-withdrawal (take a wound and retreat again).
PS. Totally adore your mage knight playthroughs. It's what got me into the mage knight passion 10+ years ago and I feel I couldn't and wouldn't have started without your videos. Thank you so much for your hard work putting them together!
While this was a fun play through, it solidifies my belief that it's almost impossible to beat this game with the rules as written. During the siege phase all enemies share their block and resistances. You have to take them all out at once. Since the one enemy had ice resistance they all have ice resistance. I feel the game becomes a lot more playable if you just start with the 3 crystals on your character card. It mitigates so much of the bad luck of bad starts. Fun play through, but reminds me of why this game is so frustrating.
they don’t share resistance unless you decide to group them together. you will only want to group them together if you are using one card or combination of cards to take them out with one attack. if you don’t combine them you can attack each one separately- so any excess attack will not carry over from one attack to the next. likewise, in the range/siege phase you can choose to pick off just one or two enemies as you wish . Hope this helps!
You possibly spot this later but when you took the fame from the first city assault you were on 52 fame, got 22 and went to 84....should have been 74 so you'd only have levelled up once.
Hi Paul, yes, I was on 62, so that took me to 84. The font on the board and the clarity on the video may not be great, but the 52 is much further down on the left. You can see it more clearly at 13:48 in the film. Thanks for following to the end ! hope you enjoyed the series, Ricky.
